Hi Guys,
Check This out. Anu Malik has copied the song "Happy Birthday to You" in the film "Kareeb" .The song goes like "Tera Gussa Hai Hai". So our Xerox Machine down South Deva will soon use "Twinkle Twinkle" .Regarding him composing Keerthanai, it is the best joke I have heard in the last couple of years. Inimale Tyagarajar, Dheekshithar ,Syama Sastri ellam gaali.

Definitely the song 'malligaiYe malligaiYe ..' from Ninaithen vanDhai is the best song I would ever remember, What a great score by Deva, Can anyone confirm this is original tune ? if so no doubt Deva is just great, Also worth mentioning other songs in the same film, particularly 'vanna nilaVe'

Suresh: About that particular songs I don't know, but Deva definitely did copy atleast one song for Ninaithen Vandai - you see the movie was a remake of the Telugu hit, "Pelli sandadi" and our man lifted (atleast) one song from the original, whose MD was Keeravani.

Kaushik: The song you mentioning is 'un Marbil...'

A small digress:
Recently I was seeing "Godfather" video. The song "Raja Ko Rani Se Pyar Hogaya" in the film "Akele Hum Akele Tum" (score by the copy cat Annu Mallik) is a blatant lift of a BGM piece from the film (when Al Pacino, hiding in Sicily, goes to see the girl Apollina; the same tune is repeated at the closing credits of the movie!)

I thought 'raaja kO raaNi sE pyaar hO gayaa' was a lift frm the famous western tune, 'speak softly love'. OR is this the tune which comes in the Godfather too?

Vetty : that 'raaja kO raaNi sE pyaar hO gayaa' has been inspired (???) by the love theme from Godfather.

Killer of Copy Cats of this world :
You are 100 % right. The opening two lines of the song are a Xerox from Godfather BGM piece for the Sicily scenes.

the irony is in that movie, the villan MDs
(imitating naddem-shravan) copies this tune from
amirkhan's notebook!!!. lol. And the movie itself a cog from a english movie. So what we talking about..is deva and copying becoming synonymous?!!
- From: bull (@ ramses.erlm.siemens.de)
on: Tue Jan 19 03:34:54 EST 1999
oh the movie itself is, apart from taking a dig at Nadeem-Shravan and a few little Indianisations here and there is a scene-by-scene lift of Kramer vs. Kramer.
Anu Malik the Xerox machine of the north has copied from everyone including George Michel.

The song
'Unai ninaithu naan ennai marappathu
athuthaan anbae, kadhal kadhal'
from 'Ninaithen Vandhai'
is a direct lift from one hindi song
'dil se dil jab mil jaatha hai,
ho jaatha hai, ye pyaar ye pyaar..'
(I dont remember the movie or music director..)

i am just tracking this thread...
its surprise to see my response got vanished(and others too.. INTERNET DEMOCRACY..)
I just told that all MD's at their intial stages tried to give inspired(?!) songs to get perm place in business...
e.g.,
1.( once upon a time)Illayarja's inspirations(?!)had been constantly exposed by ceylon radio.
In " Neengal Kettavai" , song by KJY,"Kaanavukaaanum vazhkai yaavum kalainthu pokum megangkal"
beautifully penned ...our maestro copied that from hindhi..(villanpiran was singin on the screen..i couldnt remember the film name...shorlty
tell u..old movie)
One can find lot inspirations behind the old hits of raja.
2.regarding AR rahman, leading the music cavelcade
in TECHNO TORTURE,TAMIL KOLAI,INSPIRATIONS IN THE NAME OF INNOVATIONS...Its pity to see that his music has been propagated as totol rep of indian music..
so criticizing deva shows the complete ignorance of the tfm viewers...
sincerely,
maangadu virumandi.

I have been out of the loop of Deva's latest music for a while. Given that he copies a lot of tunes, I do like the fact that he lifts from good and relatively non-pop songs ( at least non-pop for most of what is played in India). I was quite surprised to hear him pick Jethro Tull in "aan Azhaga" of Kaathal Kottai. He has copied Genesis, L Sub, Bob Marley and the like, which is way better than picking Celine Dion, Madonna & trash. And his instrumentation did improve over time. Even AR Rahman copied Cure (Close to Me) in "Netri Illatha Maatram", but got away with it as the Cure is not that popular in India.
My 2 Cents worth

Anu Malik ke Pattam King of Copy Cat ,
Xerox machine. Ittu south Indian Pattam
North Indian , Anu Malik top music director.
I think somebody must tell about music
to them.
Anyway I found out something , Taal opening
music in the album is copied from Yanni's
Tribute album ( Yanni The Taj and Forbidden
City Album ).
Anu Malik and ARR actually are great people
because they listen to music that very few listen
and copied them and in case of ARR , he will do some creative mixing ( konjum plus point ).
But Deva is the greatest , everyone know where
he copied from. Deva valli thani valli because
even if he compose original music till people
will call him copycat. In Madras another meaning
of xerox is Deva.
enna Deva pavum senjarooo terillia...?
Deva's only supporter.

Rahuman has tuned Gazhal Style hits in couple of movies like Sangmam and Muthalvan esp. Varaga Nathi Karai Oram. So from his interview in Dinakaran, we learn that Deva is all set to come with "his" version of Gazhals. Poor Gazhal Singers are going get robbed of their tunes. Ushar!!!! Gazhal Singers of North, copyright your Gazhal songs.
