please tell me are there any songs matchless as these above four, a small list, in terms of purity, melody and timelessness? Tell me seriously. IR may have brought many startling themes, but re hear again the above songs and you will see the difference in the art of composing melodies without depending on western themes

My vote:
Kodiyile Malligappu Manakkudhe Maane... from
Kadalora Kavidhaigal.
Sheer melody and the interludes, particularly, the second one.
Please listen to it tonight and tell me what its like.
This guy Bharathiraja owes IR everything that he has.

I don't believe in the idea of THE best song. However, there is a set of best songs that I would treasure. So what we are looking for is solving the maximal clique problem (where there is an edge between two songs that are equally great) which is NP complete and so will take exponential time to find out (atleast with IR).
Non-CS guys: sorry for the CS terminology.

My all time fav rankings goes to 2 songs,
1.Valai oosai......from Sathya. Absolutely superb bass guitar, flute progression in the first interlude and Lata + SPB combo goes all high.
2.Yamunai aatrile.....from Thalapathy. A small song indeed, but what an effect it has when you hear it. Hat's of Mr.IR. Naanga kuduthu vechavaga.

My all time best song is "Kannae Kalaimahne.." in Moondram Pirai. Somealso remarked this before in this forum.
Until I had a high end audio system I never noticed the beauty of the solo violin that closely follows KJY's voice. It is very subtle. That plus the back ground "jumkujuchum--chu-jum--jumkujuchum" (Thabala or what? I am not sure!) sounding rythm is sort of a soothing lullaby for a broken heart! It is just so amazing that IR created such a tune and blended with some simple instruments. There lies his genius ! Hats of Sir!

I assume all of us posting here know that to select ONE 'favourite' song is itself very tough and the idea of choosing an all time great borders a bit on absurdity. However, now that we are into it, i can immediately think of only "andhi mazhai pozhigiradhu.." from raaja paarvai. i dont know why but whenever i think of one favourite song i always think about it. what a fascinating song! It would have been great if it was composed a little later when technology was much better(though not as much today when it pretty much decides everything!)Sometime like when thalapathi came out. 'raakkamma' kind of recording would bring out the full brilliance of the violins and other instruments that blend into the song so beautifully. I wonder why no one else has mentioned this song.

What about "Vegam" from Anjali. Its a very unique song. The song of the century. The percussion and the interludes..
Whenever I listen to that song, I get lost somewhere, I feel like I don't belong to this world. IR is a genius.
Wonder if he'll ever be able to give songs of such
class again...

Hi
My vote goes for the song "poove poochudavaa" from the film poove poochudavaa. Excellent melodious song, beautiful lyrics, great music and to top it off the sweetest voice I have ever heard, K.S.Chitra. Of course, the male version by KJY is also good but his rendering is rich although it doesn't appeal to me as much as Chitra's version does.

Vimal:
I love the prelude of "Vegam" very much. Though this song didn't get enough notice than "Something" or "Mottai Maadi", I would rate this one the best. The second interlude has a wonderful flute piece - just mesmerising.
I left out some of my greatest favourites in my earlier post :
1) Sangathil Paadadha Kavidhai - Thanks Vels for putting this in his site http://members.tripod.com/velsree/
2) En Vaanile [Johny]
3) Thaalaattum Poongatru [Gopura Vaasalile]
4) Poongatru Pudhiranadhu [Moonrampirai]
5) Sendhazhampoovil [Mullum Malarum]
6) Poongadhave [Nizhalgal]
7) Pothi Vacha [Man Vasanai]
8) Raja Raja Chozhan [Rettai Vaal Kuruvi]
9) Kalyana Maalai [Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal]
10) Ilam Pani Thulir Vidum Neram [???]
Thanks to Rex for bringing most of the above songs to the web.

Vimal and Muralidharan:
In "Vegam, Vegam" from Anjali, listen to the violins in the interludes. They sound so pacy and vibrant. Just pay attention when each interlude ends and the charanam begins, the violins merge so beautifully changing pace sooo smoothly that you'll hardly notice it ! Definitely one of IR's best !

aruvi:
Chitra's voice is infinitely more melodious than KJY's in this song - but then KJY has emoted so much more in his version. This is also one of my favourite songs from one of my fave movies !

Srinath
I am also a great fan of KJY and love his sad songs and classicals but I don't know, even though I have heard his rendering of the same song, it doesn't click more to me. Maybe because I get so involved with the song and probably considering that I am a female, Chitra's version attracts me more. I don't know, it could be some human psychology thing or something. And considering that this was Chitra's 2nd movie in tamil, I suppose you are right about the emotions although I don't seem to find anything missing.
But then I have to give a lot of credit for IR for making this wonderful song.

There are many such numbers in MFM as well as non-filmy Malayalam albums where KJY & KSC have sung the same song. In each of them KSC version is better, IMO! (KJY is my most fav singer BTW) To state an example: Poonkuruvi nee, pullankuzhaloothi in the album Ende Vaanam Paadi.

Sorry, it is Ende Vaanampadi (My skylark). BTW, one KJY-KSC song will adore my top ten list, though not the top spot - Then Paandithamizhe (I don't remember the movie, is it Pasapparavaigal?). Apart from great tune & the singing by these two, the music is excellent. Just listen to the first interlude which is out of the world!

Srinath,
Thanks a lot. In the "Creativity of IR" thread, I've enquired about the songs of "Anjali". I really think they should be definitely special.
Can you write some "Technical" facts about the songs in that thread? One think I noticed was the percussion. "Iravu Nilavu.." has got an entirely different beat. I think Sivamani was the drummer for the songs. Can you please enlighten me more..?
