Mr Murali sankar,
I would like to express my opinion on HH.
HariHaran has done a sorry job in "Meethada Oru Veenai". The Music is really jarring. I was really surprised IR gave a beautiful "reethi Gowla"song to HH to sing. I would have preffered Balu or Unni to HH. His singing really spoilt the whole song. Though the song is a hit??? I still feel the previous "reethi Gowla" by the meastro were classical in terms of redention and tune. I am really upset with the Living Legend IR about the song.
FYI Previous Reethi Gowlia somgs are "Chinna Kannan"By Dr. BM and Thalayai Kuniyum Thamaraiye by Balu and SJ.
HH should sing Ghazals and that's all. He cannot do any justice to film music.

Sorry for mixing up Mahalakshmi and sujatha. But
Sorry Veera, I do not agree that HH had done injustice to that song. I find it hard to accept that he is unfit for film songs. But I am in tune with you on one point: Probabably SPB would have done a better job. Have you noticed, of late IR is not using SPB much.

Murali, have you listened to Dharma? Balu has sung almost al songs. I heard Bharathiraaja has himself told not to take Balu since he is too old for young heros. Anyway "Old order changeth yielding place to the new". I am still and will be a great fan of Balu. Just like Balu took over TMS. But TMS though was a genius himself had a lot of pride that perished him. Still Raaja feels that the only "manly" voice in the industry is by TMS.So I am not opposed aganist HH. I admire him for his ghazals and Colonial Cousins. I felt he could have done a better job in the song Meetadha veenai. That's all was my say. The song was Jarring and too much of Orchestration that overlaps the voice. This is strictly my opinion.
Sorry if in any way if it hurts you personally.
Thanks
Veera Akkoor.

Hi
I dont think it is better to argue who is the best as long as we are enjoying both HH and UK. They have their own style and are different from each other. I enjoy songs of both.
But either of them are comparable to SPB. They can't even reach him. SPB is too good for them. HH is good in ghazals and UK is good in carnatic. But SPB is good in every style of song. I think both HH and UK have their own constraints to be versatile singer like SPB.
Though we cannot compare SPB and TMS both are great. The pity is that HH and UK cant ever reach SPB or TMS.
Thanks

dear Veera,
This response is to remove from your mind any misconception about my getting offended. You had been respectable in your communications and in presenting your views. So do not bother! Cheers!

Dear Vanitha,
I am compelled to tell you that your last statement conveys you are uninformed. Do you know, SPB is regarded higher for his humility rather than his abilities to sing, in the film industry ? He is a modest and respectable singer. He does not, as you have inferred, have an opinion that he is the best among the lot. Please do not release such statements and prevent offending the fans of SPB, who has to his credit a record thirty thousand songs and millions of rasikas. Of course the other two are brilliant but just budding.
Regards

Vanitha,
SPB considering himself to be the best ever ? He maybe IMO but I think SPB is too self-effacing, sometimes to the point of irritating his fans. Is that your personal inference ?
If this living legend's talent has to be understood, start from the 60's , listen to his songs in all languages and then draw your conclusions.

I liked Hariharan until I read the interview with
HH in a magazine. In that he stated that * there was no real fun singing in Raaja's compositions; because Raaja makes his singers to sing upto his expectations. The singers suggestions are not considered *. Yes, that's right. Raaja is THE musician that has confidence in what he is doing.
Mr.HH should remember the fact that he is lucky enough to be considered by the "living legend".
After I read this interview, Though Mr. HH sings well, I kind of don't like hime. I am sorry that I have a mental block. Hey that's my opinion.

Vanitha
Though it was your personal opinion about SPB and we dont have any objection on ones opinion. But let me tell you these two HH and UK can never in their life be a match to SPB.
Also i had never read or heard anybody telling about SPB about his personality. He is the most respected singer through out the world.
when small and upcoming singers HH are passing comments on legends like IR, SPB being one of the best ever singers in India feeling I dont feel any wrong if he is feeling that way. When you know your worth you also defintely feel that way.
I also agree with Sriram and Murali
Thanks and regards

I didn't read this post earlier but I think HH was misquoted by Arul unless he is referring to some other interview that I haven't read. I don't think HH said it was no fun singing for IR. He said in an interview with Screen magazine "I usually improvise while singing, but with Illayaraja there is not much flexibility".

Further to my earlier post, I wonder too whether HH was misquoted by Screen. Knowing how Indian magazines and newspapers have a tendency to misquote and misrepresent ...

psundaram,
then what exactly did he mean by "not much flexibility" . Our "Great" singer struggled for 14 hrs to get a nod from raja for meettAdha oru veeNai (the debutante mahalakshmi performed better than this gentleman in that song).
This "14 hr" was given in India Today.

Probaly Vanitha should be 8-10yrs old, have not heard SPB at all, Spb is the only artist who is respected by all, apart from being a great singer, he is a great person. You will know this if you talk with him for just few mins. He encourges young talents, has no ego.
I dont care if he thinks he is the best, 70%-80% of the population will say he is the best.

I am not sure whether HH actually said anything about IR or not, but, IMHO, IR's songs can be made much better if only he allows the singers to IMPROVISE....LOok at ARR....and look at vidyasagar....they allow the singer some room, and choice to exercise their imagination, and the song comes out well.
The MD should not think that he knows everything, and must also give some respect to the singer's knowledge and experience. That in my opinion will bring better results.
I attended a Live concert by HH here in Singapore during Dec'98, and was stunned to see how well HH improvised on the dull, monotonous "ennai thaalatta varuvalo" (IR music).......and feel that if Ir had allowed HH a free hand on certain things, the song could have been made more listenable.....in contrary to how boring it sounds on cassette.
But, ....i guess i cannot say anything...some people have their own styles of doing things!

S P Balasubramaniam
True,
> The name has turned heads for decades.
> The name has been synonymous with melody.
> The name has made its impact in the minds of music lovers and entertained them.
I liked SPB (and even like him today for a fwew good songs that he has sung) for his great deep resonant voice, and all that, but that was till i heard HH.
HH has a versitality and dynamism in his voice that allows him to COMPLETLELY span 3 FULL OCTAVES without any trouble whatsoever.
His voice has the sweetness, and strength.
His voice has the ability to show emotion( SPB also has this ability ).
and, due to his great classical background, HH has immemnse knowledge, and musical finesse. He can sing the most classical of songs without difficulty.....and at the same time bring life to a very "street" type cheap song too.
May be had SPB learnt Classical music, he might have made a better singer, but definitely, HH is the best that we have TODAY.
Anand
PS:Still amazed at how SPB got the National Award for "Thangathamarai magaley" in minsaara kanavu when the award must have gone to HH for the much more difficult song "Vennilavey" which he rendered to perfection!
