bb- I remember reading that the song 'Soppana vaazhvil' is based on Vijayanagari, with traces of Bhuvagandhari too- is that correct?
Kitcha- as bb said SPB would have been asked the usual questions, and would have answered them so many times-- as an addendum to the question about his experience of making MSV & IR singing in his music (I heard the lyrics are by GA, btw!), what were his experiences in getting KJY and Balamuralikrishna to sing in his music in Sigaram? Did they offer any suggestions?

I think there are 2 songs of IR in Vijayanaagari.
1) Vanna nilave from Padatha theneekkal
2) Kudagu malai kaatril from Karagattakkaran
Please correct me, if I am wrong.

bb,
what is the email address for me to send you SOTD descriptions? I am more versed with telugu songs, so is it ok with TFM lovers if it has just MSV or IR connection in the song?
Thanks

Jag, balaji_cheenu at yahoo.com. for telugu songs, if there is an equivalent thamizh song, i will put that up. otherwise, we can do non-tfm songs once in a while.

Saravanan,
I remember an interview of SPB, wherein he talked about KJY singing SPB's composition in Sigaram ("agaram ippO sigaram Achchu"). SPB said that he himself sang the track for the song. He gave KJY the cassette and told him in his inimitable humble way that he has the utmost respect for KJY's sangItha gnAnam and so "pizhaigaLaip poRuththaruLga". SPB also told KJY that he sang it in a very simple manner. He deferred to KJY's knowledge and requested KJY to correct and/or embellish with gamakams wherever necessary. But KJY heard the song, truly appreciated the composition and refused to change even one note when he sang it. SPB was very, very impressed by his humility and his respect for the "Music Director", even though he is such a mEdhai. (SPB praising somebody's humility is like "vasishtar vAyAla brahmarishi pattam!")

Song of the Day: engE enadhu kavidhai from kaNdukoNdEn kaNdukoNdEn.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/engeenathu.rm
- I like the way Chitra has sung this song, befitting the mood of the song. Vairamuthu has started off the song with beautiful lines:
engE enathu kavidhai
kanavilE ezhudhi madiththak kavidhai
and his sandham in the lines like these are good:
maalai andhigaLil manadhin sandhugaLil
tholaindha mugaththai manam thEdudhE
and of course, there are his trademark phrases like:
viyarvai pooththirukkum un sattai vaasam
adhu ottum inbam manam kEtkudhE
- I like most of the songs in this movie. This will go down as one of the best ARR albums.

bb, somehow this link is not thru for me. I remember "enge enadhu kavidhai" was sung by Sreenivas with Chitra (correct?). Very nice melody.
Other songs in KKKK
Title song 'kkkk" - Hariharan & Mahalakshmi iyer
KaNNamoochi Enada - Chitra (song with a grand classical base). Another version with KJY and KSC too, right?
Konjum MainaakaLe - Sadhana Sargam (whenever I listen to this, I recollect AV RamaNan's katcheri for my younger brother's wedding reception held in Mar-2003; daughter of my elder brother sung this song Konjum mainaakkaLe. AVR signaled twice to keep the mike near her mouth and ultimately she lost the track and gave a pause and forgot the lyrics; but somehow managed to pick-up and completed the song. Sorry for the dig :-)
Suttum Vizhi - Hariharan... Very nice song
Yenna Solla Pogiraai - Shankar Mahadevan... this too !!
As you said, KKKK is one of the classic albums of ARR.

SindhuBhairavi.

'Kudagu Malai Kaatril' I don't think qualifies as Vijayanagari, as it only uses Ma2 as an anyaswara in the charanam. The use of that swara is very scanty. I think a more befitting classification of that song is Misra Sivaranjani.
'Adhikaalai Neram Kanavil' in Naan Sonnathe Sattam may qualify as Vijayanagari. It uses all its swaras in the pallavi. But then again, it's hard to give it a definite raaga label, considering in the pallavi, the prathi madhyamam is only touched on once, and in the charanam, the swara Ni2 is added (giving the song a Hemavathi appearance).

Great selection bb, I was wondering if we were going to have any songs from the last 5-10 years for a while ;-) and you picked one of the best. KK was a winner and this album along with Rhythm are probably the last best works from ARR. After that, there were just few isolated good songs.
Here is Shashi's review from the ARR site:
---------------------------------
Song 7: Yengae enathu kavithai
Excellent prelude by rhythm on thavil/rhythm box, bass & high tinny synth notes combined with Srinivas/chorus voice. Good chord movements leads to the pallavi in which Chitra shines as a majestic SindhuBhairavi is presented in all its grandeur. There is good bass/synth background effects with appropriate use of 'sympathetic strings' (plays the arohanam/avarohanam in a santoor like fashion). The thavil/rhythm/bass continues into the 1st interlude only to be joined by female vocal chorus singing '[(SN3D1P-M1PD1N3)X3, N3R2G3R2G3R2SN3]' swaras or raga 'sarasangi'. The 1st charanam starts of in Sarasangi but touches M2 of the higher octave giving the feel of raga Latangi. But quickly it changes into the notes SN2D1P on its descent coming back to SindhuBhairavi. This charanam is very creatively composed by ARR. The prelude to pallavi and pallavi itself repeats once more before the 2nd interlude. The 2nd interlude is a giant of its own! It surprises with an unexpected use of Nadaswaram playing the notes of Kalyani. Incidentaly Kalyani and Latangi are similar except for D1 which is not shown till the very end of this interlude. Gave me goosebumps when I heard this excellent piece for the 1st time. The 2nd charanam is similar to the 1st but with more imaginative alaps by Srinivas and pauses at its crescendo before the pallavi is repeated. I would also not be complete if I fail to mention the good use of Mridangam in the charanams and the pallavi during its last repetition. The song closes with female voice chorus singing the notes of Kirawani (R2G2M1PD1N3S). Once again a complex composition and Chitra does full justice to the melody line.
Song rating 10/10

Good Song! Of course, as rightly pointed out by Vijay, last good album from ARR.
I am amazed to see the patience and energy people have in dissecting and looking for gems in VM's lyrics. He can't get over his. "mAlai andhikaLil" is a classic VM nonsense.
