Two more songs Subbu..
1. Arumugane shanmuga ( a virutham), a wonderful song and she goes into high pitches with ease and it so clear and sweet.
2. one more song for JJ starts with " velli malai, ...malai, engal malai amme " ( I am not mentioning velli malai mannava ). this is a typical "kurathi" song ...

"Naanatchi Cheithu varum meenakshi madurayile" is another semi-classic of PS. Can someone get the other details ?

"Naanatchi..." is from teh film "Adhi Parashakthi".
Director: KS Gopalakrishnan.
Music: K V Mahadevan
Actress: Padmini (showing different Roopams of Parashakthi to Major Sunderrajan).
This film was great hit in early 70's.
Major, an British, redicules the Goddess and her different names and roopams; gets punished; and on realisation, he apologises. In that situation, Padmini enters into that temple as a "GrAmiya PeN"; sings and dances with Vepillai. Song is 'Aayee mahamayee adi mandhira sodhariye...' (by PS).
Major gets cured after the song and asks Padmini "who are you? how you cured me?"... She laughs and says "you asked a question 'ethana pombaLa saminga indha oorla..'... ippa paaru".. Then immediately "Naanatchi.." starts. Two different songs with a bit of dialogue in between. At the end of the song, Padmini takes the roopam of "Karumari Amman"... a great make-up full of black make-up..
Film was good.... actors/actresses enjoyed acting... Songs and music were great... of course adivine treat.

Kalai and Subbu,
A few more details on Aadhi Parasakthi!
Major's name is Peter (In folklore, he is known as Peter pandian!). He and his wife are saved from their house by a girl (Amman herself!)who takes them out before it collapses in rain! He keeps teasing all rituals as 'ennappaa vEndoothalai!!' He insists on the pujari wiping off the sweat from the face of the Samayapuram Mariyamman idol! As the pujari (V Gopi) starts wiping it from each side of the face of the idol, Major gets chicken pox on his face in steps and loses his eyesight! He kneels down and cries for mercy on which Parasakthi appears as mentioned by Subbu!

Kalai:
About 'dhEviyar iruvar muruganukku'..
It is from the movie 'kalaikkOyil'. (unga temple!)
Music by VR and veeNai by Chittibabu. The movie
is about a veeNai vidhwan's family. The background
of the song is as follows. Muthuraman (a famous
veeNai vidhwan) and Chandrakantha are happily
married. Rajashree, a dancer, has an eye for
Muthuraman. She invites the couple for a function
at her home. At the function, from Rajashree's
behaviour, Chandrakantha senses her 'eye' for Muthuraman.
At this point Rajashree requests Muthuraman to play
veeNa, while he insists that he will play only
if she sings&dances. Muthuraman starts on the veeNa
and Rajashree comes out in a beautiful dress and
starts singing the song; lyrics entirely pointing
to Chandrakantha about her interest in Muthuraman!
Chandrakantha feels uneasy all through the song..
picturization as usually done very well by Sridhar!
There is a special PS humming at the beginning of
the song which is only there in the movie version.

Thanks SK. Same movie I remember another classical based song "ThangaRatham vanthathu veethiyile" with BMK. great one. Is it a hit movie ?
Another sridhar's movie "policekaran magal" with great songs and most of them are by SJ. One of my friend told that " all the songs were sung by PS in tel." I hope Kaumudi can help us to get the correct info.

Yes, indeed all the songs in the telugu version of PM were sung by PS. The movie is called "Constable koothuru". One song that comes to my mind immediately is the duet by Ghantasala and PS is "Poovuvalae virabooyavalae". Beautiful duet. It is very slow and starts off in mandhra sthaayi and goes to the thara sthaayi. This song is sung by SJ and PBS in thamizh, I think. I can't remember what other songs constable koothuru had. Will let you know when I come across some.

I was listening to a lesser known telugu number of Smt. Susheela from the telugu movie "Missamma" (1955) titled "Balanura Madana". It was her early years as a play back artiste when S Varalakshmi, P Bhanumathi, Ravvu Balasaraswathi, Sarala, TG Kamaladevi, P Leela, Jikki were at the peak of their respective careers.
A great classical piece composed by S Rajeshwar Rao. Originally thought PS disguised her voice. Sounded like T R Rajakumari from the movie "Chandralekha" (1948) singing "Manamohana Saranae", under the same composer (in hindi was rendered by Uma Devi, Lyrics by Pt. Indra who was responsible for of the hit movie "Murti" sung by the great soprano Kursheed and composed by Bulo C Rani). The song itself was very romantic as the french would call it.
Remember Felix Mendelsohn's "Songs without Words". What cannot be said in words can be said in music. The songs is pure lyric poetry, tender confessions and emotions expressed in music. The song in itself was a like a soul in the highest form of meditation. It was like listening to Jules Massenet.
I should admit not every singer is as eloquent as PS. But she is an exception. Music begins where language falls silent. But thats not the case here. Her intoxicatingly beautiful voice fills that void and by the stupendous virtuosity the song flows smoothly from her like a balletic bowing.
Its like listening to Paganini or Brahms after a long day at work. It is the real miracle of PS's art of rendering songs and it is the foundation of the musical romance. The mentioned song bears witness to this miracle.
It looked like a debut not before any audience, but sounded like Anne Sophie Mutter making her debut before a Salzburg Festival audience (as most of the southies are carnatic music critics) in her early playback career.
Yet her musical breath is already fully under control and her changing tonalities perfectly concentrated. In every demanding performances, PS demonstrates that she can do everything else expected of a great legendary mezzo-soprano.
Nothing intervenes between our ears and the fragile, vulnerable side of her singing style. That is music-making.

KalaikkOyil was a failure movie inspite of the great songs.
(MSV was one of the producers.)
Kaumudi:
The Ghantasala-PS duet 'Poovuvalae virabooyavalae'
you are referring to is probably the telegu version
of 'ponnenbEn poovenbEn' in thamizh.

Anyone knows who acts in the song "Oorayiram Nadagam Aadinal" from the movie Sumathi En Sundari. P.Suseela vocal is too good in this. Even at high pitch she didn't lose any octaves. I wonder if anybody could have sung this song with such ease and grace. Hats off to MSV for such a wonderful tune.

Vicky..
"" It was like listening to Jules Massenet. "" I am not verymuch exposed to western singers. Can you somemore details about her and how you feel PS is inferior to her. Just for awareness.
Kaumudi!
Thanks for the info. "Constable koothuru" is the movie which i have mentioned. Is it possible to know about the coverage of swaras ( from manthra sthayi to thaarasthayi). I mean upto which swara she is touching in mantrasthayi and like tharasthayi. Any link ?
