Can any HCIRF please enlighten this poor soul?
1.How many movies have run simply because of IRs rerecording?
2.Has he managed any recognition at the state, national,Asian, international levels for his BGM ?
3.Has he won any awards (say like Filmfare,Zee ,IIFA etc ) for his BGM?( i hear Adhesh Srivatsava won a Filmfare or Zee award for his BGM in "Border")
4.Who would you rate as the other good BGM scorers at the national ,international levels? (apart from the staple answer "Nobody")-[This is just to determine where he stands vis-a-vis "Them"]
5.Why is he not getting offers to score BGM for Hollywood movies when his credentials are extraordinary as per your judgement?
6.Are there any awards instituted by our govenments for BGM ...like the ones for special effects, editing? If they exist has he won anything? If it does not why don tyou guys make a representation to the government?(But if the Governement accepts your representation and gives the award to some other MDs .....)
7.Mention some scenes wherein without his BGM the scene would have fallen flat pulling down the whole movie.
8.Are there any movies by other MDs in which the BGM was ...say..Ok!?
I shall request all non-IR fans not to post in this thread.Lets listen!

This is the kind of post that makes one wonder how certain people do not understand. Just read what the following review has to say about IR's BGM ins Lajja.

Well Sreeni... if you think that was for you.. you are sadly mistaken.. I do not give respect to your opinions either as it certainly needs some class.

I have been reading posts in this thread for quite sumtime now and hence bothered to put my views on some of them. I have been following any news about ARR for the past 9 years and I don't think to have come across any sweeping statement that he does not like to do BGM. His BGMs in Lagaan
Zubeida
Bombay
Iruvar
Kizhakku Cheemaiyile
Andhi Mantarai
Thiruda Thiruda
The Legend of Bhagat Singh (listen to the sarfaroshi ki tamanna instrumental he plays in the background)
part et al are soul-stirring, stupendous efforts to say the least which cannot go unnoticed. I do agree that IR might be the best in the business, but I don't think u can give a raw deal to ARR. There r numerous films u can state where IR has given crap BGM. The same applies to ARR too.
Also, there is a impression created that IR is BGM and vice versa. I beg to differ.

"Beg to differ" is too mild, man. And if you think rational argument and presenting examples will convince anybody here, you're mistaken.
Obnoxiousness is the rule here.

Hello Nobody is comparing IR with ARR.. It is an insult to IR. Probably 20 years later if he still works his works may be reviewed. ARR BGM works are not up to the mark. I don't say he is bad. All i say it defenitely could have been better. He is not consistent. His primary job is to devote so much time to one peppy tune in every movie and couple of new age songs if there is scope couple of rap type songs.. He finishes off.
I have seen all the movies you mentioned. Apart from Roja other movies really lack bite. It needs tremendous dedication, grasping of situation for an MD to compose BGM for a given situation. Being in the business for 9 years as you mentioned his BGM skills should only improve.. 9 years a short period. But skills don't seem to have improved. Make no mistake, his bgm in baba, kannathil muthamittal and host of other recent movies was way below par compared to Roja. He thinks he can survive with old fame. But unless he shows more passion instead of desire(money) he will surely fade into dark.

No matter how fervently you and your breed recite your mantra of "he'll fade away, he'll fade away.." the fact remains that after 10 years not only has he not faded away, he has moved on to bigger and bigger successes. For the last ten years you've been muttering your hopeless spells like tribals trying to wish away a storm and you'll still be muttering like madmen ten years from now. Its time to look hard at your premises and prejudices.

I differ with you sreeni.. ARR has never thwarted anybody's career like IR did. IR has scored equal number of movies in the same period alongwith his sons. There are atleast 25 MDs getting chances.
ARR scores music for just one movie per year max 2. This year both flop Kannathil Muthamittal and Baba. Both the movies have awful songs. Background Music less say is better. They are way below even Harris Jayaraj. HJ is a better BGM scorer. He never went to any bigger and bigger success. Even Deva has been around for 8 or 9 years if i am right. He keeps recycling the same tune. Anything new? nothing.. IR's BGM for IVAN is divine. ARR has worked for 10 years hardly scored music for 50 movies. Atleast 30 movies are junk movies. None had good BGM except Roja.
Rest of the music are crap. Technically he has been in the field for 10 years. But in 1992 he scored music for just 2 films i guess. It is mostly like that. 2 movie 3 movies ... with that rate he can never be a threat to any MD. Without Maniratnam .... Rahman is a big ZERO.... No entry.. at all.. So don't overrate this crappy musician. You guys are like Jayalalitha worshippers and Rajini fans who don't know what they are doing..

Raghavan you cannot teach people like sreeni about nuances in BGM and composing.. All they can do is dance for "Arabi kadaloram" songs.. Let them listen to those 300 odd songs again and again..

Awe:
What nuances are you talking about? Are you a composer or scorer? Do you have a degree in music? What are your credentials? If you do have some knowledge in a certain area, does that automatically make you an authority on what others should listen to or like? Its a fact that the more one learns, the more humble one becomes.
You've no business sneering about so-called nuances when all your comments so far have been nothing more than egging on other IR-fans and pointing to obscure reviews to support your opinions. Why is IR's WCM-based approach and your personal fondness for that approach the only valid standpoint?
Why can't we have a multitude of approaches and styles to BGM scoring? ARR is making full use of the profusion of sounds, equipment and talent available now to develop his approach - an approach that has influenced Jeyaraj and Chowta among others.
Having been weaned on IR's music in your formative years, you may have no sympathy for the new sounds and styles. But that says more about your limitations than ARR's.

imho, ir is the best in bgm. but, arr is really good, even if not consistent. lagaan, kannathil muthamittal, roja even uyire are good indeed. this only shows that he can match anyone, if he really cares.
rupors are that he gives bgm works to deva's brothers. maybe he gives his instructions to them and they bungle it.
to OSIG:
ir has won the kerala state govt. award for his bgm in the movie kalapani togetherwith vs who won the best music award that year.

IR's BGM is legendary.
But each MD has his own style. We should sit back and enjoy and interpret thier vision for the movies, instead of this needless comparison.

Well.. there are new interpretations to the lack of creativity to score a background score for each and every scene in a movie on the part of ARR. But according to some guys the meticulous works of IR in the area of back ground scoring is no more than WCM-hased approach.. I believe it is Western Classical Music. I do not think he used any WCM-based approach in Mudhal Mariyadhai, Man Vaasanai, Kadalora Kavitaigal. His BGMs are always found wanting. I am going to write a detailed review of all his major movies, and also where he lacks the punch. Recently seen movie was Kannathil Muthamittal. I don't know if he scored BGM or someone else. Inspite of all the DTS effects created by some fellow for that movie, it fails stick to our mind. For such an emotional plot the songs are academic. It is the BGM that gives depth. Nobody questions ARR is hard working who puts hours and hours of efforts into creating music for each movie. That doesn't make him talented. Some guys can memorize something in 5 mts. Some can do it in 1 hour. Some can do it in 6 hours. Some do it in 12 hours. Some give up doing it. You cannot say all are equal IQ wise. IR falls under 5 mts category.
Don't take it literally. It needs certain amount of genius to do the miracles like IR did.

The reason why he is not able to score better BGM is he focusses more on scoring hit songs. People are not still aware of the importance of BGM.
Reviews focus mainly on the songs.. i saw the movie Bhagat Singh two days back.. What the portion of the review had to say..in planet bollywood is more or less accurately depicts what i thought about the movie.
" All in all The Legend of Bhagat Singh is a great effort which almost manages to hit the spot. A R Rahman has done a good job at composing the patriotic songs. The three versions of Desh Mere Desh and the two version of Sarfaroshi Ki Tamana are testament to that. His version of Mera Rang De Basanti is instantly likeable. However the album has many flaws. Rahman just doesnīt incorporate the periodic feel into his soundtrack. The Punjabi flavour of the album is also missing in several songs. In portions of the album there is a severe hangover of various other works by the same composer. Another flaw is that at parts the album is too modern for itīs time period setting. The album really scores on setting the mood of the movie, and itīs important to remember that this isnīt a soundtrack which is made to hit the charts, the songs are there to provide relief from a very serious story. "
His idea is to score good songs. End of the story.. Whether it suits the movie or period in which the movie was set he frankly doesn't care. If it fits it is your luck just like Lagaan. One good thing his good recording. But ARR is kinda selfish. He focusses only on his songs becoming hits. He never cares about whether it will help the movie or not.
