Of late there had been enough panning on Deva for giving wonderful "remix / xerox" songs. But I feel that he has done a decent job in giving some original compositions too. eg.
(1)Porul thedum bhoomiyil (By chitra in Kalki)
(2)Metti Metti velli metti (By SJ in Pullai kuttikkaran)
(3)Konja Naal Poruthalaiva
(4)Un udhattoram sivappai
I wish TFM fans contribute to this thread without digressing to cast criticizms on him.

rameshb: I also thought that his high pitch in one of the Iniyavale songs was very good. I agree that he shouldn't be doing brikas in higher notes. That Dhaakshaayini was really annoying, while the actual song was quite good.
Hari: I'll take a read of your review. It is true about HH not being versitile for all the songs he's given.

Geetha,
in the same movie 'unnai thaedi', HH has rendered 'pORALE pORALE' without any blunder and the BGM is good in this song. There are couple of songs in the movie 'chinna raja' (in which karthik fools around with roja claiming he is the brother of singer hariharan !) which again could be added to the list of melodies.

rameshb: I too mentioned Chinna Raja in my post. I was a bit disappointed at the Nithyashree song though, but the others were quite good.
I too liked Porale. It was nice.

rameshb: I was hoping that Hariharan would make an appearance in the movie, but, alas, he didn't and Deva did..... Deva's dialogue bits were hilarious, don't you think?

Hari-haran, Even UK cant handle songs of diff kinds. His voice would suit only melody/classical-based numbers. SPB is probalby the only person whos gifted with the talent to sing a complete range.
I liked 2 songs in Kannedirae thondrinaal - kanave kalayadhe and Eswara... some of my friends didnt like Esware becoz of udit's tamil kolai, but i found it nice!
Yes geetha and rameshb, HH shouldnt try brigas in hi-pitch. But HH'svoice is awesome - ghaneer-nu its like a lion's roar!
(rameshb, how did the CT-tamil-program go?)

chandy,
i think UK has handled some peppy numbers really good. I can think of Songs like Meenamma, hai rabba, sonya sonya, bhartiku kannamma ( but SPB version is too good) now. The only problem with him, IMO, his voice is not very consistent in some songs. In high pitches, he is a treat, and his nasal voice can conceal, any obvious mistakes, if at all it exists.

Geetha,
yes, deva's dialogue was funny!
Chandy,
'Easwaraa...' is an enticing upbeat number that would urge you to dance. The song is choreographed well in the movie also! One has to ignore udit's pronounciation if he/she wants to enjoy the song.
The music program in midlletown ,CT was performed by some 'balagangeyan' troupe from NY. The sung mostly songs from 50' and 60's as the male singer's voice matched AM raja. The lead guitarist of the group sung 'poongARRile ' very nicely with an improvisation by singing the lines of 'yeh ajnabi' wherever the the pallavi had to be repeated in the song for a second time. This was in response to somebody from the audience who requested him to sing the hindi version of the song. He denied to sing in hindi but preferred to sing those lines instead and did a nice job. I think the crowd enjoyed it!

"En manathai " from Ananda mazhai is also good.
"anbe anbe" from chinnaraja is o.k
"malavika" & "porale" from unnai thedi are excellent.

hari, IMO hairarabba would have sounded better in SPB's voice (or even HH) than UK. I didnt like UK's voice in thirakaadha kaatukule in ESK too.
Meenamma is a wonderful number, but when I hear that song, I find engayo ennamo oru nerudal. may be UK's voice!!
Are there any sites where I can hear some deva numbers? (esp unnai thedi)
*digression*
rameshb, great to hear about the event.I was initially thinking if the program was by local artist. anyway, i look forward to meeting you at the new england area events.

Chandy: Did I tell you that I managed to catch part of a Hariharan concert in London? He was really excellent, a wonderful performer, and as you say, What a Voice..... I was sitting there stunned. They used the track music and the songs were in Hindi, but they were just wonderful. When he sang Hai Rama, he did a load of improvised brikas and I was drooling.....
Back to Deva, YVS, I too liked a couple of numbers from Anandha Maalai. In fact, he seems to have at least one good number in his new releases.

We are going to see padayappa this week end (1st may) in a theater (cine 1-2-3) near new haven. Also we have a temple kumbhabishekam (with few carnatic concerts, may be) during the memorial day week end. If you don't have any other programs, put this in your list of alternative programs. Email me if you need any more info/help in this regard.

chandy,
Thirakadha kattrukulle is the great example for
inconsistency in UK's voice, which I was mentioning earlier, and I did nt like it either.
But in general I like UK voice, so far, I think, I am the lonely warrior here for his support ( only in films).
I hear people have mixed opinions abt his carnatic performances, Most of my friends consider him very bad.

Rameshb, i'll send u an email for this info :))
Now, its time for discussion on deva songs :))

Guys
continuing on the search for melodies, here is another song from deva which is an excellent melody , 'sempani kAttin kuyilae pEsadi' from the film en uyir neethaanae. Unnikrishnan has rendered with lively expressions as he did in 'kanave kalaiyathe' (without making any effort for adventures!) and harini has done that 'stimulating' voice modulation in the same manner as she did for 'suththi suththi'. The preluding koo koo humming by her and the following flute are amazing and the rhythm and interludes are invigorating.

heve u all seen *vaali*
A1 picture....deva is really at his best here with superb re-recording
congrate.....if he continue to work like this....no doubt he goin to be in the same league as ARR,IR.
- From: bb (@ compq1.crhc.uiuc.edu) on: Sun May 23 01:40:51 EDT 1999
seems deva is building a modern recording theatre in prasad studios, with more facilities than ARR, and kanavE kalaiyaadhE (murali's film) is going to be recorded in it.. looks like deva is going places!
- From: NOV (@ bkj-cache82.jaring.my) on: Sun May 23 22:24:22 EDT 1999
I have to agree with Devarasigan here. I saw Vaali too.
Deva's BGM is excellent!
His music has given a great impact and made this suspense movie, a thriller.
As everyone knows by now, the songs are not original, but the cinematography is something else.

Songs of Vaali (whether copy or not) is good.
(especially, Osona & april mathathil)
Also, The songs, "O, Vennila" & "Sandhiya " are good in "Nanivirukkum varai".

I was reading all the previous postings today.
Kanndasane..Kanndasane.. is from a movie called marikozhunthu.
I like 'yeh hi right choice baby...' from Ahaa. I havent heard any other Deva song with such fast paced beats.

Guys,
listen to this wonderful melody unpaer solla aasai thAn penned by a newcomer lyricist muthukumar, who has written some gentle , amiable love duet without much ado. This has been rendered by none other than the two mega melody singers (in TFM, today) hariharan and sujatha. It is from the new movie minsarak kanna starring vijay ,ramba.

Deva has done a good job by introducing Anuradha Paudwal for the song "poosu manjal poosu manjal".This is my favourite song nowadays.
Also, the songs in Kannodu kanbathellam are good.(Tajmahal..)
Another good number in Minsarakanna is "Ootha ootha oothappu"
"Manase ,manase" song en manathai kollai kondu vittathu.
- From: RR (@ proxy.krdl.org.sg) on: Tue Sep 21 05:21:39 EDT 1999
yvs: most of 'minsara kanna' songs are recycled, e.g. ootha ootha oothaappu, from 'kaatraaga varuvaaya'.
'yeh.. ilaya nilave' (anbulla kaathalukku) is one of his better numbers recently.

Guys
How about " Oru mani adithal unn niyabahgam "
from kallamellam kadhal vazhga
and " Gokulathu kanna kanna " from Gokulathil seethai .
I love these songs Deva but don't know if he had copied these from anywhere
