The beauty that is nature at dawn has been captured and described very beautifully in many songs by our lyricists, MDs, and directors. Some examples are the songs :
Puththam pudhu kAlai ponnira vELai ,
KAlai panniyil
KAlai nEra poonguyil , etc.
These are examples from my limited repertoire of songs. Obviously, there are better and older examples of songs, in which the beauty of dawn has been described excellently (by Kaviarasar, et al).
So, why don't we get to see how beautiful words have described the beauty of dawn...

Raja:
One more song (an wonderful one by PSusheela)
from Idhaya Kamalam that Kanchana missed:
ennadhaan ragasiyamO idhayaththilE
ninaiththaal enakkE sirippu varum samayaththilE
If you haven't listened to the songs of Idhaya
Kamalam, you have missed something.
Viswa:
In malargaL nanaindhana paniyaalE, KRV
gets up from bed and goes about doing her household work,
as she sings the song. When the charaNam comes,
Ravichandran also gets up from bed, and follows
her wherever she goes, silently, without her
knowing; she notices his movements only at
the end of the song. What I've written makes the song look
ordinary, but the picturization is very good --
interesting and a bit amusing too.

Satya,
Interestingly, KVM has given a song for a similar situation in a telugu film called "Muthyala Moggu". It is also a terrific song. If you have any Telugu friends, check out this song. ("Muthyamantha Pasupu")

whenever i think of dawn, i am reminded of that magical voice of SJ rich even now in "kaalai thendral" in uyarndha ullam. esspecially the place "urungum manidane udane vaa vaa", her voice almost beckons those under the covers. what a great song and what melody by Raaja? the lyrics are also wonderful keeping the spirit of the early morning.
"kaalaiyin pudumaiyai ariyave illai
iyarkayin baashaigal puriyave illai"
true! one must get early before 5 am and go into the streets to really forget the humdrum of our mechanical lives. listen to the various birds, the sweeping breeze, the calm atmosphere full of vibrancy (what a paradox?)
thanks siva for suggesting this topic! dawn means a lot to many and almost everything is pleasant

NOV :
The song AdhikAlai subavELai is from the film Natpu, while KAlai kuyilgaLE is from the film "Unnai vAzhthi pAdugiREn . (Interestingly, the second song seems to be inspired by an old S. D. Burman song "O hO hO, khOyA khOyA chAnd", sung by Mohd. Rafi in a Dev Anand movie of the '60s.)
O ! idhukku appuram oru mAlai listum ArambikkalAmE.... in fact, here are some more to the list " mAlai pozhudhin mayakkathilE..., "mAlai ennai vAttudhu..."
By the way, does the song VeLLi kizhamai vidiyum vELai describe the beauty of dawn ? If so, how do the words go ?

1. "Koovina poonkuyil
Koovina kozhi" starts UmaRamanan in a divine manner in the song "Sevvanthi pookalil seidha veedu Ven panju megam nee kolam podu " - interestingly Madhyamavathi raagam for dawn (like "Solai Kuyile Kaalai kadhire") , film MellamPesungal- yet another example of Raaja's masterly usage of flute and violin .
2. Adhikaalai nerame Pudhidhaana raagame - SPB and SJ from "Meendum oru kaadhal kadhai"
3. Vaan meedhile adhi kaalai nera raagam - SJ from Raagangal maaruvadhillai. Whenever I hear songs 2 and 3 , I get a sudden surge of joy( a "jileer" type of Santhosham)
4. Malargalil aadum illamai pudhumaiye - will always remain my most fav morning song as I usually hum this song during my morning stroll, when I see blooming flowers.

OK, here is something different!
So far, it has been all about the sweetness of the dawn.
The majesty of the dawn was boldly proclaimed by MGR with his mannerisms and TMS' golden voice in the following verses from ANBE VAA!! Here it is!
"udhayasooriyanin paarvaiyilE
ulagam vizhiththuk koNda vELaiyilE
imayaththil irukkum kuLir kARRu
yen idhayaththaith thodugiradhu"
The morning sun, and the cool breeze piercing your chest at that time, are all depicted beautifully!

This is about the great song posted in SOTD, ILAMPANI THULIR VIDUM NERAM. This was for the movie Aaradhanai. Radhika was a singer who just sang this song for TFM. She was a student of Ethiraj or SMC (I am not sure on this) and a friend of Suhasini. She won the best singer award of her college. When I was a kid, Suhasini gave a sirappu thenkinnam (Hmm...those were the days) and she mentioned this. Great song no doubt about it.
When there were no forums like this I used to beg each and every Cassette shop owner in Chennai, "Unga kitta Aaradhanai pada cassette irukka" ; Prompt will come the reply "Irukke" and will give me the "Aaradhana" cassete - the Hindi film of Rajesh Kanna. Finally my frustration and pain ended in a remote shop in Nanganallur.I got the song. I told the cassete shop guy just to record this song in a cassete. He was so baffled. "Indha pattaiya? Indha pattai ketkra mudhal aal neenga dhan sir" was his reply. I didnt care. For I recorded this song for a little over 20 bucks.
HoweverI am happy the film bombed. The picturisation of this song is pathetic. The story line is Suman and Sumalatha are lovers. Nizhalgal Ravi is the villain. He is crazy about Sumalatha. So he kills suman and cunningly marries Sumalatha. Suman comes as a ghost to haunt (us and) them. Finally sumalatha also dies and Suman and sumalatha join after death as ghosts.
The song's lead actress is Sumalatha and the picturisation is very very bad.

For the past few days , the song that I break into, during dawn time while preparing coffee is
"ponnil vaanam poothathu" , sung by SJ and composed by IR. I feel this song is based on "Naataikurinji". Any objection?

Arun, try coolgoose, you might get the song. The one song that comes to my mind immediately is "kaalai thendral" sung by susheela and composed by IR. What a song that is.
