thanx folks. nice tonic for newbies like me :-)
Aditya:
I was discussing with my friend about your "dejavu". He liked it immensely and was wondering if u have complete songs like those, i.e., fully orchestrated.

Srik, finally I got a chance to listen to your "Gramiya Kadalan"...Although this kind of music is not anything special to my taste, I give good rating for this attempt...The way the song is constructed seems like a real adventure...
It appeared to me that all the tracks and phrases were not recorded at one stretch...looks like some are spontaneously recorded...Then the adventure is really in the way you mixed some of these spontaneous phrases...To me it appeared as though any mistake in this adventure will be a fatal failure...but u made it look like continuous and smooth...
vocal loop with "kadana kuthoohalam" swaras in the interlude, has given something special to my ears...To a trained ear, starting 3:01, it goes like this
One lead Vocal track sings
Pa Pa Sa Sa -> Ri Ri Sa Ni -> Ri Ri Ma Da -> Ma Ma Da Ni Pa, At the end of this line, I was expecting a melody phrase like "Ri Ma Da Ni Pa ." (3:07) -> contrary to a musical phrase, some rustic folk phrase comes which is like untrained voice ( but u know it appeared that it was Ri Ma Da Ni Pa:-)) )
Another vocal singing Ri Ri Ri Ri Ri Ri at 3:04 embellished this part.
Honestly I didn't like the voice which says "venam"...it was disturbing to me.
The intro voice and pad arrangement is like celestial folk...harmony and chordal arrangements are tasteful...
6/8 time signature seems like an apt rhythmic framework for this kind of mood...
Suresh has done good job and he can be considered like Amateur singer who can be considered for Hariharan kind of songs...
Udhaya, sorry for my inability to understand your lyrics completely. From what I understood from the lyrics, you've done great job here.
Good Work...
Regards,
Aditya

Aditya thanks for your review , clear as ever
If I remember the notes are
ga ga pa sa
ri ri sa ni
ri ri ma dha
ma ma dha ne sa
-- on the "venam" ,
Udhaya wrote "puli manai kolam poda..,a simple translation : my hands are wanting to draw a rangoli on this deer, hence it is actually a warning shot fired. The entire song was recorded in one sitting and only some backing vocals were recorded on another day. The catch word was "donated" by Mahesh. I got it into a tune asked suresh to sing it. I played most percusion parts live without much of midi programming. Over all we had lots of fun! making this song
thanks for your support
and Jay thanks for hearing it..
:)

Srik, before I forget, I appreciate and ask what's the chord progression in the 10:00 to 22:00 s played on pad -> it sounds chromatic in it's texture...This whole color invokes a mood of celestial folk...like some very 1000 yrs back tribal tradition...BTW towards the end at 4:48s when the voice says "ooooho..." there the backup chord...why did it sound to me like strange in terms of out of harmony...If you don't have time to answer these questions, perhaps I can negotiate it with my ears leisurely sometime later.
Again, I would conclude eating up this page space by saying that it's a beautiful work...

Aditya

on 10-20 opening pads If i remember it is
E c#m b7
this how the entire songs works.
E c#m b7 (e7) at times I would have added a 9th to b7 or e7.
4.48? i dont think it goes that long ,
however i can guess that you are talking about the e7 (might be an added 9th also )that placed over closing humming.
I have been never asked or told technically about progressions here, thanks for asking me:)
and one thing I really dont understand is what you meant by chromatic textures? If can you tell me or repharse it I can explain more...
:)

Srik,
I can't access your audio clip currently, hence let me give a try on what I mean by chromatic texture...you can clarify further if you want...
From your posting, taking the notes touched by all your chords in 10-20s, seems like "E F G# B C# D# F#", and the notes played in the lead voice in 10s to 20s ( some funny phrase ) -> these notes along with notes played on the pads combined at times as though somebody ( lead or backup ) is out of scale -> and this phenomenon is what I mean by Chromatic Texture...Especially when you apply b7 chord...
Looks like you have really played quiet a bit in this score...I really appreciate it. I believe that we as listeners should start paying more attention to encourage the musician to explore further...

Aditya

Aditya still i am not clear...out of scale? where?
let me clear few things,
common chords in this songs were,
E: E+G+B
C#m: C#+E+G#
B7: B+D# +F# +A
have added 9th in someplaces based on the melody.
Where us the Chromatic scale is when notes are separted by 1/2 step, which is when you play all the keys in the octave ie...c c# d# e f F# g G# a a# c. I have not used any thing chromatic that i am aware of.
imo, full Chromatic scalling in best used in lower timbre like double bass or bass guitar.
(eg: in pudu mappilaiku by IR, check the second bgm lots of chromatic usages, best is the
double bass part which plays chormatic scale over the lead string section,
this comes in a background so you need to hear it with attention)
you have really played quiet a bit in this score
--may be you have started to note it now, Anyways!... keep hearing..:)

==== Appreciating others work is one of my pleasures as a Musician ======================
Srik, Now I have access to your clip and I listened it another time...this time I observed that there's no out of scale or chromaticism
in scale terms...ofcourse you have confirmed this earlier in your posting -> after all this music is your baby:-))
the first 10-20s seemed like following
-----------------1st two bars ---------------------
6/8 6/8
================== ==================
Vocal G# G# G# G# G# . A G# F# E F# G#
6/8 ( E + G# + B )
Pad ==================
. . . . . .
----------------------------------------------------
--------------- 2nd two bars ---------------------------
6/8 6/8
================== ==================
Vocal G# G# G# G# G# . A G# F# E F# G#
6/8( C# + E + G# ) 6/8 (B + D# + F# + A )
Pad ================== ==================
. . . . . . . . . . . .
---------------------------------------------------------
- When you apply b7 chord in the 4th bar, vocal track performs note G# at the end, the pad was sustaining on B, D#, F# and A
although timbres ( perhaps the octaves? ) are different between the tracks, the effect is like playing "B, D#, F#, G#, A"...
if these tracks were playing these notes together in the same scale, I guess there would be some strange effect...
even otherwise, I think it could be one of the reasons why it created some celestial folk mood...
Please clarify some more if you can on this good and thoughtful work -> Perhaps about the strange effect that I observed during last "oho"...You said added some 9th to E7...
Regards,
Aditya

Simple correction "if these tracks were playing these notes together in the same scale,"...
read it as
"if these tracks were playing these notes together in the same octave"
