I was one of first to post when ARR won NA for Lagaan last year!
This time for KM...hmmm, all I can say is the NA committee thought they were writing BSRB exam - random ticking! :)

KM does not deserve so many awards-- It looks like the awards were bought out. The music does not deserve national awards by any standards.
Going by the comments of the Jury that the "music reached the realms of poetry", didn't the same jury see Bharathi songs reaching the realms of poetry?
National awards are pretty sketchy these days.
ARR - getting Padmashri (Those days sivaji was the only one to get it that too after a long stint of consistent performance)
Thotta Tharani -- Padmashri (I do not think his works deserve the award so soon.)
Basically, Padmashri has lost its value and the jury has diluted these awards pretty much.

The music of KM does not deserve a national award? Assuming the above is true, let us list other possible candidates for the award and analyze them one by one. TLOBS was a decent score, and so was Devdas. What movies in Tamil would be possible competitors? The informed may list them here.
On another note, I see that ARR had two national awards before HJ exited his troupe. What is surprising is that ARR also has two national awards (keeping aside the allegations that national awards committees in recent days are relatively less quality conscious) after HJ's exit! So much for those (misplaced) statements that HJ was the reason behind ARR's success.
Why does ARR elicit such extreme emotions? Either people are much devoted to him or they are virulently against him. May be that is his destiny!

Dorai,
Thota Tharani --- too soon?? No man, his work has been amazing over the years. He more than deserves such recognition.
Music4ever,
To discuss that we should first start with the fact that Tamil and Hindi are not the only languages in India.
Dig:
some facts reg national awards
There's plenty of lobbying for national awards too. If you are a tamilian (or whatever language) and project your favorites in a convincing fashion to the other jury members without giving hint of favoritism, then it will more likely get national award. So the person with the best lobbying capabilities will eventually win over. I am just saying this in general context without any particular reference to any awards given. This has happened in the past.
end dig:

ARR congrats.
You have good knack man! Keep it up.What's next> Bharat ratna? It is easy if you compose an album with Vajpayee songs! Yo've got it!go man go!
ravi, your word may in all possibilites will be true. But I do not know if parasuram would be competitor. if so I am sure that would bag the best MD award and more so even Pravin mani will get award for this because he did it on instruction from ARR. Some (in)juries may claim P songs have reached the pinnacle for Music direction in films!
Some "Northie/Mumbai friends" make IR will not get award because he is doing only "TN" music. Do you mean to say "TN" songs is not part of Indian-ness.

Jag, why don't you provide a list of movies from other languages that are possible competitors for national award? I have no problem with that. I just mentioned the Tamil and Hindi movies because those were the names that came to my mind immediately -- starting the ball rolling so to say.
Who do you think lobbied convincingly for KM's national award? It would be interesting to hear your views.

Look at Speaker's post. ARR fans. Laugh off! hahahaha!
Tarty sarcasm mixed post of tears mourning another IR defeat at the hands of ARR!

Music4ever,
My comment was made only to say that there could be better musical movies than KM. I don't have any list of such movies. Though I must venture to say that the tastes may vary widely, so whatever list I have might not suit everyone, and least of all the jury. KM had three good songs, but we can definitely name 'hazaar' other IR movies which had such melodious songs and went unnoticed, not even mentioning about BGM.
The lobbying would most likely have been done by a Tamil jury member. I don't know the name though. Maybe someone in DF knows it. www.idlebrain.com has a detailed article on lobbying: http://www.idlebrain.com/edit/index.html
My comments were based on this article. As I said before my comments are not intended to hurt anyone. Though some idiots in this forum seem to think that this is some kind of victory over IR.

Only reason IR is not getting NA nowdays is he is no longer doing any Hindhi films...ARR is hot now in hindhi, so gets the award...North's always praise South's only if they need them. I am damn sure Kamal & IR wont get any NA hereafter, even if they come up with great stuff.

Folks,
It is not an issue of any MD getting NA because he is doing hindi films. It is all a qualitative issue. KM is definitely a movie worthy of NA. And I would like to remind you folks that ARR won the MA in 1993 for Roja but for 1994 and 1995, it was bagged by Johnson, a Malayalam MD (He never made any Hindi movie at that time!!). And I guess ARR did not do any Hindi movie in 1993 to get NA for Roja. It would be good if the linguistic barriers are not mentioned for the award.

boss, kamal is heights of "artificial action"... dunt get angry and just compare kamal with these people.... mohanlal,raghuvaran,t.s.balaiyah,m.r.radha,ajay devgan... they are so natural.. kamal is a gr8 drama artiste but not a gr8 cinema artiste.... that's y he doesent get NA... IR's music is stganant rite from 74' he has never tried to improvise outside carnatic and tamil folk boundaries... that's y he never gets recognition outside Tamilnadu...... pls.. dunt get angry folks... i'm sorry if i had ur icon's image.... i hope it is not as absurd as ambleen's ridiculing of ARR.....

KM's music and share the celebrations i guess... pls dunt spoil the party... GETOUT....

Reading the interview of M.M.Alex in Dinakaran, it does not make any sense on how these panels are formed and on what basis these awards are chosen. If people who dont even have a clue about the story and background of the movie see it, how can they judge it fairly. And when you have North Indians seeing the South Indian language movies, I really doubt if they try to understand the theme of those movies as they might be so different from the run-of-the-mill hindi movies.
Someone like M.M.Alex debating for those movies with the rest of the jury panel whom are North Indians, and everyone splitting the awards finally, it clearly looks like a case of making everyone happy situation.
With due respect to Ajay Devgan's acting in TLOBS, any true movie fan would tell that Anbe Sivam's Kamal deserved more than the only 1 vote (from the sole Tamilian) it actually got against the 19 for Ajay Devgan.
In the case of a tie between Konkona Sen and Simran, it perfectly makes sense to give the award to Konkona Sen as she dubbed with her own voice. I hope they consider it only if it is a tie between two!!!!
Again, having heard the music of both TLOBS and KM, I feel TLOBS was a fantastic effort by ARR (even slightly better than KM) for the sheer sense of patriotism it evokes in anyone. The range of songs in the movie...from patriotic numbers to a peppy authentic Punjabi folk, from a melodious duet to classical Bhajan, pathos to happiness - it was a much more versatile and a touching score than KM. I would have voted for TLOBS rather than KM.

And please dont make baseless comments here. When you criticise that KM does not deserve the best music..come up with a movie that had better music than KM with points and then make a statement. Just dont come up saying that there might be movies with better score than KM's. That argument could be applicable to whomever wins an award for whatever. That would be just a guess which does not merit any consideration in this forum.
