Dear bb,
some unbelievable and unforgettable song you are posting. After uLLamellaam thallaaduthe, i was totally blown out by the song, malarO ninaivO. I really feel sorry that i missed so many songs. Where can i see the songs so far discussed?
iLamai naattiya saalai, an excellent song which brings old memories. My friend (he is also a member of this group) and I were searching for this song.
You are doing a great job as srilanka tamizh radio was doing then. Congrats.
the movie name is not mudivillaa aarambam, mudivalla aarambam, i think. Pl confirm.
the movie was acted by Sarathbabu and mounika as second heroine(her first movie). First herione is, may be, radhika. I am not sure. I could recollect only one thing from the movie, sarathbabu was a doctor and maunika was a nurse. I could recollect nothing more than that.
Jeyachandran is one of my favourite singers.

Song of the Day: raasaavE unnai naan from thanikkaattu raja.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/rasaveunnai.rm
- Sung by S.P.Shailaja. Music by Ilayaraja.
- One of the best songs by SPS in TFM, in my opinion. I've been humming this song all day; The humming in the first interlude and the low-pitched start to the charanam takes my breath away. Such is the magic of IR. I remember watching this song in sun TV and being totally disgusted at the picturization. A few people have mentioned that the song is set in chalanaattai; I am not sure.
- Thanikkaattu raja had the famous "sandhanak kaatrE", "mullai arumbE", "koovungaL" and the wild and wacky "naan thaan toppu meedhiyellaam dooppu".
- Another favorite SPS song of mine: pani mazhai vizhum - http://www.dhool.com/sotd2/236.html

bb,
SPS had this tendency to shout and squeak her way through most of her songs. so when she does a fairly decent job- as in this case- it takes your breath away.
Yes today's song is one of her few good efforts. the song is embellished with good humming. But at the end of it all you do get a feeling SJ might have done a better job. this song is right up her alley!
Thanikattu raja sits comfotably in the grey area when IR was still a cog -a vital one- in film making process.
Motherland pictures and isaignani were just around the corner I suppose!

Good one! Lyrics by Vaali. SPS too has mentioned that this is her best song.( I tend to rate 'pala janma janmaandhara bandhangal', 'chinanjiru vayathil' and 'orE mugam nila mugam' higher though)
The filming, as you say, was a big let down.
vengayam, unga fav. Sripriya-vai mention paNNama vittadhu yEno?
Thanikaattu Raja (1982/ Suresh Pruductions) was produced by D.Rama Naidu and directed by V.C.Guganathan.
Interestingly, the same year Kamal too had a Sripriya-Sridevi starrer- vaazhvE Maayam.

I have not seen this movie which is supposed to be a 'dabba' and whenever I hear this song , the scene that unfolds to my mind's eye is
a damsel singing this song during a twilight evening at the 'kenathadi', drawing water amidst lush green ambience , when a lamp being just lit at a distant temple on the top of a hillock, longing for her dream(non existent) prince .
bb, can't u make out shivaranjini (may not be a pure one , though)at the instant tinge of pathos in the pallavi line "hey poo vachhen pottum vachhen vaazha thaan" ?
Those with good audio, don't miss the terrific bass through out the song. The santhoor like sound just before the start of the second charanam "maa kolam pottu" takes me to a different world. Why should the curse of age befall people like IR?

This is one of the few songs that has the unique style of Ilayaraja stamped all over it. The handling of the bass guitar, particularly, is an experience for any guitarist. I can't hear the song at work, but when I think of this song, the humming before the first (or second) charanam and its gliding into a short guitar piece (with the breath-taking bass taking almost the role a lead guitar) immediately comes to my mind. That the song could make tolerable a singer like S.P.Shailaja is by itself a measure of the greatness to it.

After the unusual tune of "Maman machan"from MurattukaLai SPS comes again to spoil yet another good tune. What a great humming and arrangement! But when SPS sings "nee kidaikka nenthukittEn" all I could visualize from the voice is an expectation of a "Bali aadu".
SPB and SPS remind of you of the eternal "brothers of Hindi cinema"- one becoming a criminal and another invariably becoming a "Police Officer".For one "chinnan chiru vayathil"SPS had to be tolerated for almost 5-6 years.

tamil comedy drama afficionados: the "thananam.." portion in the first interlude is played in one of S.Ve.Shekhar's dramas (or is it crazy mohan?). can't recollect which.

I used to consider this song as an `improved version' of "mAmEn machAn" those days:-)
ShailajA had a unique voice / style of singing - usually remind you of `kuRumbukkAra-innocent-sister'...the sisterly feeling may be because she was sis of SPB:-) She definitely had a signature, identifiable voice / singing (which is lacking in many singers of today...how many of these can be identified by their name when we hear a song?)
`rAsAvE' had IR in full form...kind of lesson in guitar...excellent percussion arrangement too (my first pick in thanikkAttu rAjA, though, is `sandhanakkAtRE', especially for the unique ending of each saraNam...SPB & SJ izhaiyum andha tha'nAna'nAna'nAna'nAna-nAna'nAna'nAna'nAna...)
These songs make me feel nostalgic...reminding of the college days...hmmm...

'Raasaave Unnai Naan' is a fabulous song , expressing pathos. Everything about it is just really beautiful: the chorus, the harp (?) prelude, the guitar (2nd interlude), and even SPS's voice, the 'Misra Sudhasaveri' raagam (because of the Da1) in the pallavi and the Hamsavinodhini raagam in the charanam.
'Koovungal Seyvalgale' I also really like from the movie. Hearing the song, I could envision Rajini on a bike riding through the city of Singapore. 'Santhana Kaatre' has really far-out interludes and must've been the biggest hit in the movie.

Contrary to many here, for me , my most favourite song in Thanikaattu Raja is "naan thaanda ippo devadas" for the freaky beats, and SPB's cynical, "care a damn" way of singing. Well, SPS had a unique girl-woman voice and she had never sung offkey in any song. She had a sharp, shrill voice and my only grouse is she could have added more mellowness in her voice. OISG, infact that "nendhukitten" gamakam is something I liked in this song. "poonthottam" - nadhiyai thedi vandha kadal, "solai kuyile" - ponnu oorukku pudhusu, "ori kili urugudhu" - anandha kummi are few unforgettable songs from SPS-IR combination
