Sabaash ..Sariyaana potti....
Good one Ali and OISG..
Keep going...
See that you omit words like IR or ARR....This will spoil the whole nice environment building up here....
Just a thought.

Ali:
Your write up was very good and extensive..I think you should have spent a couple of hours typing that..
But, when ever you compare SPB or KJY with MR or KK then why do you always expect the former to try and match the latter..Why don't you see how the latter can do with the former's songs...
Sure nobody is born till now to sing the "Raamakathaa Gaanalayam" from Bharatham as KJY has done...
Also, innumerable songs of SPB which are strictly commercial and might even be rejected by pundits as waste, where SPB shines as a singer who is good at any thing you give him..
Its like always saying Can Sachin play like Sobers as he scored a century against England at Antigua..or so...Why don't we ever see can the same sobers score even a half century in dead and docile pitches of Kanput, nagput, cattuck etc...Why do we always draw line right to left..why not in other direction?

>>Satham illatha song is a 4 minute song with no break -- listen to it. Infact there is no editing or technical gimicks in this song bcos SPB has sung this song many times on the stage too.<<
very true, when SPB/KJY/KSC visited London in 2001, at royal albert hall, SPB sang this song, he ( as he is the most humble person) asked the audience to forgive him, if he makes any mistakes!
oh boy, this guy went on for full 4 minute singing this song, at the end, he was gasping for breath, the whole audience stoop up and applauded with appreciation!

>>On other matters, it can even hold true that 'Ek Duje Ke Liye' would probably have happened in Rafi's voice if he had not passed away since LP were so demoralized after his death that they were looking to compose "Rafi" again<<
ridicilous arguments, so if rafi was never born or born after SPB, then 'Ek Duje Ke Liye' would probably have happened in SPB's voice.

>>You say imagine Rafi/KK singing in SI languages, well I bet they could have if they concentrated more on it because if they could sing effectively in hindi/urdu which is harder, then what would make it so difficult to sing in SI languages when it is less difficult in terms of breath control. Don't misunderstand me, I am saying all this in the context of breath control that words in hindi/urdu take up more breathing room than SI language words.
<<
this is a load of CRAP, dravidian languages are more harder to learn/pronounce,I am a tamilian, I can easily pronounce a hindi word, but the same thing can not said about a punjabhi pronouncing a tmail word, sighs!!!!!!!!

No raghu, I too remember reading what IR had said about Rafi recently...
But IR, SPB are all from the samne period..IR and SPB were listening to rafi's songs in tea stalls and other places and taking notes from it when they were searching for chances..So if IR says its SPB who I like the best then even his inner self will question him asking what were you listening to when SPB didn't even come to picture?
Also, rafi is an idol for both....That is why he said Rafi is Rafi.....
I toohave a great regard for Rafi and would not like to compare him...but purel;y in a cinema point of view and over the 50 years of our cinema history since independance....no other singer is better than SPB in overall singing skill in cinema accross most of the languages, types and periods.

>>SPB has excelled in Telugu his mother tongue,Tamil the language which horned his skills,Kannada and finally put his stamp on Hindi with a national award.I think no other Indian male singer could manage that.KK/Rafi would have become clowns like Udit Narayan had they tried.Singing "Allu Allu" et all...>Hindi actors ,generally wooden faced, could not match SPB on screen.Take for eg Salman for whom SPB did most of his songs.SPB could bring the emotins of a young lover in his voice even in a song with inane lyrics and scores over his co singers like Udhas,Sanu.I am talking about "Jeeye tho jeeye" from Sajan. But in the end wht you see on screen is a patheic 6-pack Salman Khan standing like a dead-wood with a constipated expression.<<

may be true, I am not denying that, but many times IR mentione the word TMS, so does that make TMS the greatest ever, certainly not!
Yes I agree, IR/SPB/KJY all think rafi as their idol.
Oh by the way, I am big fan of both KK & rafi as well, but i am really very frustrated at the narrow mindness of the northies

Might not be the greatest ever but certainly one of the all time greatest along with Gantasaala and others....
I get bugged before seeing your posts regarding the bass and all...but Man these singers TMS and GS have great bass in all ranges....Well before you bounce on me...I still maintain that SPB haqs the best bass that I have heard..This is MPO.

aiyoo saami, enna lolla
TMS never had a bass, he had nasal voice, he often sang in stressed voice :(
Yes, I liked Ghantasala, but Dr.BMK had a better bass than ghantasala.
but SPB has the best bass out of all, :))
so peace friend

You statment makes perfect sense. Why KK/Rafi could not reach SPB/KJY s levels ...that should be the question!
Why any Northern MDs could not get an out and out classical album like Karnan by VR and venture into, like KVM in Sankarabaranam or IR in Salangai oli.In another thread we had compared the Hindi equivalants of Shankarabaranam - it was like comparing Bradman with Rajinder Singh Ghai...
Tell me ONE Classical song in Hindi films in the last 30 years...in say Khamaj,Bhairav,Marwa
Tell me one single imaginative use of Hinduatani music or a certain raga in Bollywood in the last 30 years..say a Dvijavanthi,Behag,Desh,Madhuvanthi
Tell one single piece of innovation like Duet with Sax as the lead,A thavil use in Jeans song,a fusion like Poongathve Thaalthiravai, a use of raga like Magadhi which has just 4 swaras in Adhisaya ragam
SI MDs,Singers have always been experimentng and improvising. But north stopped growing after Alam Ara and Raja Harischandra

Gibbersih. stop pretending. You hadnt even heard the most famous Rafi songs (like baiju bawra) before you started making sweeping statements about him!

I have the answers to all these questions! Its all in the affirmative!
"But north stopped growing after Alam Ara and Raja Harischandra "
This is a sweeping statement IMO. Not true! Dont forget the likes of Shyam Benegal, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Bimal Roy.
"In another thread we had compared the Hindi equivalants of Shankarabaranam - it was like comparing Bradman with Rajinder Singh Ghai... "
In another thread, some people even compared the Tamil remake of "2 aankhein 12 haath". Draw your own conclusions :-)
"Rafi not to the level of SPB".
This is just your personal opinion :-) In Hindi film music, Rafi is an institution and SPB an embarassment. It is good that we are spared the ordeal of listening to SPB in Hindi.
"SPB could bring the emotins of a young lover in his voice even in a song with inane lyrics"
And what emotions does SPBs voice carry when he sings in Hindi? He sucks big time in Hindi and his accent is so bad that one feels like tearing his hair apart upon listening to a language being murdered like that. A national award for SPBs Hindi songs is the greatest farce!
