I see many people praise neethyashree but how much shes better compared to pavathaarini?Pavathaarini has the most innocent, fresh voice among the newsingers today, whereas neethyashree know only to shout. Listen to 'kadal meethu' or 'kanmaneekku vaaltu chollum', pavathaarini is excellent.
Please let me know your opinions

Whichever hit that Bavadharini has given has been a hit not because of her but in spite of her. Her voice lacks distinctly in the ability to sing the various nuances of a "difficult" song like the one in Kaadhal kavidhai.
Nithyasree could do well in restricting herself to Carnatic classical

NOV,
I call it atrocious singing. Like I'd written earlier, look at the way she struggles. She gasps like anything to complete the first line even!!
Harini might've done a better job.

For those of you from M'sia, Channel 6 will be airing an interview with Nithyasree at 10.10 pm tonight(May 20).
I only heard the tail end of the announcement today morning but she was refered as a famous(???)
playback singer.

Krish: After the KANNODU song, Nithyashree shot to fame, she became a household name, not for her BRILLIANT Carnatic ability, but as a Playback singer - A good example for this, in her London Concerts, the audience BEGGED her to sing Kannodu, and she sang it after much persuasion, only after singing th Mangalam. The concert halls were packed, a full house each time, but very few of those people would have gone if not for the Kannodu song. Many have absolutely no knowledge of Carnatic Music and would not have gone if it was a concert by TVG, for example.
To second this, Nithyashree has now sung for ARR, YSR, Deva, Adithyan and IR himself. For 1 year of playback singing and numerous Carnatic engagements, tours, e.t.c., One could definitely refer to her as famous, as would many others. She is now famous for playback singing, she is known by all, as her first Film song was a major hit, which even 2 year old children would try to sing..... :)
In Kandukonden Kandukonden, Nithyashree does some BGM, Rajiv Menon is very Carnatic Savvy, hence knows how to best use her. In Padayappa, ARR has used her effectively, she portrays the character of Neelambari(Jayalalitha clone) very well, many have mentioned that it is shouting, but please see the scene and the appropriateness of her voice and singing style. As for songs like Puyale Vaa and Poove Poove, the MD has not modulated some of the harshness of the voice like ARR did for Kannodu. It was too raw a performance for a film song. In Kaadhal Nila(Vennilave Vennilave Film), she has sung very well, a good team up with Hariharan, who does the Hindustaani style, while Nithya did the Carnatic equivalent Gamakams very well. I'm really looking forward to her number from IR.
As for Bhavadharini, she has a lot of room for improvement, apparently she is aiming to give a Carnatic concert - at the moment it is definitely not possible, as her Shruthi handling is awful. Shruthi appears to be a family peoblem, to quote Rajiv, "Avanga Famillykku Shruthie Seraadhu - evalavvu talent vatchirudhhalum, Shruthi Musickku very important illaiyaa?!"
If you remember, Unni Menon hadn't been singing for a while, apparently ARR had nearly hit him, as he sings well and has a nice voice, but couldn't sing in Shruthi. He underwent a lot of training, before re-appearing in ARR's music, in Dil Se. This is how important Shruthi is in music. (I have a reliable source, not Sivamani this time - though he's in England for the World cup - Jeetna Hai Today Today - we went to the match yesterday :)
To compare Nithyashree with Bhavadharini is very wrong in my books, one is a Carnatic singer, with tremendous potential and a lot of acclaim, the other is only where she is because of her famous Father, who touts her whenever possible, maybe to cut costs of using a Real singer like Chithra or Sujatha or even Harini.
Bhavadharini has a lot of difficulty with Gamakhams/Brikas too. The only asset she has is her 'innocent' 'child-like' voice, but even with this, Harini comes out tops with practically every song she sings, having a similar 'young' sounding voice.

Geetha nice to have your comments. I like Nithyasree's singing a lot. Very different songs that Kannodu Kanbedallame and Minsara Kanna. Amazing singing talent. By the way, is Mahalakshi also introduced by ARR. What aout Shankar Mahadevan? Nitya Shree is definitely a ARR gift to TFM.

Gita,
Nice posting. But even then, when compared to Singers like SJ, KSC or Sujata, Nithyashree is still a neophyte. To write with some candor, she's got a bad voice. Bhava has got a sweeter voice but her singing is simply atrocious.

I don't think it's a question of good or bad voice. If you have noticed, most of the female carnatic singers have a very strong voice. In TFM, they prefer delicate voices such as Chitra's. But of course, I don't know how true this is considering that Chitra had also trained to become a carnatic singer. I used to think that singing carnatic music made one's voice strong, but I am not sure. Does anyone know?

I did tune in to NS interview on radio 6 last week.
She was in M'sia for a Carnatic Concert. She did talk a bit about her background etc.She mentioned that her grandmother was also a carnatic singer.
Regarding how she got the chance to sing the Kannodu song, she said that she got a call from ARR's office to record a song for him.She was very apprehensive and she told ARR that she has no whatsever experience to sing a cinema song.ARR told that is exactly what he is looking for - a fresh voice .According to NS the entire Kannodu was recorded within an hour.
She admitted she become famous after Kannodu, something that did not happen during the years of carnatic concerts/albums. She related an incident where the driver of the taxi she was in went on and on about the Kannodu song without knowing that the actual singer is sitting in his cab.
The interviewer asked her about the Minsara Kanna song and she said that ARR explained to her that she would be singing for Ramya and it is a role of a very arrogant & aggressive person. She sang to suit the situation according to herinterpretation.
This time around it took about 4-5 hrs to record the song.
She sang a few stanzas from her carnatic album.IMHO I think she has a very good voice (the "very strong voice" according to aruvi)
Even in M'sia I think she is only known for Kannodu and MK.The interviewer asked her if she will be singing any of her TF songs during the concert. She answered hesitantly, reluctantly yes but only after the concert. She said that she has received a lot of requests from her fans in M'sia to sing Kannodu.
She spoke excellent Tamil and even the interviewer complimented her on it.I think this a +++ for a TFM singer.
Coming back to the topic of this discussion, I agree with Geetha that you just cannot compare NS with Bhava. It is like comparing a Pentium II with a 286 . I find Bhava's voice very youngish, immature and I personally don't like it. I loved NS's rendition of Kannodu & MK. Her voice added the "zing" to both the songs and got me addicted to Kannodu and MK. I can't relate to her singing Poova(4X) in PVK, I prefered UnniK's Poova(4X). Maybe NS voice suits better to songs that have Carnatic elements.

krish,
thanks for your note on NS' interview. IMO, NS's voice suited Minsaara kanna though many DFers felt it was more of a "shouting". She excels in high pitch, and with newer songs, one will be able to ascertain her talents as a playback singer. The lesser said about bhavadharini, the better.

Bhava grew up just bcos of her family members like IR, KR, YSR. Where us Nithyashree is a talented well trained musician, grew up with her skills.
Bhava is no where near Nityashree, infact anyone for that matter Tell me on hit!, I mean real hit or at least one good song by Bhava in IR Circle or Non-IR circle.
NS just sang one for arr, she is now very famous and busy. This is bcos of her talents.
We are talking about difference between a raw sound and a Human voice.
Just one sample: Bhava cannot even touch 5k shruthi, if at all she goes it will be filled with 100% pisuru., NS can go up to 8+k without pisuru.

hayyo paavam... Nityashree kku ipdi oru kodumaya? She hails from 2 of the greatest traditions in Carnatic Music _ DK Pattamal from the Paternal side and Palghat Mani Iyer on the Maternal side... she has laya, bhava and life in her music... I do agree that she should restrict herself to carnatic based cine songs and also pay a little more attention to her tonal modulations when it comes to cine songs...
but Bhavatharini on the other hand has neither bhava nor brigga nor sruthi in whatever she is singing.... she is probably too young to be criticised too... but when one is in the public arena, criticisms do flow in! her voice modulations are horrible and her voice is pretty inflexible... havent heard any of her latest numbers... may be she is better now!

Nithyasree needs to read a page of Thirukkural everyday to get her accent more Thamizh-friendly. That's the only knock on her. Other than that, MDs should know what kind of songs to give her. She excels in "Kannodu Kaanbathellaam" and "Sowkiyamaa" and falls from grace in "Poove Poove Poove" and "Minsaarak Kannaa". The latter two failed because she used Carnatic-style pipes for simple pop songs.
Bhavatharini would have to drink a shot of fine Scotch everyday for several years to get her voice music-friendly. Look up nepotism in a visual dictionary, it will have her photo in it.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
DO you think Shruthi is a family problem for IR. If shruthi is a problem for IR he would not have innumerable no. of ever lasting melodies. He is an expert in creating tunes and bringing out the best of the singers the way he wants the songs to be sung. If he sings in wrong shruthi and tallam when he composes a song then the singer also would be
forced to sing in the wrong shruthi. Could you name one single song of IR's music which is out of Shruthi. I can't think of even one of his 700+ movies. Unlike, ARR's music I can name a few.
1. Thaiyya, Thaiyya (The Tallam on the end of 1 pallavi)
2. Ennavalle..Ennavalle - Right at the beginning, a sharp shift in Shruthi.
The prevailing trend now in TFM is don't bother about shruthi, Tallam but focus on
catchy tunes and high pitch singing like Thaiya..Thaiya.. for e.g and miss the tallam where ever you feel like.
I don't like to bring ARR in this discussion. But he is one the main culprit is breaking the basic rules of the music, i.e, Tallam and Shruthi.
