To me it appears the songs from the 40's and 50's stand tall, ahead of most stuff composed after that. Yesterday evening I had the opportunity to listen to two gems by GR, the TMS -- P. Bhanumathy one, and the solo by P Leela. The songs were simply irresistible, compelling me to touch the rewind button several times yet not fully satisfying my craving to listen to more of the same. Indeed, some elders, who were with me at that time, couldn't hide their obvious delight. Hats off GR.

I was referring to "kEtpathellaam kaadhal geethangaLE" sung by P Leela, here introduced by Saravanan a while back.

I often wonder why the old songs (40's, 50's and, to some extent, 60's) evoke such pleasant feelings while listening to them, even with the uncomplicated orchestra that is largely only surrogate to the basic song. In the Sindhanai sei manamE number, for example, the prelude is so delightful, and seems to converge nicely at the point where the opening lines take off. Simply brilliant stuff. Simplicity, purity, good singing, and clean music among several others, are all indeed great virtues, standing the test of time.

Oops, I was referring to "Maasila NilavE nam" song and not the "sindhanai sei manamE" number!

kAlApAni was a very different album from the Malayalam perspective...only 'mArikkootinnuLLil' -`mannan kooraichchElai' is a very poor replica- had real native flavour (and hence the biggest hit number in Kerala) while the two love duets other than the SOTD sounded very Tamilish:-)
SOTD & vandhE mAdharam were of neither 'flavour' and were both quite novel fusions from IR's storehouse.
The interludes of this song are amazing...

Song of the Day: LajjavathiyE from 4 Students.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/lajjavathiye.rm
- A brand new song from a yet to be released film. Sung and composed by Jassie Gift.
- 4 students is a remake of a malayalam film, 4 the people. The song LajjavathiyE is a massive hit in Kerala. The composer, Jassie Gift is a newcomer and is now being compared to A.R.Rahman. The song does have a different feel, but I am not sure whether it will be a hit in thamizh.

The Malayalam blockbuster 4 The People is coming to Tamil. The remade version tilted 4 Students has Boys Bharath and Gopika in the lead. It's a story of four students who fight against social evils. The audio of 4 Students was released at a recently held function at Goodluck theatres, Chennai. Three songs were screened for the media persons, out of which the song "Lajjavathiye" is a big hit in Kerala. All the songs were picturised differently by cameraman R.T.Rajshekar who shot to fame through Kakkha Kakkha. Replying to a question director Jayaraj said, "Though some people feel that it has a similar theme like Ramana, I would say the approach to the screenplay is completely different". Rajshekar who was also present on the occasion said, "Lajjavathiye song was taken in 11/2 days time and for "Annakili" song we took only six hours. It was raining almost the whole day when we were shooting these songs". Actor Sunil, producer Johny Sagarika also spoke on the occasion.
- According to Sify, 4 Students is third on the audio charts, after 7 G Rainbow Colony and New.

The Malayalam original 'lajjavathiye ninde kaLLakadakkaNNil' is sure a great hit-- we cannot escape listening to the song daily here in the Gulf, as the local Radio stations keep playing it repeatedly. However, Gift's latest album 'Rain Rain Come Again' doesn't seem to have whipped up the same euphoria.
Btw, who is the lyricist, Pazhani Bharathi or Muthukumar?

on first hearing the song is catchy.. but as u listen to it more, it looks more like a fusion or medley of differnt instruments..... it does sound like a remix of an old song at some places..
btw, what is meant by lajjavathiye??

T: lajja means bashful or modest. In this context it probably means coy! The scene, probably , is a boy running after a girl who is coy , bashful or shy!
lajjavthi= shy girl !

bb,
I think this is not the version of the song that has topped the charts in Malayalam. There are two versions in Malayalam and I think that the lyrics (and music) are slightly different.

Song of the Day: vaanamenum veedhiyilE from Annai Velankanni.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/vaanamenum.rm
- Sung by K.J.Yesudas and P.Madhuri. Music by G.Devarajan.
- I am not sure if Madhuri sang outside G.Devarajan's music in TFM. Her voice seems to be a mix of S.P.Shailaja's and Jency's.
- This was the first big hit for G.Devarajan in TFM. Other notable songs in this movie are 'neelak kadalin Oraththil' and the one that was repeated every Good Friday in oLiyum oliyum, 'dEva maindhan pOgindraan'. The film starred Gemini Ganesan,Muthuraman and a bunch of other stars. An interesting bit from an article in rediff:
Kamal never really set out to become an actor. His dream was to direct, and he started off as assistant with dance master Thankappan. He began his stint with Thankappan in Annai Velankanni, in which he also went on to appear, in a miniscule cameo, as Jesus Christ (watch for him in the scenes where Jesus carries the cross to Calvary). It is Kamal that you see in the song Deiva Mainthan Pogindraan, which details the Stations of the Cross. At the time, Kamal was in his late teens.

Wonderful song. Picturized with Gemini and Jayalalitha. I like the lyrics also. I guess it was kannadasan.
