Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)

Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."

Naaz/AVR, Of all the songs you have asked I only have "Paadum Vande". I will bring it to you in a few days. But I have offered other rare songs. Hope you like those.
s0, it was a stay-home weekend.
Everyone, added some rare songs to MoreTamil and TamilSolos. Happy Listening!

Neel D,
Thanks a lot for the 'Rajave' number from Marumagal. Also I haven't listened to the 'Naveena Silappadhigaram' number for ages! MSV had two of his favourites LRE and VJ sing together for the first (and only?) time, and he couldn't resist joining them perhaps!!

Neel D,
How about the Vasanthathil oru Naal" duet with SPB " Vendum Vendum Undhan Uravu" . It is a song of a byegone era where love had space, time & feeling. The song has been sung superbly by both.
I think this film was a remake of Mausam. It bombed big time. But as usual MSV came up trumps with this number.

More songs...more listening...wanting more! Keep the tunes rolling! Your webpage has a surprise every other day! How magical!
Paadum Vande would be good if you and upload the song. It is one of my favourite VB-VJ tunes. In fact, Kalangalil Aval Vasantham had a host of good solos by VJ. You know what would be an absolute musical coup for your webstie: Muthu Muthu Thaerottam from Aaniver.
I have not heard that song in nearly 15 years, and have spent many hours on the net doing searches for a link to this particular melody. No luck.
Can you change the stars and do something... :-)
Vengayam - Welcome again!

Neel
I heard the two new songs in the telugu section. "Vidhi Chaeyu" was/is one of my all time favorite numbers of VJ/MSV. What a lovely song with such good lyrics! I always thought of this song as one composed exclusively for VJ to sing. After listening to this after a while now, I started to day-dream VJ singing another telugu song with either MSV or IR. May be too much to ask these days.
Regarding the other song- I have never heard/read of either the movie or the song before anywhere (radio, TV or magazines). One of those rare songs, hmm. The song was interesting, seemed like a dance competition between two dancers, one of which has PS for playback and the other VJ. It felt like PS and VJ were actually challenging each other in the song - like "neeyaa naanaa" - especially towards the end when they join together at those high pitches. I wonder who the composer of this song is?
Anyway, thanks Neel for the good work. I hope and pray that one fine day, your site become THE site for accessing VJ's songs, both popular and rare numbers. As Naaz says, wanting more and more and more........

What's it about a song like Ezhu Swarangalukkul (just heard Neel's fine transfer,) that it always astounds in every sense? When people talk of "Carnatic" style songs in films, this has got to be THE defining song - on how such songs ought to be sung.
Not one current "younger" singer* can match VJs clarity, expression, ease and brilliance in that song. An absolute revelation every time one listens to it.
(*Sorry, but the recently hyped debut of Sudha R in IVAN, also does not have the magic of Ezhu S.)

Naaz,
In my opinion "Ezu swarangalukkul" is the Best Tamil Song of 20th century. In all aspects - singing, composing and lyrical content.
Most good singers touch the heart of the listeners, which is great. But VJ is one singer who touches the heart and the brain of the listener. She connects with the listener emotionally as well as intellectually. The context and the lyrical content stand out just as well as the feeling of the song, not to mention the technical perfection and diction.
Kaumudi,
The less you know about "Ramakrishnulu" the better :-)

I fully concur. Although, we both could be dismissed as besotted VJ maniacs :-) Who cares? :-)
And you are right in that VJ is perhaps one singer who plucks the heart's strings and simultaneously makes you marvel at how miraculous the human voice is - the ultimate musical instrument!
A singer's singer in every sense of the phrase.
One small doubt: Most posters here use the word "diction" in a way that is unfamiliar to me, and I am trying to work out what they are highlighting...
In my understanding of the word DICTION means "choice of words" - hence the DICTIONARY. To say that someone has a great gift for diction is to say that they have an extensive and appealing "vocabulary" and are able to use better words to articulate/express their thought (an arrangements of "words".)
The confusion (for me) arises when I take this meaning to its natural conclusion: Are the words in the song by VJ? They are not. Hence, how can we commend her for her "diction."?
Technically Pronunciation, Enunciation (stress/meter) and articulation are all within the singer's domain. Diction (unless I have got the meaning of the word all wrong) has nothing to do with the singer. It belongs entirely to the lyricist/poet.
I would be glad to hear how others feel about this particular usage of "diction." Am I right in concluding that the way it is employed here fits the definition of "malapropism"?
- From: Neel D (@ 24.98.42.169)
on: Mon Jul 15 23:20:20 EDT 2002
Naaz,
You are correct. "diction" is all about speaking but I (mis)used it to describe enunciation (while singing).
What on earth is "malapropism"? You and your ten dollar words Naaz :-)
Everyone,
More of soothing love songs in VJ-KJY combination. Tamil Duets 3 Page 2.

Ten Dollar -thana? Well, at least that's more than the current share value of worldcom! :-)
Malapropism basically is the misuse of word(s). Thinking (in one's unchecked understanding) to mean one thing, when their usage/meaning is something else.
To localise a small line in tamizh with english usages:
"Romba panakkararum vaendam, romba thazhvavum vaendam, mediocr-ra iruntha podhum."
Mediocre is used, when the one that should really
be there is Middle or even Medium. Mediocre is something else entirely.
Now get that cheque in the mail! :-)
(Will check the new additions tonight.)

People here seem to forget Chitra,Kavita and their mastery over singing classical songs.
( I assume they belong to the younger group of singers....of course, it all depends on what YOUNGER really means. If it means the absolutely new ones, then I havent heard enough of them and I cant comment)
(Kavitha of course for the ones based on Hindustani).
Vani sure had her Ezhu Swarangalukkul and Aanathineeyara and Brocheva..... and they are permanently in my list of favourites despite language barrier. Chitra has her own Madhuram Gaayathi and Paadariyen and Gopika Vasantham and Alaipayuthey and several others too.
I also find nothing amiss in Sudha Raghunathan's renderings at all. From the point of view of playback, they might not be astounding (but that might be the picturization at fault...or the Sudha's voice not suting the actress's ) but the singing as such is perfect. IMO of course :-)

Neel D,
Thanks for the Rasathirosapoove surprise! I know I have talked about it in the past.
Vanam Sevvam seems familiar but I can't recall any specific details regarding the film or the MD. Saravanan'ai Koopidungal ! :-)
Thendralil Aadum is Class all over. Did VJ have any songs in Indru Pol Yendrum Vazhga?
Can't wait for Thangaththil Mugameduthu...You just raised the expectations bar are a touch higher.
(Although, we'll gladly accept a breather - as long as you don't make it too long :-)

Naaz,
Azhaithaal varuven. Kettaal tharuven!
Vaanam Sevvanam is from Kulir kaala megangal(1986).
A 'mediocre'(!) film, directed by the veteran Sridhar, who had just given the super hit "Thendrale Ennai Thodu" and the flop "Unnai thedi varuven" the previous year. (UTV had "Maalai mudhal kaalai" by VJ).
It was a sad comedown for Sridhar to make a mundane masala like Kulir kaala megangal. It starred the then upcoming "Action King" Arjun and Sadhana. It was a promotion for Sadhana, who had earlier appeared in supporting roles in Sridhar's Naanum oru thozhilaali and UTV.
Music was by SG- the only film of Sridhar's to have music by SG.
Besides 'Vaanam Sevvanam", a song which lingers in memory is 'Ilaigal meedhum malargal meedhum pani vizhum kaalam'- lovely duet by SPB-VJ.
Naaz, I too like Raasathi rosapoove a lot. A very different song by MSV with a catchy beat. Sadly it was overshadowed by VJ's Naan Paadi konde iruppen. Raasathi rosapoove, picturised on Pandian and Ilavarasi (both unnecessary additions to the story), was the first film song by lyricist Piraisoodan, who went on to write songs like 'Meenamma Meenamma'(Rajathi Raja) and Solai pasunkiliye(En Rasavin manasile).
Yes, VJ had 2 songs in 'Indru pol endrum vaazhaga'-
a duet with SPB- En Yoga jaathagam, and 'Pudhumai pengaladi'-VJ & chorus.
Kalyana Sorgangal, if I remember right, is from 'Ninaivil oru malar', which doesn't seem to have been released. Music by Vijayaramani, who seems to be none other than TS Ragavender. TSR, you may remember played the judge in Sindhu Bhairavi, and Revathi's father in Vaidehi Kaathirundhaal.
Neel D, you may tire of getting my thanks, but thank you again!
