stories, anecdotes, tit-bits etc, related to TFM. A newcomer to
the forum will find this collection very interesting to read. For
example, Ramki mentioned the following story in another thread:
Do you remember the 'vizhiyil vizhundhu' (alaigal oyvadhillai) song?

Director Agathian film songs:
In 1996, when I watched the movie Kadal Kottai, I liked the Song Nalam , NAlamaria Aaval very much. It become the most popular Song almost a year in most part of the world, in Oli 96.8 FM Singapore they used to play 2 to 3 times in a day.
The song also gave break to Anuradha Sriram (She is one female singer whose mother tongue is tamil and hence read write and speak in tamil properly. In one interview in Oli she said she is patchai Tamilachi). But the point is no one gave the credit for Agathian who wrote the song. Many people dont know that the song was written by him. In his next film Gokulathil Seethai also he wrote some nice songs like Nilave va, Enthan Kural kettu etc. In the film Vidukatai the song Idhayam idhayam inaikirathe is very good one. In movie Santhosam the song Sethumadhava unai serthu anaikava is also good.
I think if a director, who is also incharge of story screenplay, can write better songs than others even if they are average in poetry or kavithaikal.

Arul: Thanks for that information, I wasn't aware of Agathiyan for Nalam Nalam Aria Aaval....It was a great song.....The lyrics were so apt, clear and concise, and nothing could have suited the situation better.
Digression: By the way, has Deva copied "Nalam Nalam Ariya Aaval" from anyone? If not, was it one of his few Original songs? I'm very interested in knowing, as it had fantastic orchestration and a beautiful tune.....
No_Nov(Bones): How comes Nithyashree actually sang 'Kannodu' then? If ARR was so annoyed with her, how did he allow her to gain fame by this song? Is it because he's Not Arrogant and instead of excuding her for her talent, he still used her as he felt she suited the song best?
Thnaks to you all for the IR ARR Ring explanations.....

I dont agree to this geetha,
This song has lot "thekam" or gaps ...I feel most score in the tune has been improvised by SPB...
The song meter sounds more like Enthan Nenjil
For this tune - one can compose a better bgm
(I am not boasting - I feel I can do much better..) - It is all Deva's time... which is very good now...
Other than the pallavi nothing is coming to me mind....must be for most of them.
As this tv film music program plays only the pallavi in all the programs - it catches very quickly.. At times ARR follows this...
The priciple of Catchy Pallavi .....
People are not worried about other parts of the song...

Srikanth: But the Krishnaraj version is also excellent(SPB sang the version that appeared in the film, there was another one on the CD which I liked equally)....What thekam/Gaps do you mean? I don't understand. When you say song meter, do you mean the Tala?....again, I don't understand, is it the pace or rhythm, as these can both be coincedences, like a lot of Carnatic pieces....What is the principle of catchy pallavi? As the lyrics are so good, I remember the anu-pallavi and charanam very well. In the end, it looks like it is a Deva original, am I right? By the way, thanks for the prompt reply.

I can not agree more with Srikanth. Unfortunately, we had to perform this song in one of our gigs. Except for the prelude 12 string guitar, the whole
orchestration is dull and wanders without purpose. Especially, the second interlude, after the flute, the keyboard plays some nonsense melody. It was so
boring that we dropped the second interlude and played only the first interlude again. Our guitarist/arranger Ramani, improvised on the chords to make it more interesting for us. SPB takes full credit. The tune itself sounds like a inspired 70s MSV tune. But poor inspiration.

I think Bones was talking about some
recent incident, I guess after her first
song 'kannOdu'. Am I right, Bones?

Hi,
Sorry for using jargons of our tfm understood by the TFM musicians only..
Gap /Theikam - means no interludes..
there are many gaps in the song...
when the sentence ends...
Nalam Nalam Ariya aaval ...there should be something - atleast a bass piece..
(there is the same repeated guitar piece - the song itself played in the guitar.)
Bass scores : it is just a single note bass piece..
As sridhar points there is nothing for the musician to play in the song..
More like a national anthem...
Even I was playing it on the stage..kadamaye..inu vasipen...
I will improvise with slap basses and other things that occurs to my little brain on the stage..
Meter : - nearest to same tempo + feel + chords etc..
I dont have good words to explain it. i will try...

Geetha, Original! Deva! come on!
He 'Lifted' (what else he will do) the song. The song was based on one songs from KennyG. I don't remember the KennyG song name but i am sure he lifted it from KennyG and tried to tune for TFM. Although I like to hear the song, I don't give very much credit to deva.(Maybe Remix credit)
The title song of "Kadhal kootai" is totally lifted from English song. Recently KennyG has become DEVA's Favourite. The song
"Kaadhali Kaadhali..." by Hariharan in Avvai shanmugi is partially lifted from KennyG. and the Humming Ohho.. Ohho....from another Album.
After all these partial 'Lifting' success he decided to totally Lifted a tune from KennyG. The song was also running top of the charts when I was in INDIA. "Poovey Nee Aadava.." in the last Balachander film. One-to-copy of tune and
orchestration from KennyG. If KennyG sues HIM.
DEVA will go bankrupt. I even wondered whether he scored the music or remixed only the Voice ( Just Kidding). ITs a XEROX of KennyG song.
We can give him a name a COPYCAT. How many songs he has copied. He has tried his hand on Micheal Jackson (Metro Channel..) . Dr. Alban (Uusi mala kathu-Vijakanth Film). Khaleed (Didi) Alli Alli Anarkalli -Rajnikanth film. I don't know where this is going to END. I have totally stop TRUSTING DEVA.
OK He give hits in TFM in top 10 countdown like ARR, VIdyasagar, Sirpi.. All same products with differrent names. Except for ARR is few songs. But ARR has set a bad trend too, which makes
things easy from these guys
TFM following paths of HFM..(Anu malik, Anand-Milind, Bappi Lahiri,...).

Geetha & MPR:
The following was reported in Kungumam, 26th June 98
issue which Bones was talking about:
After Jeans, ARR wanted to use Nithyasree for
a song in another movie. He had already talked
to her about this, got her consent, and also
fixed a certain date and time also. On that fixed
date, it seems Nithyasree's husband called ARR
and told him that she was not in town; but, it
seems she was actually in town! Strangely, one
hour after that, he called ARR again
and asked: 'What to you need Nithyasree for?'
It seems ARR was very upset by that question
and decided another female singer instead of
Nithyasree for that song. The fellow, iLangkavi
Kuppusamy, who wrote this piece of news, concludes
by asking: 'vaLarndhu varum nEraththil Nithyasree-kku
idhu thEvaithaanaa?'

Thanks for pointing the article. ARR's friendly comments
on IR are to be particularly noted.
Since this article may be removed from that site
soon, it may be a good idea to request Ravi/Rajaraman
to copy it to newtfmpage.com and put the new link here.

You're welcome. Their discussion about
new songs of Raaja points out that ARR
indeed listens to other MDs music.
Now, that's interesting :)))

Read my small tit-bits in the "who is best KR or YSR" thread about YSR's interview in Kumudaham.
In that YSR says that he & the rest of the family
listen to ARR's songs at home - but when asked
about appa IR - he sothapified and said NO.
