A JOURNEY WITH K.V. MAHADEVAN

This is an effort, in a modest way, to trace the great contributions of KVM to the Tamil Film Music. As Tamil Film songs originate from the Tamil films, I am aslo taking the liberty of discussing the background of the films where KVM had comsposed- with the intention of adding spice. I believe this article would serve as a nostalgic tonic to the fans of old songs.

  VIETNAM VEEDU (1970)
  A very good movie based on a stage drama. Sivaji acts as Prestive Padmanaban. Padmini, Srikanth, Ramapraba and Nagesh are the main stars. There are some excellent songs. This movie was selected by the Tamilnadu Government as the best film for 1971.
  
  TMS sings this song written by Kannadasan with the first two lines lifted from Mahakavi Bharathiyar.

  KULAMAA GUNAMAA (1971)
  A film where Sivaji, Jaishankar, Padmini and Vanishree appear in main roles. This is another film where Vanishree totally outshone Padmini in her acting talent. At least two good songs:

  VASANTHA MAALIGAI (1972)
  This film became the talk of Tamilnadu as soon as it was relased, for a number of reasons- songs, Sivaji and Vanishree arre the three pluse poitns. Vanishree matched Sivaji to a large extent. This film brought great fame to everyone involved in its production. K. Balaji, Sunderarajan, BandariBai, CID Sakunthala and Santhakumari are among the main stars. All songs were by Kannadasan. This film was a silver jubilee hit in Tamilnadu and ran for 41 weeks in Sri Lanka. I red that in the Sri Lankan screening, Sivaji Ganesan never dies in the end.

  Background to this song:
  KVM told me this is one of his all time favourites. This is the only film that Kannadasan wrote after drinking a little bit of whisky. This song was written thinking of his childhood love. After writing the song he went and loaded more. Even though he was slightly drunk, just look at the ability of his pen and mind to produce what has been termed as one of his masterpieces. Perhaps that was why Soundra Kailasam wrote:
  
  “Thalladum Bothayilum Kavi Paadum Methai Ivan”
  
  There is a widely held view that Kannadasan used to write after drinking. That is a total lie according to Kannadasan. No one discovered Kanndasan’s drinking habbit. That was an open statement that Kannadasan himself made in his books and speeches. But a political party that had an axe to grind blew the matter into gigantic proportion and mole into a mountain, just to discredit him. The matter of fact is that Kannadasan wrote in the mornings and he used to drink in the evenings, manily at Alwarpet Kavitha Hotel. At first Kannadasan kept quiet. When he started to write “Vanavasam” “Manavasam” and “Poi Varugiren” the propaganda died down. But the damage was already done in the common man’s mind. I am saying all these because we must be fair in our judgement, even if it involves a person whom we may bitterly hate.

  MSV had used a lot of group chorus voices in his songs such as Engey Nimmathi, Satti Suttathadaa, etc. But KVM Sedlom used this. This song is an exception for KVM where he has used the chorus voices in the background. It is there in the film soundtrack, but not in the vinyl record.
  
  
  Then comes the famous song where TMS mimics the voice of Sivaji and starts singing:

  Vasantha Maaligai was a silver Jubilee hit in 1972. It was remade into Prem Nagar acted by Rajesh Khanna (Paruppu Sambar of the North and Hema Malini-Paruppu Sambaaree of the North) Nothing like our Simma Kuralon with his fantastic performance.
  
  ENGAL THANGA RAJA (1973)
  
  Sivaji Ganesan acts with Manjula and Sowkar Janaki in main roles.
  
  The songs are good in this movie which was another hit for KVM.

  Great lyrics, great tune, great singing, great
  direction and great acting! All through the song
  KVM has used veeNa as if it responds with agreement to the
  lines that TMS sings. The movie version of the song
  has a special veeNa interlude which is not available
