C V' you're right: Erich Seagal's Love Story was the original. Oliver and Jenny became Arun and Lily Fernandes for our Indian adaptataion!
A tragic love story, but the first half, with its fun-filled college sequences made delightful viewing.
It was Rajshri's productions' Tarachand Barjatya who made the Hindi version 'Ankhiyon ke Jharokon Se', directed by Hiren Nag. Sachin & Ranjita Kaur played the lead pair. And Ravindra Jain had come up with a winning score. Btw, I think it was Hemlata who sang the title song. Another favorite is 'Kai din se mujhe'- Shailendra Singh & Hemlata.
In Malayalam, R.M.S. Pictures' Madhanolsavam- 1977, stg. Kamal & Zarina Wahab, was produced by Rama. Subbiah and directed by N.Shankaran Nair.
The film was a great success, and one of the main factors was Salil Chowdhry's songs.
The Tamil dubbed version 'Paruvamazhai' didn't do so well, perhaps because the Malayalam original had already been released in Tamil Nadu as well.
But the songs (Lyrics: Kannadasan) became immensely popular and were often heard on radio, especially KJY's 'Kaala magal medai nadagam' and SJ's 'Then malar kannigal'- both lovely songs.
'Kaala magal medai nadagam' is heard when Zarina is diognised with Leukemia, and Kamal and Zarina go rowing in a boat.

"Udhaya kaalame" has eluded me for so many years and how did bb manage to get it!!!"Maargazhi maadham mun pani velaiyile" is an amazing semi classical composition in Khamaas , with a strong undercurrent of sensuality
Madhanotsavam " Sandhe", the Mal original of "angE sengathiR saaynjaal" , a heavenly rendition by SJ is one melody that never fails to moist my eyes even today.Salil's melodies have a very feathery feel to them.

BB,
Thanks for a great song. I couldn't help slipping into a reverie as I was hearing the song. I am not going to hear it again at work for the fear of being mistaken to be sleeping at work :) Salil Choudhury always had that magic for me.
‘mAdapurAve vA’ is another great song from this movie that stays forever in your memory (I found it from the Malayalam version of this movie from the link you made a note of; thanks for that too). It used to feature in AIR and Tamilsevai frequently too.
Sitting in an entirely different cultural ambience and environment of a working place in the US, it is a great feeling to be transported for a few moments to the days of Radios and transistors, when such songs struck you unconsciously even in that early age. It is only when one listens to them at a later time, as I do now, one feels the impact that they have had on one’s life.
This thread with many of its songs and discussions are addictive pal. Should I thank you or curse you for that? :)

Saravanan,
Are 'Iravum Pagalum' and the movie which features 'uLLathin kadhavugaL...' Jeyshankar starrers?

Da Vinci, 'Ullathin Kathavugal' is from Iravum Pagalum-1965. It was Jaishankar's first film.
Yes, 'Madaprave vaa' is a another lilting song, with its typical Salil interludes. 'ange sankathir saaindhaan ange' (SJ) is a melancholic, melodious song. Paruvamazhai is indeed a wonderful album.
btw, you can look at Madanolsavam's poster here:

I heard 'Madhanotsavam' at MIO a while back. It's a splendid album. But I wonder why the best song IMO 'Mele Poo Mele' didn't make it to Tamil.

Saravanan,
Thank You.
I made a guess that both songs could be from Jeyshankar's films and I find that it is true. I think TMS must have tried a different tone to suit Jeyshankar's voice (you could see a marked difference in his songs for Shivaji and MGR) and that could be the reason I found him sounding different in those two songs.
Do you know of any other songs by TMS in Jeyshankar's films?

Song of the Day: Oh little flower from neela vaanam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/olittle.rm
- Sung by TMS. Sort of a goofy light hearted song to start off the week. Music by M.S.Viswanathan, Lyrics by Kannadasan, I believe.
- The song is set to a nice rock and roll beat. TMS sings this in a stylish fashion. When I heard this song for the first time, I actually couldn't bear to hear it. Since then, I've sort of come to like this song (and another goofy number by SPB, On a hot summer morning). I believe this film was a Sivaji starrer. Can someone post the situation of the song? If it were to be a duet, I am sure L.R.Eswari would have been made use of too.

Ah-- good one! I love the place where he goes 'Orey tharam--orey tharam--uravaada vaa--vilaiyaada vaa', and the guitar that responds.
Pattu Films' Neela Vaanam- 1965 was scripted by K.Balachandar and directed by P.Madhavan. It starred Sivaji, Devika & Rajasri.
Sivaji and Rajasri love each other-- later by a turn of circumstances, he gets married to Devika, who is suffering from incurable ailment-
This song is sung by Sivaji to Rajasri in the initial reels of the proceedings- perhaps the only occasion when Rajasri paired with Sivaji.
I particularly remember Devika's splendid performance in the film.
'Oho ho odum ennangale' is my pick of the songs from the film- where PS soars high in joyful abandon. 'O Lakshmi' (LRE & Sadan) is a riot and 'Mangala mangaiyum' (PS-LRE) is charged with emotional undercurrents.

`littil' TMS can get to you, but nice laid back tune, transports you to the 50s/60s and great piano support. Is he singing about a flower? I remember kamban emandhaan :), KD is in his element. bb, was Odum ennangaley intentionally forgotten?

Forgot to mention another good PS solo in Neela Vaanam- 'Sollada vaai thirandhu ammavendru, thunbame marandhu vitten unnaal indru'.

Dear Balaji S,
Today I received the Nilavanam song - "O little flower".
The song is for Sivaji with lot of expression in his face. The song is for Rajashri, who is in love with Sivaji, before he married Devika. This film is penned by K. Balachander and directed by P. Madhvan.
If remember correctly, the song is pictureised near the swimming pool with lot of western background and swimming bikinis.
Pictureisation was exactly like the song and TMS and Sivaji fit together as usual. ore tharam! ore tharam! Aadava vilai aadava!
Still we can enjoy the flavour of the song.
Regards,
B.P. Thiagarajan

Saravanan: Thanks for mentioning "Sollada vai Thirandu". Do you recall the slowing down of the tempo in the second charanam? It has quite an effect.

Song of the Day: iravin madiyil from Sarasa B.A.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/iravinmadiyil.rm
- No, this is not the famous radio programme 'iravin madiyil'. This is a melodious song by P.B.Sreenivas. Music by Veda.
- A long time back, Sriram Lakshman mentioned this song as one of Veda's excellent original efforts. Anyone who has heard of Veda will immediately dump him as the Deva of yesteryears. Veda is known for lifting tunes from Hindi and English and passing them off in TFM. There are only a few original songs of Veda that are well-known (like the ones in Parthiban Kanavu).
I heard this song today and fell for it. Sounds like a song one would want to hear late night; A short song with minimal orchestration. PBS seems to be a perfect choice for this song. His humming in the end is the icing on the cake. All in all, a very different song and one that should be featured in SOTD.
- So far so good, right? Wrong. Looking up in newtfmpage for this song, I found very little discussion. But, I did find one line from Manisekaran, in the thread "Tamil Songs and their original English versions": Iravin Madiyil in Sarsa BA (PB Sreenivas) is from the Shadows.
So much for wishful thinking! It looks like this song is not an original from Veda. Nevertheless, enjoy the beautiful number.
