Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Naaz/Neel, I too would be delighted to hear "Sorgathile mudivaanathu"- where VJ's subtle way of expressing Lalitha's (Sujatha) disenchantment with her married life as compared to her parents' married life(the song being sung by Sujatha and Kamal at the 25th wedding anniversary of their parents)- the longing which is reflected when VJ sings- Deepathil ondru, Karpooram ondru, erigindrathingey thunaiyaaga nindru- is amazing! Isn't this what playback singing is all about? VJ veritably becomes an actress behind the screen, as she lives the role of Lalitha and expresses a myriad of feelings as the situation demands. Just listen to 'Kalyaname oru pennoduthaan' from the same Lalitha- here Lalitha, nay VJ is the temptress, who tries to break the ice with her husband (Gemini), who seems angry and aloof, and ties to bring him to bed- hark at her 'hmmhm hmm' as she coaxes him gently- Sujatha's job was made so easy by VJ!
How green was our valley when all MDs in tfm- MSV, VB, SG, IR-- vied with one another to give, with VJ, spellbinding songs in quick succession--!
Speaking of 'Isaikku Oru Kovil', besides the enchanting 'Endrume nalla rasi', 'Azhaganavan Sri Balakrishnan' has VJ at her mellifluous best.
Kik, yes, Nilavu vandhu paadumo by PS (Raman ethanai ramanadi) is a lovely song- but it does not strictly alternate between western and classical like Kalaimagal kai veenai. The tempo in both songs keeps changing- but there the similarity ends. Nilavu vandhu paadumo is a pathos filled number, where KRV is forced by her husband (Muthu) to sing in public- her song is more a plaitive, outraged wail from the heart. Her agony reaches its zenith at the end of each verse, and there, MSV the master craftsman, shows the stuff he's made of, by increasing the tempo suddenly, and PS sings, as though in a frenzy,'Vidiyattum , vidiyum pothu vidiyattum! Mudiyattum, mudiyum pothu mudiayattum'! Then again the horror of the situation dawns on her, so again back to the slow and sad 'Nilavu vandhu paadumo--' MSV and PS together have brought about all the feelings in her heart- shame, horror, despair and finally resignation--.
Kalimagal kaiveenai, on the other hand is more of a competition between western and classical- the melnattu marumagal firmly adopting the classical line and the Ullnattu marumagal, Jayasudha toeing the western culture, and the song is a jolly bout between them, VJ singing for both effortlessly.
However, you are right about the Chandrababu song-I think from either Pathibakthi or Bandapaasam, the classical bits being sung by the veteran VN Sundaram. Again 'Dasarathanin thirumaganai dinam dinam thozhudhidu nee maname' from Devi Sridevi (1984)is also a song in this genre. Here the girl(Mahalakshmi) starts off in the classical mode and the 3-4 guys(I remember only Suresh and Dilip)who are wooing her start imagining each one of them singing with her individually, and thus the song swings to various styles, depending on each one's inclination- "My name is Django, ellorum vaango--'(!)"- thus starts the western verse! SJ sings in all the styles for the heroine, while the male voices are MV, and perhaps Deepan Chakravarthi and Surender.
Priya, Govardhanan vandhaan kuzhal eduthu is from Raga Bandhangal(1982)- another great song by the VJ-Kunnakudi combo.

Neel, I just saw that you have added both'Sorgathile' and 'Pullankuzhal mozhi' - THANK YOU! You've just made my day!
BTW, the third solo from Marumagal- "Oh, Annayaaga maarava" is a lovely song, though by SJ.
It was the most popular song from Marumagal. Neel, I also remember a SPB, SP Shailaja and VJ song 'Rajavey undhan raajiyathil thaan' where VJ (Revathi) sings sadly, while SPB-SPS (Suresh-Pavithra) sing happily- CB has done a good job in this song too.

Saravan, you took us back not just in time, but also right there into some cinema in tamil nadu, mootaboochi seat and all...Thanks for bringing those images alive.
An interesting comparison (for those who speak tamizh and hindi, though that is not essential for a discerning ear) would be to the "temptress Kalyaname" song from Lalitha/Kora Kagaz - which in hindi "Roote Roote Piya"
Sujatha and Jaya Bhaduri were perfectly cast. Vijay Anand fared only a touch better than Gemini Ganesan. The former was also younger by 10 years.
Neel have not checked the webpage yet, but I think the cat is out of the bag...front paws, at least.

Saravanan...I apologize for the more than normal typos in the above. Just that time of day.

Naaz, what about the 'Mera jeevan kora kagaz' number- by Kishore Kumar(I think). The corresponding song in tamizh was by PS- 'Vasanthangal varum munne veyyil vandhathey'. (interestingly, there is a line, which corresponds to the hindi meaning- sila naalil verum thaalil yedaaanaval--). Actually, MSV himself sang this song initially, however, due to some reason, he got PS to sing it later and its PS' version which appears on screen. I personally liked MSV's version better- he brought out so many expressions, which, however PS turned into just yet another sob song.

Naaz, don't worry about typos- I too seem to have made more than my share of them, and at all times of the day/night as well!!!

The two songs - Azhagaanavan sri balakrishnan & Endrumae nalla raasi - in "Isaikku Oru Koyil" mentioned above are really good melodies and VJ was a perfect choice for those songs (actually I thought VJ's voice suited sumalatha in the movie very well). For the sake of information I wanted to say that the originals in telugu are Aalokayae sri balakrishnam & Inni raasulayuniki respectively. The first one is a Narayanatheertha krithi and the second one is an Annamacharya krithi, both rendered beautifully by VJ alongwith SPB for the second song.

How wonderful to listen to Pulanguzhal Mozhi and Sorgathile after so many, many years! The speed with which you respond to these (what some may consider) obscure and whimsical requests will soon see your site become Nee(l)ngal Kaetavai!
VJs flute "sound" imitation on the phrase "kuzhal, kuzhal, kuzhal" towards the end of that duet is undeniably a class act. Another duet by the same team which I never tire of listening to is "Sapthaswaram punnagaiyil kandaen, sangeethaththin taalatai kaetaen" from Natakame Ullagam (V.Kumar, if I remember correctly. VJ does a similar "sensory" quiver on the word "Aadai" (Adaiyai kalaindhadum aasaiyil varum thendral," - it is tremulous and fleeting, but you can feel the "silirppu" in that word and then on into the whole line. Scintillating composition.

Saravanan,
I never did like the Kishore's Kora Kagaz. Sure, people couldn't get enough of it, and it had a lot of air-time, but that only made it all the boring for me. I don't think the fault was with Kishore's singing. It was just a tedious and dulling composition. Towards the end the song begins to sound more and more like a sermon. Yawn.
I don't recall the PS song at all. But you seem to suggest that it was another snoozer. Talk about imitating boredom!
Roote Roote is a fine, sincerely done song. Kalyaname does not disappoint either.

Added more duets with SPB. Tamil Duets 2 Page 3. Alapanai at that pace in "thangkachchippoNNu" is a walk in the park to VJ.
Saravanan, "annaiyaaga maaravaa" would have been much better with VJ. No offense, but SJ's performance is very average in that song.
Naaz, "Kalyaname does not disappoint either". Avvalavuthaanaa?? It happens to be one of my alltime favorites, along with hundreds of others :-)

Did the dukh ke andar sukh ka gyan part also have an equivalent in tamil (mera jeevan kora kaagaz) - I believe this happens late in the movie at least in the hindi version. My cassette has a bit of dialogue before this begins "archana yeh hamein kya ho gaya....blah blah...kuch bhool tumhara tha, kuch mera tha..shayad hum donon ka tha." How profound:-)
Naaz: I've listened to YSKB, but not the Birju Maharaj songs. I'll post an opinion after hearing that too.
Last night I played a random tape called sangathamizh mus: TR Paapa and lyr: Karunanidhi (yes, that one). He wrote a series of articles in the mid-80s explaining some of the sangam poems from ~2000 years ago. He included modern song versions for some of the verses - several of these were set to music by TR Paapa with PS, VJ, and Seerkaazhi Sivachidambaram singing the songs. They are all solos. There's one song which is mindblowing - VJ of course. The setting is an old woman singing about her life: she got married and then her husband went to war leaving their young son to her care. He never came back. The son grows up and goes to war too - he too never came back. VJ just brings the song to life - anything more is superfluous.

Neel D,
I meant to say that the hindi version and the tamizh version - Roote Roote and Kalyaname - are both on par as songs, and have the same charm in both languages, both renditions.
Oru Bottle Thaenil, Yendha Thuli Innum Adhigama Innipanadhu'innu kaeta, naan ennaiya pannuvaen? :-)
Let's just say every song by VJ is a different "varietal" of honey!
