I am sure as you all know that lately, Rahman's songs have not become what they used to be; mega hits. People have different opinions as to why this is the case... please share your thoughts.

The whole india, and even Indian Directors from US...and UK....are looking for one man to compose music for their project....
Deepa Mehta, Shekar Kapoor, ManiRatnam, Shankar, Ashitosh Gworikar, Subash Ghai...and the list continues...
so many successfull people are seeing something valuable in ARR...
but cheap anti-ARR gangs...couldn't.....as simple as that...
why Aalavandhaan failed?...coz..it was meant for elite's and some broad minded ppl...unfortunately...the world is being ruled by the other-than-mentioned ppl's

Those movies havent even started their production work!! All they did was to announce and the inaugaral pooja! (even that was not performed for a few movies!)

ARR camp maintains, just by music along producers make m,b,t - illions. Why just relase the music and abandon the projects. Selavu micham, and ARR can be saved from this embarassement as all the songs are already ready for all the present, future movies also.

and also...for ur dear info....Uyire was hit even before teh movie released..and for some reason...ppl dun even know who the hero was....got it?....that's what ARR's music can do...
and..in Malaysia....ARR did went beyond cultural borders....his Kathalan songs, we super duper hit, even those Malays, and Chinese noticed thsi song, and they even try to sing it!....now ..that's what ARR's music can do!!!

Talking about showers, i think it was Rajini who needed one in Priya, cycling around singapore with a 'parattai', as if he were in Aminjikarai market ;-))

Oops, the server crunched my post...reposting...
***Whatever: It rarely, if ever, maintains the mood of the song or the scene. ***
Absolutely, thats one of the reasons his preludes/interludes dont sound consistent or thematic. There may be some R&D there w.r.t sounds but how effectively it conveys the mood is the question? Lack of theme naturally means the music WONT dwell in the mind for long, it will be swept away by the winds of change that blow in next. Which is universally acknowledged in case of ARR.
na^20..n sense :)
****Prabhu: what is so special about the following mds that Rahman pales in comparison? ****
His songs being too digital, they dont quite evoke the same 'feel' as most of these MDs. Just listen to SJ's Awaara or Shri 420 made over 50 years ago, what kind of impact it has and how well it jells with the storyline/ethos. Naushad(with whom MSV worked) was alike ARR in composing around 70-80 or less movies in his career. But his works for Sangharsh, Pakeeza, Mughal-e-azam, Ganga Jamna, Mother India are timeless. Guess i neednt say much about RDB, if you really think ARR stands along RDB, I'll have a tough time controlling my laughter ...(its become a fashion here for southies to blast ALL northies right/left/center without even basic knowledge of Bolly music...enough scorn was poured on Kishore..but what a launch he gave Rajesh Khanna in the late 60s! no way the Hariharans and srinivases can emulate that)
RDB was forever criticised for lack of grounding in classical(just like ARR but strung together a score of lingering melodies), always in the shadow of his famous dad SDB(just like KR/YSR but made an impact 100 times more than these 2 put together)...it seems he composed the tune for Rajkapur's Ek din bhi jayega, maati ke mol as a teenager....see the kind of output he gave - Teesri Manzil, Aradhana, Jawani Diwani, Hare rama hare krishna, sholay, aandhi...I am leaving many other gems aside, I think a few of these would sweep the likes of Rangeela, Taal, Dil Se off the shelves!
Has ARR churned out phenomenal musicals like RDB's stunners Yaadon ki baraat, Kum kisise kum nahin for Nasir Husain? No way...add to that he had Rafi, Kishore, Asha, Lata as part of his team...I guess I've said enough and let the obvious truths stand.
As for ur comment on IR, well, he still wasnt ready to take on Bolly at its own game, no wonder he lost out..Ironically, I noticed HMV's edition of his score for Sadma, guess which movie Sadma was paired with on the cassette? Ahem...ahem...it was Utsav, the Shekar Suman-Rekha steamboiler :) I didnt feel very sorry for IR seeing the atrocious combo :)

Here is a scenario:
Mr. Producer and Mr.Director decide on the name for a new movie. Everything else about it is top secret. Mr. Director describes the scenes to ARR, who composes the songs. At this point, the producer and the director decide that they will not go ahead with the shooting of the film - which was not started at all, by the way. And then the they release the song album with all the fanfare. They take a share of the profits and ARR has another hit album. vElaiyum mitcham, selavum mitcham. The profits will add up.
Wait a minute! Is is really necessary to describe the scenes? What relevance does it have to the songs anyway?

============================================
Prabhu,
Between ARR and RDB, I would choose ARR any day. RDB might be a talented composer for sure, but he has been over-rated to no extent. In fact there are people who go gaga over his atrocious singing. In the late 70s and the 80s and even before that, most of RDBs output was utter junk The other part was extraordinary, but a large part of that was sheer junk. Example - the over-rated movie Sholay. RDB was one composer who preferred quantity over quality. IR too preferred quantity, but he almost NEVER sacrificed on quality.
Neither has ARR sacrificed on quality at all. IMO, never.
Also IMO Kishore Kumar is the most over-rated singer as well! When KK sang that horrible song in Half Ticket in a female and male voice, the HFM world showered so much of cloying praise on KK as if to give the whole world an attack of diabetes mellitus. (IMO Kishore's mimicry of the female voice was atrocious to say the least!)
If Hariharan hasn't been able to make a huge impact on the industry, it is his (rather OUR) misfortune. Hariharan's vocal flexibility is superlative and in the area of classical songs, ghazals and devotional songs, hariharan is several leagues ahead of Kishore Kumar, who in fact never ventured out into the area. I have witnessed live on several occasions Hariharan's ability to sing the most complex phrases as if they were a child's play. And the emotional content of his singing is trememdous. He is in my list far ahead of Kishore).

I disagree with you saying IR preferred quantity. If its so, by now he should have composed atleast 3000 movies...Even today there lot of movies he is getting, but not ready to do because of repeated-story and sequences for which he has composed lot of music. He is choosy now, prefer to do art movies and movies with good story line.
