Song of the Day: Om namaha from Idhayaththai thirudaathE.

- Bhaskar wrote in the Creativity of Ilayaraja thread:
Ennai migavum kavardha IR-udaiya paadal endraal Idayatthai thirudadhe padathil varum Ohm Namaha Song dhaan. It was like a 440 Volts shock when I listened to the song for the first time. It just made me immerse into a different world. I was flying in air when I was seeing the song in the theatre, romba unarchivasapattu vittaen endru ninaikkiraen, Aanandha kanneraal KaN kalangiyadhu. First thing I did coming out of the theatre was buying the cassette.
Veettil vandhavudan ellorukku indha pattai pottu pottu elloraiyum kelungal kelungal endru solli kondu irundhaen, Yen endru puriyavillai, Was I going mad or was I just overwelmed by the tune, I could not understand.
Indha maadiri one does a lot of strange things when they listen to songs created by IR which they like so much and which take them out-of-the-world. I assume that this also might be one of the reason why there are so many "rasigars" and "theevira rasigars" of IR, One just can't explain why ??
Idho andha paadaukkana varigal, Indha varigalai paadalai kettukondae paditheergalaanaal ungalukkum oruvagaiyaana out-of-the-world feeling varum endru ninaikkiraen :)

Oru kaadhal paadalukku vendiya anaitthu creativity-yum indha paadalil kaanalam. Given the least importance to lyrics since this song was remade for tamizh from Telugu, the tune and the music delivers the effect of the Kaadhal fire :)
- Raja's choice of Mano: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/7398.23.43.08.html
- Sung by Mano and S.Janaki. Raagam Hamsanaadham. There is a telugu version of this song, sung by SPB that sounds much better than the Mano version.

With Mano being a big deterrent, I just listened to the Telugu original Geethanjali version instead . Truly a classic!!!

The Tamil version of "Om Namaha" is not a patch on the Telugu original. And I say this even though my mother tongue is Tamil! SPB's liquid gold voice that emotes effortlessly, SJ's voice with the "suspended in air" modulation, combined with Veturi's excellent lyrics make this a timeless classic. Veturi's lyrics also brings in indirect references to the mortality of the protagonists so subtly that you have to be amazed at how apt the lyrics are to the situation as well as to the whole movie. Even though I am a fan of quite a bit of VM's work, I have to say that VM's "translation" takes away from the original. In fact, it is quite pitiable with all the algorithmic stuff in the pallavi and the description of their kiss/love sans the spiritual component of two soulmates coming together, which is very eloquently brought out in Veturi's version. And there are places where the words don't sit all that well in the tune. In fact, this is a recurring theme in all the songs of this movie. Oh well, that's the downside to translating a song into another language.
Here's the Telugu original:

(Never mind the "Narayana"! Obviously somebody was misled by the "Om Namaha" and decided that the following word had to be "Narayana" instead of "nayana"!)

i too will vote for the telugu version. can't understand a word in the telugu version, but the song captivates totally. maybe the SPB-SJ combo gave the special effect.

Om Namaha is by Vaali, not VM.

Babu,
My cassette says VM. Maybe a misprint? Can someone else confirm? The song has a lot of VM-isms though. Regardless, everything I said earlier holds good. And I am a fan of most of Vaali's work too. :)

Mano and Vaali are the rock and the hard place that sandwiched IR's glorious effort in this soundtrack. Mano's gutteral voice was at its nadir here sounding like a car with a broken carburator. And add SJ to this poison, good grief! I can imagine all the street dogs running for cover at this high frequency whistle.

all songs from idhayaththaith thirudaathae are by vaalee !
Infact, I guess the ONLY song with IR - VM - ManiRatghnam combo is from Idhayakovil (Naan paadum maunaraagam) ... Can somebody confirm ?

Song of the Day: maalaip pozhuthin mayakkaththilE from Bhagyalakshmi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/maalai.rm
- One of P.Suseela's best solos. When I was searching in newtfmpage for titbits on this song, I saw that lots of people have mentioned this song in the "Songs that touched us" thread. Yes, indeed. It is difficult to listen to the song and not feel for the situation the heroine is in. Kannadasan's lyrics play a major part in the song. The music is traditional, with shanai used to create the sad mood.
- In the movie, Sowcar Janaki gets married to Gemini Ganesan and is then told that Gemini died in a shipwreck. She later discovers her husband, only to find him in love with her best friend. The diabolical situation demands such a powerful song.
- Lyrics in our PPP page: http://www.newtfmpage.com/ppp/maalai.html
The most striking lines of this song are,
"kanavil vandhavar yaarenak kEttEn, kaNavar endraar thOzhi
kaNavar endraal avar kanavu mudindhadhum pirindhathu En thOzhi".
I like the way Kannadasan brings out a dramatic change in perspective in the last two lines of the song. After going into details of her longing and sadness, he puts it all in perspective when he writes,
"iLamaiyellaam verum kanavu mayam
ithil maRaindhathu sila kaalam
theLivum aRiyaathu mudivum theriyaathu
mayanguthu edhirkaalam
mayanguthu edhirkaalam".
What a way to end the song!
- As this song would show, Kannadasan has raised the level of situational songs to such lofty heights, that it is hard to think of anyone who can better him. Check out interesting discussions on Kannadasan vs Vairamuthu TFM Symposium Topic 9: Kadhaikku Porundhiya Paadalgal (situational songs) here: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/16112.14.25.22.html
- The movie also has another great song, "kaaNa vandhak kaatchi enna veLLi nilavE". We can dissect it some other time.

Music by MSV and not MSV-TKR...right?
IR in a interview mentioned how BIG a fan he was for this song. Who cant be?
What a breath control by PS !! No gasping for air. No straining.
Shud rank as one of the best female solo's ever in TFM. IMHO.
