I listened to VandeMatharam in which ARR recycled his own tunes from Kizhakku Ceemayile and a touch of a song from Indira.
Also ARR's recent movies for big time producers like Ratchagan and Iruvar (except one song) and Dhoud in Hindi did not have any notable music. Remember ARRs last hit Minsarak Kanavu music was done long time ago.
If for a major album for Sony released on 50th year of Indian Independence, ARR cannot produce original music, then I have to come to the conclusion that he is running out of stuff. I heard that ARR is planning to cut down on movies and concentrate more on albums. Thus he will have to produce less and earn more.
Right now I do not see any difference in the quality of music produced by ARR and Karthik Raja. In fact I think Deva is doing a better job of providing consistant good quality music.

Hi Udhaya,
To me Alagumalar Ada resembles Kallilaekalai vanam
song (May be both follow the same rhythm)
Kuchi kuchi rakkamma resembles "Kokkara koo savalae Ninijirrukum" a sivaji movie song a late
50's song.(at least first few lines)

RJAY : I have read your aricles, and I have something to say.
I agree that Carnatic music has complicated rythm patterns. You said that western songs have only 4/4,or 8 beat songs. That means that you have listening to only typical western rock/pop. If you turn your attention to jazz/rock or jazz-pop, you'd be left with your fngers entangled trying to guess the beat. If you want examples, I don't want to list them here. But of the most popular one's is 'Money' by PinkFloyd.. which is a 7 beat song, though it is rock.
Secondly, if the song from "punnagai mannan" is familiar, thats only because is in the standard 7th scale with swing. But it spells nothing but originality. You can't compare this with lifting sound effects from eclectic pop sources and doing a cut and paste job that ARR often does. Ofcourse some credit has to be given for ARR's originaliy in other songs ( very few).

Kitty,
Thanks for reminding me that Jazz has polyrythms and compound and complex rhythms.
Not to mention Bebop which is ultimate in rhythmic exploration.
I should have mentioned these here, sorry for
limiting myself to the western music genres commonly heard here.
Thanks again for pointing out my mistake.
I agree with your observation on Raja. I too
feel his intrepretation of the same pieces is
much better.

ARR does nothing more than sampling commercial sounds from some not-so popular places, and outright stealing sounds from ultra populare groups like Enigma. The fact that the listening audiences would not be even remotely aware of such sources only adds to his immense popularity.
Shame on ARR for doing that.

I saw a new hindi film trailer - a movie by priyadarshan with Jackie S and Pooja Bhat with music by ARR - is this based on a south indian film and is the music new by ARR like Rangeela ? Has anyone heard the music and how is it?

Raja M: I guess you're talking about Kabhie Na Kabhie (did it also have Anil Kapoor in it?). It came in Tamil as Monalisa, but was released as a audio only in Tamil.
ARR did the songs in Hindi only, like Rangeela, but has re-vamped Anjali Anjali(Duet) as a duet, with Kumar Sanu in KNK. This wasn't included in the Tamil version. It has the popular Veesum Thendral Kaatrinile sung with Unni K.

whether ARR does quality recording or introduces new singers or composes patriotic albums, i do not care.as a music lover i care only about melody and that has been a rare feature in most of ARR's songs. His songs in jeans are more of the same kind
with perhaps 'kannodu' being an exception.as long as the audience accepts him he would be there.
But he never had the ability to bring out the 'mann vaasanai' or the 'tamil flavour' in his songs with his pseudo-western style and his music would die fast.

Well Put Vijay!. I don't care as long as he gives out good original songs.. but he seems to be doing the same araitha maavau.. that's what is killing me.. But no point in blaming him . TFM audience
seem to relish this crap .. so he is all the more into it.. thats' all.

Prasad: Please take a look at

It has lots of graphics and is a bit slow, but has a fairly full discography....Satish's site is more complete though, as he's gone into full detail of all the songs and films....

I agree that ARR's stuff SEEMS TO be going down (this cannot be said conclusively - maybe if he gets inspired, he can come up with sthing, he is undoubtedly talented, otherwise he could never have dethroned IR). The main reason why I feel this is the fact that his quality even for Mani Ratnam and other big budget producers and directors is less compared to waht it used to be although even now, he is far better than Deva and others. IR also has come up with a decent amount of trash but when it came to major movies he always did full justice; if you look at the Mani-IR combination, every movie had revolutionary music. That is the main reason why I feel ARR maybe lacks inspiration nowadays.

ARR's audience is now seeing through his con music. While I liked his daring efforts to sound
different (in my opinion, his music is totally indifferent to any reasonable expectations), the time has come for him to accept that because of the big void in Indian film music scene, his music
is only bringing the void closer to a black hole.
