I saw Virumandi by paying extra.
Why KAMAL..? Why u proved all that told by K.Balachander in Virumandi VIZHA.
It is better to have directors like BHARATHAN ( DEVAR MAHAN ) to deliver a good interesting movie.
Virumandi was very raw and not able to sit in the second half.
Dont confuse the audience with ur confused state of mind.
Iam UPSET and my friends ridicule me as a fan of yours.

Some of you had asked me what I meant by "...when reality strikes....". This is what I meant.....

Again....I have not seen the movie yet...but I am glad my judgement was spot on!
If not for the lack of competition (from the top stars like Vikram, Surya and the likes) and the media hype (thanks to Mr. Krishnaswamy and some trditionally pro Kamal magazines like Vikatan and Kumudam) it wouldn't have even had a good opening. Don't get me wrong...I do like Kamal films but Kamal got it wrong from the beginning. He should seriousely consider concentrating on direction and slow down with acting. He should realise that he is no Sivaji for that matter. The times have changed...people are moving on. He had limitations (in the roles he can play) even when he was young. Now, his age and stocky physique are also hindering. He is still one of the best technicians around. Kamal is a better techncian than an actor....I want more from Kamal the technicians. Acting is in very good hands with Vikram and to some extent Surya (he has just begun)! Kamal should wait and pick the roles that suits his skils, abilities, age and personality...and get in to direction with other talented actors. Else...he will be sidelined from the mainstream cinema and more and more frustrations would creep in! We don't want that...do we?

Virumandi - is the one of the best movies in recent years. In that 4 special things have to mentioned.
1. Kamal's acting and direction. - Excellent
2. Art Director Prabhakar and Camera Man - Fantastic
3. Pasupathi as Kothala Devar - Mirattal
4. Ragadevan Ilayaraja - The best of bests.
Still in my mind - Unnai Vida is going on. What a song? People who are comparing IR with others, please stop all your comparisons, as Raja is beyond comparisons. He is genious. Now, like others, Kamal also learned a lesson.

Yaaro,
Kamal's name in Mahanadhi was Krishnaswamy not Poornam's

My personal opinion is that Kamal's virumandi is a yardstick in good cinema for tamil people. I have never said Virumandi is 100% perfect movie. But given its pitfalls it is 100000 million times better than the regular cinemas that release like JJ, Jhot, Jai, Thirumalai and Iyarkai. All these movies raise my expectations with awesome trailers but were pure duds!
Virumandi on the other hand with its novel screenplay(again not the 2 story version but camera hanging from hand shooting surfaces in documentary) and other such realistic elements mae me sit up and salute tamil cinema which seems to have faded to the point of tedious shame since the arrival of vijay, ajith etc....
and personally I revere Kamal better than Sivaji. ALl those wo cannot tolerate this and who call it a joke can blame there lack of tlerance to apreciate other such opinions.
I have myself commited the sin of compariung sivaji and kamal . These two greats have acted in different era s and are incomparable. But the vigour with which kamal tries to polish his products (like hey ram, virumandi) is just amaaaazing. The commitment to raise the tehnical aspects close to intl standrads at the same time maintaining the good acting with "lesser" over-melodrama, length dialogs of advice, kanneeer deluge and publicity stunts has made me revere him more.
I am sick of people who are condescending. Sick of those who get upset becos someone mentions sivaji's name alonside another actor. Sorry if this statement was out of intolerance but this needed to be shot ahead at people who think they ae more aware.

Bala,
These are still early days for Surya. I don't see him being an icon or an idol, but I just feel he would do justice to the role that he gets.
Kannan,
I am under the opinion, as stated earlier, that the Box Office collections do not necessarily suggest the quality of a film.

i saw virumandi last night....
its a one time viewable movie, it has its moments. but as any other kamal movie he tries too hard. The subject was an interesting one and the way he shows two different views was very different and delivers the msg he is trying to give.
But as far as class act film etc...Anbe Sivam was 10 times better i feel.this one coulda been a really good one if handled a little better.but we do see sum very good scenes in the movie. as a whole i was disappointed after readin the reviews etc.
BGM....ummmm yeh...was pretty much d songs...and rest dialogue cept twice IR scores actual BGM and used it over and over... those two pieces were good tho.
On the spot recording...shouldnt have been used in this movie cuz they didnt kno how to use it properly.the sound was horrible.clarity was here and there-sumtimes it was clear sumtimes it wasnt.it was harsh on the ears.
Overall a see once movie thats abt it.

Piratheepan, I think yours was probably one of the most sensible and unbiased opinion. I don't understand why people (or should I say Kamal fans) create such unnecessary hype. We can understand their desperation because Kamal needs a hit at the box office very badly and others such as Vikram and Surya delivering quality films which are mega hits as well. But, they should understand that they are hurting Kamal more than anything else. Like what happened to you...you will be disappointed because of higher expectations. I am worried that this will happen to me as well. In fact, it has already happening at the box office. According to the collections report above (Hindu - Metro Plus)...it is slipping already. I saw...Enagal Anna...I couldn't sit through the film...but I have a feeling that it might have a late pick up simply due to "no expectations".
C~P...I am with you on that....box-office collection do not necessarily suggest the quality of the film in some cases.
V, you can even compare ramarajan with Sivaji...that is your opinion and I have no say in that. And, most fans do think that their hero is the best actor around. Go ask even an MGR fan. Whats important is what the public (the neutrals) think.....I bet 9 out of 10 would say that Sivaji was ..is... and will ever be the first and last word of ACTING. Why most don't tolerate such comments is because it shows ignorance and stupidity more than anything else. Let's have a forum on who of the present actor is best in doing this role or that role...and you can present your case. That will be fun and no one will ridicule you. But, please leave Sivaji alone!
Now Kamal will have his place in the history of tamil cinema....he is one of the best technicians who had graced the tamil cine field and is a very good actor in certain roles. But, someone will always call it a joke when any one compares any one to Sivaji. Other wise...very soon... some one will have a posting claiming that Karthik is a better actor than Kamal or comparing Simbu with Kamal.....now, we don't want that to happen...do we?
There is only SUN in the solar system...which is Sivaji....the rest are all stars true to the word. Now, some are bigger and brighter stars...and Kamal is one of them. Let's leave it at that!

Sivaji might be the greatest actor. But he sure does not appeal to me senibilities. His acting or should I say over-acting was probably in vogue those days but I think his performances are as much hyped as that of Kamal Hassan's as you claim. One of the ridiculous climaxes that I have seen was from the movie "Thanga Pathakam". In that, Sivaji after firing at his son (played by Srikanth), starts singing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Stars"!!! I might ridicule it further by explaining it. You should watch it on your own to have a heartly laugh!
Oh! God, let me don my asbestos suit!

Kannan from Sydney,
I dont think Sivaji has acted brilliantly when it comes to comedy. I have seen alot of Sivaji movies. I would say not to compare actors, but criticizing an actor is fine with genuine reason. Comparing actors is tough because of the social scene, language and perception then and now is different. Expectations for a kamal as a rowdy now and sivaji as a rowdy then will be different.
Sivaji has his limitations as well. I can't stand some Sivaji's movies because of overacting ... even my dad can't. I think you need to stop comparing as well and say sivaji is sun and others are less bright stars.
I am really surprised by your statement "Vikram and Surya delivering quality films". It should be "Vikram and Surya are delivering box office hit films recently". Its a harsh reality or madness (so-called fans of an actor) that Thirumalai kind of movies are a success. I think there is more to a movie than good copied story, fight and comedy scenes. Even an incident can be a very good movie. Also, its pretty bad that a director or a screenplay writer is seldom given credit.
I think Virumandi is one step forward in terms of that. I think Kamal has acted well, because his presence as "Kamal" is not there.
