i was listening to 'mella mella ennai thottu' from vaazhkai and that inspired me to start this topic. more often than not the tempo of a song is determined by the start the song is given. in the above song raja brilliantly combines a violin with percussion to set the rhythm .
iam looking for songs that have a brilliant starting piece which sets the flow for the song.
examples can include raakamma, shubalekha(telugu), etc. the songs need not be fast paced. for example 'poove sempoove' has a melodious but a good start, IMO. looking forward to u'r contributions.

santhana kaatre from thanikaatu raaja has a really brilliant start.
maarugo maarugo also has a nice but different type of start, with relegious hummings from a temple and church well interspersed.
idhu oru nilaak kaalam also has a fast, pacy start beat which i like.

There is a good start to the song
"Ore Naal unai naan" from Ilamai Oonjaladugiradhu
The trumpets of "Germaniyin SenthenmalarE" and the violins later provide a brisk start to the song.
The mellowed start of this song with a flute and then rapid flow of music and culminating with the sound of the breeze "Valai Osai kalakalvena"
More later

azhagu aayiram from ullaasap paravaigal IMO has a brilliant start. IR has brought out very well the mood of the song set in a foreign locale. the piano piece beautifully merges with a percussion intrument which slowly picks up and then the humming follows.

1. Nee oru kadhal sangeetham (Nayakan) - a beautiful blend of violin, veena & tabla.
2. En iniya pon nilavae (Moodu pani) - guitar strumming
3. Poongathave (Nizhalgal)
4. Ennai thaalatta (KM) - a heart beat like sound was quite appropriate in this song
5. Andhi mazhai (Raaja Paarvai)
There are just tooooo many of these songs from IR!!

"oh oh maanE maanE maanE unnaith thaanE" from veLLai rOjaa.. violins, taken over by a bass flute and unbelievable harsh/firm, but slow beats with guitar.. violin counter pointing with KB.. marvellously blends and brings down the pace..And the duet starts slowly...
Isnt a brilliant start? And the songs gets back to the same tempo during the interludes thanks to the sharp violin strokes!

one of the greatest starts any song could have is the santoor-flute-violin beginning to 'vaan megangaLe' (new vaarppugal, btw what does vaarppugal mean?). the song epitomises IR's unbridled creative genius as it takes the listener along a mind-blowing journey. MV and SJ's singing is adequate foil to the maestro's magic. it kills me, maan, any time i hear it. of course, the line "sangin Oasai ketkum neram enro" left me puzzled. sangu (conch, i presume) is blown either before a war or at a person's passing. why would rati want to hear that sound? maybe she secretly wished KB would conk out!!
another all-time killer number is "aagaya gangai" from dharma yudhham, which is also features the great thengai's even greater comic villainy (he is serious, but has me in splits). the start is the best ever superstar got, with SJ's voice creating that magical effect. Kamal has gone on record that his greatest musical regret in life is that IR did not compose that song for him.
as a digression, can we (interested parties) discuss the comic genmius of coconut sreenivasan and his immeasurable contribution to Tamil films. was watching cos a thaan kadavulada last night; even now i am rolling the floor thinking of "bulb minuk minuk prashathama" (those who have seen the movie would know what i am talking about).

Cram: Actually u should've finished the whole dialodue. For thos interested its "AmmaniyO yen bulb minik mninik prashithamma sadhurama". I hope u would still remember a lot of those other jokes. "Shishyargal kOdi aanal ippo naan singilaaga vandhuleEn", "Kesavodhaara manavlinga prashetha.." etc. This is one movie I would like to watch again and again. Thats probably a full length comedy and wonder how it fared in the box office

Another can I say brilliant start or rather popular start is that of
"Sangeedha mEgam then sindhum neram". I had mentioned how popular that this was that most college groups had thsi song as a regular feature in thier list when they perform.
This song has also a mellowed start doesnt explode but sure does evoke a sense of tranquility and the song so aptly written
"ThaalatudhE vaanam..". I like the way the drums, usually noisy is used so effectively.
If only IR songs have to be discussed here then ignore the following, another favourite start of mine "Puththam pudhu bhoomi vendum.." from Thiruda Thiruda. Infact it also has good interludes too. Another good start is that of "Seerkondu vaa..", I like the humming that SJ does just before the song starts.

3. ennulle ennulle - valli - could be appreciated better together with the visuals.
4. aasai adhigam vechu - marupadiyum

6. sundari neeyum - MMKR
7. malai kovil vaasalil - veera
8. maarugo maarugo - unconventional start for a dappanguthu type song.
9. oru naal - devadhai

Vijay,
I don't agree with as this is not a comprehensive one of all postings. This may be list of songs which have brilliant start IN YOUR OPINION ONLY. You should have no prejudice when you make conclusions.

i have clearly said in my previous posting that these are top 10 IN MY OPINION only, within brackets. i think u have missed it. never mind.
i never make biased conclusions and for that matter the list above is not a conclusion.

I was listening to Yaar Andha Nilavu from Shanti, the way the music starts, puts you in the mood for the song.
Nenjathile Nee Netru Vandhaai has a great positive start, another great by PS.

Vijay,
just apply the yardsticks that you mentioned
1)set the mood
2)creative
3)innovative
to the following songs and tell me if non of them qualify to measure your level of expectation
1) 'AgAya gangai' from dharma yuddham.
2) 'sangeetha mEgam' from udaya geetham
3) 'vAnam keezhE vandhal enna' from thoongAthE thambi thoongAthE
4) 'en vAzhvilE varum anbE vaa' from thambikku entha ooru
5) 'rAthiriyil poothirukkum thAmaraithAn peNNo' from thangamagan
6) 'adi peNNE poNNoonjal Adum iLamai' from 'muLLum malarum'
I think ones subjective taste would be immaterial if you look at the melody and orchestration that were built in these songs to meet any level of expectation.
Above all, I would rate "yaar antha nilavu , yEnintha kanavu" to top this list as that being most melodious of all the above songs.

observer,
if i were to make a list of top 20 or 30 perhaps i would include u'r songs. as u have said taste is subjective. i have listed what i thought appealed to me the most. iam not saying that u'r list of songs are not appealing. but they do not make my list of top 10, that's all. i have clearly mentioned the letters IMO in my posting before listing down the songs. and u have also agreed
that these songs can be the top 10 IN MY OPINION only. so waht's the problem?
if u call me biased, then iam biased towards WHOM or WHAT?
