He has produced some really great music, especially in Malayalam. But I was wondering about some of his tamil ventures. I know he has some movies in tamil. I heard one and it was pretty good. The movie's name, I think, was called "Thaye Nee Thunai" or something like that. Anyone heard the music to this movie?

Ravindran is a living genius. he is not known much outised (other than among a set of connoissseurs) coz he confined himself to mallu films.
Johnson is a composer of his own standing and his forte is background scores. It is difficult to imagine thoovanathumbikal, koodevide, minnaminunginte nurungu vettam and thaazhvaram without the haunting score of johnson. No wonder he won 2 national awards for best music direction on the strength of his back gorund score alone.

His private album VASANTHA GEETHANGAL is a very superb one .The best of the lot is
Maamaangam sung by KJY.
There's another duet by KSC and KJY another good one.

Yesudas is light years ahead of Jayachandran in what ever criteria are there in music.Surely age has caught up with him, but that doesn't mean he has lost all his skills. He's much better than most of the singers around.Where was Jayachandran when KJY was at his best(from late 60's- till early 90's).
And one more thing Jayachandran's rendition follows the same pattern. All songs convey a mood of loneliness and regarding comments like Yesudas was lucky and Famous and thats why Jayachandran didn't get much of a chance is all crap.U won't survive for long if u only have luck at ur side but no talent.Infact Jayachandran had a better background when he came to playback scene.KJY rose from very humble beginnings to become the living legend he is now. I can't even imagine anyone rendering Baburaj's songs better than KJY. Just think of 'Oru pushpam maathramen".The voice modulation is amazing. U can single out hundreds of gems from KJY. This is no way to degrade Jayachandran. He's some excellent songs which r so blissful in listening to, but comparing KJY with Jayachandran......Its a joke. And last but not the least. Both are malayalis and we should be proud of that and its the music that binds us together.

'oru pushpam' is an awesome Desh by Baburaj and magnificently sung by KJY. What about the classics that he has sung for Dakshinamurthy? Jayachandran cannot hold a candle to him. Listen to 'sanyasini', 'alli ambal', 'nagaram nagaram'. Wow! makes me truly nostalgic. Where is that kind of music these days?

Raghu, how about Rajashilpi (1992)? That had 4 great songs (I remember 'Arivin Nilave', set to raaga Mohanam, and 'Kaaveri Paadmini' set to Sudhasaveri).
Right now, I am listening to the songs in Soorya Gayathri. 'Aalila' is an amazing piece of Abhogi, though the starting line of the pallavi reminds me of 'Indraikku Enintha' in Vaideki Kaathirunthaal. 'Thamburu' in the same film is a great piece of Kamavardhani (Nice to see Ravs use a Melakarta raaga for once).
BTW, did the film Neelakadambu ever release?

RAVEENDRAN IS THE BEST MUSIC DIRECTOR IN MALAYALAM CINEMA NOW. OTHER MUSIC DIRECTORS
[eg: VIDYASAGAR]SCORE THE MUSIC FIRST AND THEN THE LYRICS ARE WRITTEN.BUT MOST OF RAVEENDRANS SONGS ARE SET TO TUNE AFTER LYRICS ARE WRITTEN.THAT REQUIRES REAL TALENT

Catch Ravindran in the weekly interview in Asianet at 9:00 pm - Sangeetha saagaram - Mondasy - Friday - In fact the programme is a treat for music lovers ( including others running on MG Sreekumar,KS Chithra,SP Balasubramainam.
In the last interview, Ravindran had mentioned that Vidyasagar,Mohan Sitara,Johnson,S.Balakrishnan,SPVenkatesh, sharath had all worked as assistants to him at some point & that 1. He has sung a song for most of them when they called him to sing after becoming independent music directors. 2.Many of them still play as musicians for his songs when he calls them . I am their elder brother - he said.....
What a healthy trend.
Raghu, A correction to the earlier message of yours - Music of thoovanathumbigal is by Perumbavoor G Ravindranath. Music for Thaazhvaaram is by Director Bharathan himself (Yes - Of the same Thevar Magan fame).

Jeevan,
"Most of Raveendran's songs are tuned to prewritten lyrics. That requires real talent."
I thought it took more talent to write the tune before the lyrics, because that is what I have a harder time with. I prefer composing the tune to the lyrics rather than otherwise. Just my thoughts.

Right now I am listening to the songs in 'Arayannagalude Veedu.' Although there are no songs set to Sudhasaveri or Revathy (Ravs' favorite raagas), there is no cheesy orchestration. Thus, they are so far quite a pleasant change from many of the trashy songs in 'The President', 'Njaan Salperu Ramakkutty', etc. Though to be fair, Ravs has given one super hit song in the latter film, some Aarabhi-based tune sung by MG Sreekumar.
On the other hand, most of the songs in his latest 'Mizhirandilum' are quite pleasant to hear (jibi, evaluation please).

Also, I would like to add that at the present moment, I am enamoured by the compositions of a fellow named Bombay Ravi (any relation to Ravindran, I wonder?), whom, NOM now, I think has given some better folk tunes. But since I don't know if this guy has scored any Tamil films, I don't know if it is appropriate to mention him here...

Ravindran hiumself admited that hes is here only becoz of yesudas.Thats why hes doing much songs with yesudas.becoz of musical gaags like this(ravindran-yesudas,mg sreekumar-priyan)we didnt have the luck to hear lots from the rare talented singers like gvenugopal and unnimeneon.

Ravindran apart from being a great composer is an awesome singer. If he had chosen to make a living out of classical singing quite a few vocalists wouldn't be around today. His music is unique and unapproachable in class or complexity.

Purv, Bombay Ravi is an amazing music director - he is around 70 - has composed several old Hindi tunes , including the one from the movie Nikaah, 'di le armaan' sung by Salma Agha.
M.G. Sreekumar is the luckiest chap in playback singing - his voice is not that good - but he used the "gang" of Priyadarshan and Mohanlal to indirectly coerce producers to give him songs.
In the process, as Thulasi said, we didn't get to hear too many songs from the more talented singers - Unni Menon and G. Venugopal.
Fortunately, Unni Menon was well received by the Tamil audience - ARR gave him so many hits and is one of the most popular singers today.

Manoj, you seem like a very knowledgeable chap.
thulasi, interesting insight. Well, I suppose we all have our weakspots.
Have we seen Raveendran use Unnimenon? I can't think of any songs.

Hi,
Could some one please let me know how i could download the song "sumuho thamaya swasthi " from the film Kamaladalam. This song is required for a dance program in the USA . We enquired in local indian shops but they do not have the CD/cassette as it is an old movie more over we are running short of time to arrange for this CD/cassette from Kerala.

jimmy.
