This is my question....Udit Narayan, Hariharan, Sadhana Sargam, Kavitha Krishnamurti,Sonu Nigam - All sing in Tamil. But their Tamil is really very bad. Are Tamils deaf, tolerant, or have no PERUMAI in their own language? Is there really a shortage of good, tamil-speaking singers? Or is this really Tamil Inferiority Complex?

Fliflo,
I think she should be in NI list.She is(or was) one of the leading singers in Bollywood. I think ARR usually gives her Sadhana Sargam kind of songs in Tamil.
But Vasundhara Das doesn't belong in both the list.:)

Fliflo,
Let us see where we get to first. Let us see how many really care enough and favor some action against this trend. Then, when we feel collectively that something can be done about it, we can decide what to do and how to do.
You are welcome to make better suggestions that you can think of.

I dont think MDs are going to correct the singers pronunciation anytime soon..Worse, they are making singers who CAN speak tamil fluently sing with a foreign accent..Have you heard Maathangi sing "anjumaniye" from Chocolate? Even AV Ramanan made fun of her when she came as the judge in Sapthaswarangal, until she stunned everyone by rendering a couple of songs with flawless pronunciation.
Goes to show how HJ, Deva, ARR etc. make singers purposely murder Tamil just to make it look fashonable. I dont expect these guys to correct Udit Narayan or anyone.
and this trend of mindless import started only in the 90s after the advent of ARR (ARR fans can bash me for this, I dont mind :-) )

other random thoughts: :-). (1) signed letters to mags/journals/mds: what effect will they have. ZERO . mailing letters once or twice will not help. mailing letters to md-s, singers will not help either because most of them do not spend/have time to read rasikar's comments. a better alternative is to keep bombarding these institutions with signed letter, harsh criticisms, ... until the practise of using inexcusable singers/talents stops. (2) the most effective way is to hit them where it hurts the most. before buying the albums, sample them. if there is even one song which is not acceptable reject the album. do not buy. ciRuthuLi peruveLLam. if thousands of us do this, the effect will start showing up. (3) encourage non-movie albums of high quality. (4) write to journals/magazines about their apathy towards this problem citing instances. this will help in awakening the conscience of these institutions if a large number of people write individual letters (not a form letter or a single letter with thousands of signatures). (5) all these and a few more would be of help in a sane world. in tfm, i am not sure.

There is a song in Friends 'mera di ko gaya' something something. Listen to the way YSR sings the tamil lines. He is a pakka tamiLian, what is the necessity of the foreign accent??Dont blame HJ,DEVA or ARR ..every MD is doing this.

vijay,
IR does it others didn't follow that.ARR does it others follow that.It's not ARR's fault others try to imitate his style.
If you want to get bashed you should do something more.:)

aruL;
I agree totally with your first point.
coming to second point, are you suggesting people to adopt from now. your point seems to be too ideal. if people would have so much bothered Bharathi album would have topped the list. People do not seem to bother about it. In fact, this is the same trend gave a big break to ARR. (Remember Gentleman, Kadhalan. Set of scattered 100 in millions would give a deep thought, adopt it and at a later stage coz of poor response give them up. The process heading on seems to be an irreversible process. Unless, some basic, turbulent changes come it I am not optimistic about it.

aruLaracan,
I agree with (2). That is purely in our hands and that will certainly help. If not buying such cassettes/CDs is going to help, then we'll do it.
Stats,
/* every MD is doing this */
that should not be an excuse to continue the same. What each one of us should do is to condemn the increased usage of foreign accent. 1 or 2 songs once in a while is ok. They should not be too frequent. One good way to measure is to check the last 5 or 10 albums of a MD and see how many songs have this foreign accent, how he has used native instruments/sounds in his songs and see if that is acceptable.

I remember how tamil sangam worked in our institution. Bangalore tamil sangam was started by few important/infamous people called Subramaniam, t. n. k. venkatachalam and a few others. For a function, we advertised and planned to invite one of them (who is now about 80 years old). I remember how many people really bothered to attend, less than only 10% of total tamil population. On an other occasion we invited S.Ve.Sekar, who has essentially did nothing for the growth of tamil attracted a crowd of 90%.
We probably are talking a similar situation here.

Stats, I mentioned a few names as examples thats all..iam NOT denying that YSR or anyone else is not doing it, so get over it :-)
"IR does it others didn't follow that.ARR does it others follow that.It's not ARR's fault others try to imitate his style.
"
Trend, there is a difference here. In the 80s, a few accomplished singers(Lata, Asha etc.) were made to sing a few songs here or there, as against the present trend where almost every album feautures atleast 2 or 3 songs where the pronunciation is horrible..
"It's not ARR's fault others try to imitate his style.
"
I agree. But its HIS fault that he STARTED this trend in the 90s :-)
I cant explain his decision to give songs like "snehidhane", "anbe ithu nijamthaana" (Rhythm)etc. to Saadhana Naragam..when a Swarnalatha or a Chithra could have sung them better, not just pronunciation-wise but even otherwise..

one other calculation you need to have in mind;
how many people visit newtfmpage..about 2000/year. Even if all the 2000 are read this thread, where great ideas seem to be pouring in, and adopt to switch their attitude to buy only what aruL and KS has been suggesting, that is about 2000 cassettes for a movie/year. How many cassettes of ARR is sold/year..about 2 million. 2000/2000000 = 0.1%. Half of them here, surely, aleady do get those songs in mp3 format. then this would contribute to only 0.05%. Even in a very ideal case, this is going to be only 0.05%. In a non-ideal situation this could closely be to zero. Hence, the first move should be to publicise the issue. Then what the content is going to be. Nice going..looking for some turns;))

fliflo: your calculations are wrong (too much of an underestimation). i donot know about newtfmpage.com, but with raajangahm, the number of individuals (not the hits) visiting the site is much much higher than 2000 per month! with newtfmpage's longer history i would expect more individuals visiting this forum. (as an aside, if my calculations are wrong, i will be happy for raja because raajangahm would then have more hits! :-))) ) even if your projections were correct, somewhere there should be a start without regard for the outcome. it is very easy to contact md-s in tn if you are in the u.s. :-). call these people (i REALLY mean it - call them) and tell them (probably their secretary) about what you think of the present situation.
ps: i am quitting now. i am not interested in an endless exchange of words. if something concrete comes up, i will join once again. good luck y'all.
