I was recalling many of KVM's songs a few days ago.
Don't you think the KVM-Kannadhasan-PS combination
has produced many wonderful songs?

I did listen to that sweet 'Swathikiranam' song. I think the speciality of the last 30 secs is that Vani approaches the end of the song (theermaanam) and again takes off, probably in a different ragam. Am I right? Please enlighten this layman.
Also, is this song and 'brOvabAramA' (kavarimaan) based on the same raagam?

S.K.
That is true. When Kannadasan did not turn up on time for the composition of a situation song for Saradha, Panchu Arunasalam was requested to compose one. And that was "Manamagale Marumagale Vaa Vaa" Upon completion of the lyrics Kannadasan turned up and expressed satisfaction with the lyrics. He just corrected one line, and that was "Kunamirukkum Kulamirukkum Engal Vasalil"
Will post more later.

sk! That's right! Some of best Suseela songs are by KVM! But I can't recall the lyricists.
A few are here...
1. The all time great 'Unnai KaaNaadha'
2. 'ThookkaNaam Kuruvik koodu' - I've heard that people use to go to this movie just for this song...and it's the last song in the movie!
3. 'Solla cholla inikkudhada' pathi naa sollavE vENdiyathilla!
4. 'MANNAVAN VANDHAANADI'
5. Thillana MoganaambaaL's 'Maraindhirundhu' and 'Nalandhaana'
6. 'Neela ChElai' - Oru devotional movie-la viraga dhaabam olikkum paattu! Menmaiyaana raagam, Konjamum aabaasamillaadha arpudha varigaL and ofcourse, superb singing!
7. 'Kalai MagaL Kai PoruLE' - very expressive song!
8. PinnaaLil vandha 'Poon thEnil Kalandhu' - an amusing melody - indhap paattai kEttaalE enakku (ungaLukkumdhaan) jolly-aa irukkum!
9. 'Poovurangudhu Pozhudhum Urangudhu' - konjam kooda alattal illadha (by which I mean no overdose at all in the rendition!) oru migaiyillaadha sOga geetham!
10. Themmaangu Paattu - 'Chinna Pappa Enga Sella Paappa' - VaNNakKiLi
11. My most favorite of all: 'Sollathaan NinaikkirEn Mudiyavillai' - EngaL Selvi

Digression

Manonmani is the movie where KVM comnposed two songs for T.A. Kalyanam who had to leave to Madras on an urgent matter. But that was not a hit movie. His full involvement was in Anandan in 1947, again not a great hit film. But the first film that was hit based on only songs was Town Bus, and for that reason KVM always mentioned Town Bus as his "first hit film"
The three songs that still remain evergreen:
1. Chittukurvi Chittu Kuruvi Seithi Thriyuma was sung by MS Rajeswary after "terminating" contract with AVM- ie under Sudharsanam. This song continued and still continues to ring in the ears of all old timers.
2. Ponnana Vaazvhu Mannagi Pomo Thuyaram Ithuthaana- Trichy Loganathan, MS Rajeswary and Ratha Jeyalachumy. Miga urukkamana paadal. Also a great hit!
3. Lady Lady Asai Lady Addi Paadalam- by S.C.Krishnan and Seergazhi Govindarajan- a song that portrays conflict between Tamil tradition and and modern culture.
4. Nejam Virumuthey Satha Ninainthu Magizhuthey-Ratha Jayalechumy. Supero Super song!
Bye.

I am reposting this question here. You may know the answer. Was ' ENippadigaL' KVM's last tamil movie?
Another doubt. Wasn't 'solla solla inikkuthadaa' tuned by kunnakkudi?

KVM's last(direct) tamil movie is 'andha rathirikku satchi illai'.
'isaikku oru kovil'(shruthilaiyalu) and 'raaga devathai'(siru vennalla) - dubbed from telugu had music by KVM

Doubter,
Solla Solla is by KVM in Kanthan Karunai. The song "Thirupparam kundrathil nee sirithaal-muruga, Thiruthani Malai meethu ethirolikkum" was sung by Soolamangalam Sisters in stages under Kunnakkudi's music. KVM used it in Kanthan Karunai.

wow! That's news to me Manisekaran! But, that's a very nice song any way - Thirupparm Kundrathil-dhaan solrEn... paada aarambicha paadikkitte irukka maattomaannu irukku!

Karthi:
Thanks for the initial list. But.. as you and I know,
lot more songs qualify to be in the list.
Informatica:
KVM did a few more Tamil movies after
'andha rAththirikku sAtchiyillai'. Some are:
'ChinnanjsirisugaL', 'thoongAdha kaNNendru ondru',
'simma soppanam', 'samayapuraththALE sAtchi',
'mElmaruvaththoor Adhi parAsakthi', 'mahAsakthi
mAriamman', 'pAymarakkappal', 'orE thAi orE kulam',
and, finally, 'muruganE thuNai' in 1990.

Thanks for the trivia. Actually I got confused because I remember kunnakkudi saying in an interview about his song in 'kandhan karuNai'. But he did not mention KVM's name.

Karthi & Doubter:
Here are some more interesting facts about thirupparangkundraththil...
The song was penned by Poovai Senguttuvan
(original name: Murugavel Gandhi).
PoovaiS did not believe in God at some point
and so, certainly he did not want to write any
Bhakthi songs. Kunnakkudi and PoovaiS had a
good friendship. Kunnakkudi needed a Murugan song
for Soolamangalam sisters' stage programme and
'forced' PoovaiS to write such a song. After some
hesitation PoovaiS agreed. He closed his eyes
and the first thing he associated with Murugan
was his visit to Thirupparangkundram with his
parents as a small boy, and his hearing the echoes
of his shouting Muruga Muruga inside the
temple. These recollections led him to pen the
song immediately. It seems Kunnakkudi took very
little time to make a tune for the lyrics and the
whole song was composed within 1 hour.
After Soolamangalam sisters started singing the song
regularly, the song became very popular. PoovaiS's
fame rose because of this song.. this led to his entry
into movies... he started believing in God!
Soolamangalam sisters sang the song as 'iRai vaNakkam'
in a film chamber function. APN heard it there and
decided to include it in 'kandhan karuNai'. The song
was sung by Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi and PS in the
movie.
It seems Kannadhasan (who wrote the other songs in the
movie) was very impressed with the song and told PoovaiS
that the song would have been only poorer if he (K'dhasan) had
written the lyrics.
Here is the real audio file of the song...
http://www.angelfire.com/pa3/ppp/thirupparang.ram
Poovai S then went on to write more songs in TFM. Vaali
introduced him to MSV. PoovaiS wrote thiruppugazhai
pAdap pAda vAy maNakkum and MSV composed the tune for
the movie, Gowri Kalyanam. (This was in late 1966 in the
early days after MSV and TKR broke off.) In terms of the
sweetness factor, I rate this song equal to solla cholla
inikkudhadA. The tune and PS's singing are very sweet..
kEtkak kEtka kAdhu inikkum. Unfortunately I have with me
only a short 30 seconds bit of the song...
http://www.angelfire.com/pa3/ppp/thiruppugazhai.ram
By the way, Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi also sings with PS
in that song. For Gowri Kalyanam, MSV tuned another nice
song, veLLaik kamalaththilE, avaL veetriruppAL, sung
by Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi. This is a Bharathiar song.
Here is the real audio file for it...

Kunnakkudi in an interview describes how well the music & lyrics go together:
thirupparankundrathil nee sirithaal (pause) murugaa <-- so far the song is sung as though murugan is standing next to the singer.
thiruthani malai meethu (elongated) ethirolikkum
<--- here meethu is stretched out to reflect the distance between thirupparankundram and thiruthani.

When we talk about KV Mahadevan, how can we forget the lovely songs by PS in Idhayakamalan.
MalargaL nanaindhana is a real treat.
And can we forget "thol kandEn"?
Yet another movie of his I relish is thiruviLayaadal.

The movie `Pennarasi' starring A.P.Nagarajan and Sooryakala has some nice pieces of music by KVM, but unfortunately most of the songs didn't become hits.
Nethiyiley Neelanirappottu made S.C.Krishnan a famous comedy singer although his previous song `Kalappadam' was a hit.
There were two duets by Trichi Loganathan and M.S.Rajeswari, both were superb songs, but only `Inbam Engum Ingey' was reasonably popular.
`Vendrathu Soozhchi enru ennatheyda' a solo by TMS,who appears in the movie only to sing this song for himself. Half the song was censored, but whole song could be heard in records. Good song, but not a hit unfortunately.

BTB, KVM is from my native place of "Krishnankoil", an agraharam near Nagercoil, T.N.
His father Venkatachalam encouraged him to play Harmonium and sing bhajans in the agraharam's Krishnan temple. Just a piece of info.. I liked to share.
