Off late, K S Chitra has become one of my hot favourites amongst female singers. Her voice has a unique and rich timbre which I really enjoy. lets take this opportunity to discuss songs by her in Tamil and various other languages - Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu. Her songs sung under the tutelage of Ilayaraja, AR Rehman, Ravindran et al are really excellent, moreover she has a delightful classical touch as is seen in her rendition of "alaipayuthe" and the Sindhubhairavi songs. She has done a great deal of Hindu and Christian devotional albums in Southern languages...lets discuss those. My favourite Chitra song so far remains "gopika vasantham" and her duet with SPB in the Telugu
movie Swathikiranam. What a voice and that sharpness!
So please, lets discuss her songs!! :-)
(If this topic has been discussed in full detail - similar to the Vani Jairam thread - please post a link to it). Otherwise lets make this an encyclopedia of KSC songs.

Some more of chitra's good numbers I can remeber are:
(1) poove poochooduvaa ( though KJY beats her hands down in his solo rendition)
(2) muththamizk kaviye varuga- (raga gowri manohari)
(3) meera varuvaaLA - (raga gowri manohari)
(4) yaamini nilaavulaavum (M) - a fabulous song with Unni K from Mangalam veettil maaneswari gupta
(5) nagumo hey sugamo - with HH from arunachalam - chitra's aalaap in the middle of the song is just too good.
(6) mudhan mudhalil paarhthen kaadhal vandhadhe - This song was lifted from Hindi by Deva. The original is "sOchenge tuje pyaar" by Kumar Sanu. Thank my good luck for having not let me listen to the original first. The incompetance of KS is brought out beautifully by the combined rendition of Chitra and HH. Te song is full of improvisations and emotive singing.
(7) karaiyaadha mananum uNdo - KJY,KSC-This song is kind of overlooked since it did not find place in the movie. This song is composed in a rare raga - gaangEya BhusahaNi (courtesy -IR of ROS) and delivered beautifully by both. The second charaNam is a treat to ears. Two mrudhangams of different scales are used to accompany the singers and the usage of them alternates every line. This is really a singers' song from IR which is kind of rare since most of the IR's songs are known more for IR than the singers themselves.
(8-10) ya ya ya yaadhava / azagiya kaarthigai deepangaL aadum / chinna chinna mEgam enna - All these songs find place in a movie which starred Arvind swamy with Shreedhevi. Composed by MaragathamaNi (aka kheravaNi / m.m.Kreem), they easily find place in all chita lovers list. The movie was made in three languages (only to flop heavily except in mallu) and all were equally pleasing. "Ya ya" is the pick of the lot for its melody content. Somehow the words sound better in mallu for the song "azagiya kaarthigai dheepangaL" (shashikala chaarthiya). THe third song chinna chinna mEgam was reNdered by Unni K - KSC in tamil and its mallu equivalent - shishirakaala mEgha mithuna - was reNdered by PJ - KSC. This is a good addition to the list of chitra's numbers.
(11) Ariyaathe Ariyaathe(M) - I heard this solo of chitra once from a stage recording. Simply brilliant. A very good melody
(12) Aandholanam dholanam(M) - A song for all melody lovers for all seasons. Composed by Bombay Ravi and rendered by KJY-KSC with a guru-shishya mould. This song is set in raga kEdaar gowla. The entire album Sargam is a must buy for all who love Chitra/ KJY 's voice.
(13) Thaimaavin thaNalil (M) - From the movie yaathramozi starring mohanlal and shivaji. This song and the song "pon veyilile" (mentioned by Vijay) are stunners from Ilaiyaraja. IMO, songs of these kind can be found in NO other languges /gnere including MFM. These two stamp on why IR is supreme when it comes to orchestral melodies espoecially choral ones. Both songs are rendered by MGS-Chitra.
'll write more later..pardon me for the typos.
Somebody here mentioned that he/ she has heard songs of Devadaasi. I have been trying hard to get atleast one song from that movie rendered by Unni Krishanan (sudha mantram). I have head thsi once or twice in a unquoteworthy program in SUN tv. Can that persn share more info about both the songs - the one by Chitra and UK ?
thx

I wrote about the Devadaasi songs. There are two songs by UK "sudha manthram" and another song in the same tune but with totally different lyrics. A third song is by UK & KSC. UK's solo song is a very complex tune and a challenging song for the singer. In fact, UK himself, has admitted that that song was one of the most difficult movie songs he ever had to render. Unfortunately, I have the CD at home and am unable to provide more information than this at this time. I shall listen to the songs tonight and write more about it tomorrow.
If you are interested, the CD of Devadaasi (which is a combo with "Summer in Bethlehem", one of my favorites of Vidyasagar) is available at www.themahal.com.
Has anyone heard the songs from "Summer in Bethlehem"(MD: Vidyasagar). One of the very melodious numbers in that movie is "Oru raathri koodi vidavaahnnavae" by Chithra and KJY - a very beautiful, soothing melody.

Kaumudi:
thx for the info. I have heard Summer in behelehem. Yes the song "oru rathri" is indeed one of those beautiful songs oozing melody in every note. It starts with the aalaap of KJY. A frank assessment tells me (inspit of my genuine respect and idolizing tendencies towards him) that he struggles very much in the song with his unstable vibrato, which was masked only by a good recording technique. A better choice would have been MGS. Chitra as usual does her job neatly and appreciatively.
there are two more songs of Vidhyaasaagar both in Tamil - Malare Mouname (SPB/SJ) and Neekaatru naan maram (HH/KSC) in the same lines as oru rathri koodi. All three are based based on Darbaari kaanada (though oru rathri is a little loosely done so).

I would have preferred Biju Narayanan or Jayachandran to MGS if at all KJY has to be replaced in the "Oru raathri" song. I somehow feel MGS is, more often than not, nasal in his renditions. But then, that's just my opinion. I haven't heard enough of his songs anyway.

Did Chithra sing "Intha veenaiku theriyaadhu, athai seithavan yaar enru"?(female version) If so, that is another sweet song from her.
