It is a very nice song. hearing it for first time. it is simply amazing. both talented singers with a talented music director. POST-IR TFM didn't utilize both these singers properly. the ego clash between the artists is a curse to art.

Saravanan
LRE s Ananda thandavam from ninaithale inikkum has been left out.why?(Even the I interlude in Kavidhai arangerum neram starts with chenndai very brief though)
Chendai (is the pronounciation ok?) had been used extensively by both MSV and KVM in many of the Dance songs. For eg Madhavi PonmayilaL during the crescendo dance by one of the Thiruvithangur sisters.
the "A(H)a" at the start of Pallavi each time is lovable. Both JC and LRE have tried to outdo each other and MSV has particularly harnessed the talents of both singers to great effect.A lovely choice and a wholesome song from a good movie.
The movie was a good one too."thanumalaya" which Sambhar used to murumur everytime before saying "Ayya !Naan Avanillai nga" was well received. His original identity would be revealed when Asokan would stab him at the court gate.
Kadhal Ilavarsan took cue from the Mannnan and with the same KB did the movie Manmathaleelai, another superb performance. But can Kamal do a Naan Avanillai at the age of 54?I think, yes!Thinking of JC ,another underutilized talent.BB can think of featuring Ponenna povenna.
Narayani films ? Was it GG s II daughter s name?Sambhar hails from Pudhukottai and was a BA graduate as early as 1941.His love for Cricket took the II place over the years. He had represented the Maharaja college duirng his college days.He has a nice voice rsembling PBS s.In one interview he sang "Mayakkama" and "nilave" and took everybody by surprise. He told that he used to ask MSV"MapiLai ennakoru paatu kodra".I always used to think that MR s dialogue in Agni Nakshatram "Naan en pondattigalukku nalla pursuhana nadanthukalai aana en kuzhanthaigalukku eppavume naan naala appavathan irunthirukken" should have been GG s dialogue. When two of the country s best medical practitoners are your daughters you can say that with pride.
Envy the man who managed jodis from Vyju in 40s to Nalini in 90s.GG may have said Nan Avanillai but lot of us would love to say Naan Avarthanga!

OISG, As I have written, I was focussing on LRE's songs in KB's films in the first half of the 70s, and that is why I didn't list her songs from Bama Vijayam, Poova Thalaiya, Anubavi Raja Anubavi, Thamarai Nenjam( all 60s), Pattina Pravesam, Moondru Mudichu, Maro Charithra, Ninaithaale Inikkum (latter half of 70s) and Enga Oor Kannagi & Agnisaatchi (80s)

bb,
thank you so much for the manthaara malarE SOTD. What a pleasure to hear a rare song I've been searching for all these years! I remember bits of the visuals and the actress's face vividly (with the one-sided malayaLi koNdai and eyes outlined into fishtails with kajal.)
In general, dhool is fabulous. Everyday I discover old favorites anew. A sense of exploration has set in now: my memory teases me with fragments of some song that I thought I had long forgotten, I find it in dhooL, and feel waves of nostalgia wash over me as I listen to the song. Priceless!
Thank you.

Song of the Day: naadagam ellaam kaNdEn from Madurai veeran.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/naadagam.rm
- Sung by TMS and Jikki. Music by G.Ramanathan. Lyrics by Kannadasan.
- TMS sounds like MKT in this movie. Early in his career, TMS used to sing like MKT, and was called kutti MKT. A few initial songs of TMS were in fact misunderstood to be MKT's. Slowly, TMS established himself with films like Madurai Veeran.
- Manisegaran, our encyclopaedia, writes on this song in the thread on MGR:
6. There situations where MGR could not dominate, especially before the release of Nadodi Mannan. When Madurai Veeran was in the production stage, the producer of Krishna pictures Lena Chettiar wanted a song reflecting ancient literature. Kannadasan gave such a lyric, and it was, for G.Ramanathan an easy job to give excellent tune. Lena heard the recorded song of "Nadakamellam Kanden Unthan Aadum Vizhiyiley- aadum vizhiyile-geetham paadum mozhilyiley" This beautiful song was sung by TMS and Jikki. Lena was so impressed that he sent for Kannadasan. At the same time he sent for a garland. When Kannadaan arrived, Lena Chettiar garlanded Kannadasan and gave him some cash, saying that the words in the lyrics were excellent. Then came the filming stage. Lena made sure that the scene was very well taken. Many techniques were used to come out with an excellent song scene, where Padmini and MGR gave life to the movie. Every word in the lyrics was well acted out. We have advanced very much in cinema technology, but it is still doubted if such a scene could be shot these days. And Madurai Veeran became the first Tamil movie to be released in 4 theatres in Chennai where the film ran for 100 days in all the 4 theatres. Personally speaking I will always forget myslef whenever I play this song scene.
- Kannadasan also wrote the screenplay and dialogues for this film.
- Other songs in the film: aadal kaaNeerO, Echchu pizhaikkum, kundruthOr aadivarum, vaanga machchaan vaanga and summaa irundhaal.

Hi,
One of my all-time favourite songs set to tunes by that incomparable GR! What a song and what a set of singers! Unfortunately we can never hope to hear such songs from new films. What a pity!
And in some of the newly released cassettes of this song the 'virutham' part is missing. It's the jeevan of this number.
So too is the part sung by Jikki in that famous dance number from 'Uthamaputhiran', the part when Jikki sings in a fast-paced, breathless manner ...naanum neeyum nalla jodi, attamaga adi paadi, ........I have not heard this part in the cassettes released recently. Can SOTD feature this full song from 'Uthamaputhiran'? Will be grateful.

Song of the Day: nilaiyaaga veesudhE from Manamaalai.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/nilayaaga.rm
- Saravanan writes:
‘Nilayaaga veesuthae alaipolavae’ from Manamaalai. Sung by S Janaki. Music: Veda. Lyrics by Lakshmandas.
Janatha Pictures’ Manamaalai-1958 starred Gemini Ganesh, Savithri, Sriram and others. It was produced by actor Sriram himself. Based on a novel by Sarat Chandra Chatterjee, Manamaalai was directed by CH. Narayanamoorthi. It was a story of two children who exchange garlands in jest, and how years later, they reunite in love.
"There are good signs that, if given the chance, Savithri would blossom into a good actress. Her eyes too are attractive. Her lips communicate without themselves making any verbal articulations. In future she would turn into an excellent artiste."- This what the Casting Assistant of Gemini Studios had opined of K. Savithri when she came there as an aspiring actress. No prizes for guessing who this clairvoyant Casing Assistant who interviewed her was- none other than Savithri’s future life partner- Gemini Ganesh, who was at that time working at Gemini, and was himself waiting for that elusive break!
‘Nadigaiyar Thilagam’ Savithri (1936-1981) stands tall as a trend setting performer of Tamil and Telugu cinema. So much so that every Sonia Agarwal, Meera Jasmine or Kiran declares, without batting an eyelid, that she wishes to act in memorable roles and earn a name like that of ‘Savithriji’!
Savithri made her debut in a small role in the Telugu film Samsaram-1950. In the following year she appeared in films like Sankranthi, Palleturu and in a dance sequence in Paatala Bhairavi. It was in the role of the second heroine in ‘Pelli Chesi Choodu’ (Kalyanam Panni Paar in Tamil) in 1952, that Savithri made a splash in a big way. Devdas followed in the next year, and Savithri became a household name overnight with her sensitive performance in the role of the tragic Paro. She first paired with Gemini Ganesh in Manampola Mangalyam-1953, and they went on to become one of the most enduring screen pairs of Tamil Cinema. They got married in 1956. The film Manamaalai came about soon after their real life Manamaalai.

Veda (S Vedachalam) has been consigned to the dustbin of Tamil Cinema history as a Music Director who blatantly lifted tunes from popular Hindi songs. But discerning tfm fans still swear by Veda’s original compositions in films like Parthiban Kanavu and Anbu Engae.
Veda’s parents had settled in South Africa, and he was sent to Madras to his uncle’s house for his studies. He was attracted to the songs of Saigal, and formally learned Hindustani Music. Actor Sriram introduced him to some Srilankan film producers, and soon Veda was composing for many Singhalese films. The titles of the KR Ramasami starrer Menaka-1955 credit the Music to CN Pandurangan & S Vedachalam.
Veda’s first film as an independent MD was Marmaveeran-1956, stg. Sriram & Vyjayanthimala. Though there were 10 songs in the film, only few like ‘Thudikkum vaalibamae nodikkul poividuamae’- (Ravu Balasaraswathi), ‘Kaathirundhen romba naala’( Koka Jamnunarani) and ‘Aasai ellaam viraasaiyaanathe’(Jikki) linger on in memory.
It was in the next year that Veda made everyone sit up with his brilliant score in Anbu Engae (SSR, Balaji, Rangarao,Devika ). Songs like ‘Dindigiri dingaale’ (TMS), ‘Poovil vandu’(AMR- Jamunarani) and ‘Mele parakkum rocketu’ (Jamunarani) became immensely popular. Even the lesser heard ones like ‘Kaaya pazhama sollu raja’( (Radha) Jayalakshmi), ‘Sollu nee raja’(Ravu Balasaraswathi) and ‘Ethanai kodi panamirundhaalum’(PS) are wonderful compositions.
Manamaalai followed, and though the film was not a great success, Veda’s work therein cannot be written off so easily. ‘Thenozhugum senthamizh kaniyai’ (Seergazhi Govindarajan),‘Nenjam alaimodhave kannum kulamaagave’(PBS), ‘Nadakaathu jambam palikkadhu’ (TMS-PS), ‘Nadanam aadinaar’(PL & (Radha)Jayalakshmi) will forever bespeak the infinite capabilities of this unfairly maligned MD.

This song can hold the distinction as (most probably) SJ’s second song in tfm, and the only song ever that she sang for Veda. As we have seen earlier too, she was first heard in ‘Kannukku nerae minnidum thaarai than uru maari vandhu’, a breezy duet with PBS in Magadalanaattu Mary-1957. (Music- R Parthasarathi)
It was more than 20 years back—It was a drowsy afternoon and I had nodded off with Radio Ceylon, when suddenly I sat up with a jerk- ‘Can this be SJ?!’—I kept asking myself as I woke up towards the end of this song. To my dismay, the announcer moved on the next song, and I never got to know the song’s identity. But the opening line kept haunting me over the years. It was only recently (4-5 years back) that I heard the song again (thanks again to Ilangai vaanoli’s Nenjil Niraindhavai) and this time the announcement was loud and clear- “SJ in Manamaalai”.
Hark at how young SJ sounds, and how effortlessly she scales the high notes, all the time conveying the forlorn despair of the lyrics with a muted angst that is so becoming of her. When I sent the song to sk, I was not surprised when he too expressed his whole-hearted appreciation—“I like nilaiyaaga veesudhE very much.. that sadness that only SJ can give by her high pitch and subtle variations--" he says. Thanks to sk for the mp3 conversion.
