1.The 'Yuhi chaala ' song from swades was orginally composed for Lagaan .
2.Harris Jeyaraj worked with him only for 2 films !!
3.On today's music -
"What is today's Tamil film music all about? They are nothing more than fast numbers or remix downloaded. What took me weeks to make music for a "Gentleman" or "Rangeela" can be done today if you have a computer, software and then pre-set the rhythms and you have a disco number! Fast music is no big deal today as anyone can become a music director"
4.Rajiv Menon film in tamizh .

"How long have I been a serious TFM listener?"
You know the question makes me laugh, you don't know how much it sounds like a bar-bouncer demanding the age of a prospective, and rather youthful-looking, customer before letting him in.

I never claimed ARR to be the buddha of bar or wutever. I was jus responding to ur stmt that 7GRC had irish music, which it didnt.
>>Googling the entire Irish orchestra for my >>benefit though helpful is hardly the point, are >>you saying that all of them need to be used >>before you'll be convinced
i dont remember (or see) me saying that. But its like saying one violin makes a philharmonic orchestra! Would a vocal kutcheri be complete without a mirudangam and a violin accompaniment? but it mite go ahead well without a ghatam and a kanjira. thats wut im trying to say. if the basic elements of a style of music are absent, how can u say it falls under style X or style Y?
JP, im kissing :p

"I don't know why you think that criticism is only criticism if you call a press-meet to do it. I don't think IR, NS or Kreem called press-meets to berate their respective successors. The frustation spilled out advertently or inadvertently in one interview or another. Once upon a time when confronted with similar questions ARR was far more generous about people like NS and Anu Malik. Surely it's not possible that he thinks less of YSR/VS than he does of Malik/NS? Oh, wait YSR/VS are a true threat in a way the Hindi composers weren't. "
===
This is what ARR was asked once...
What would you do if you were locked up in a room with Anu Malik and Anand Milind? Would you get into a fight or talk to them?.
Thus spake ARR:
Of course, I'd talk to them--but definitely not on the subject of copyright laws.
other interviews...
Some other time, some other interview:
Q: Many of the Bombay-based music directors think that you have become predictable.
A: (Rahman frowns for the first time and shrugs again.) Many of these so-called music directors keep on copying from me. I cannot take them to court for that. They lift my music from a Tamil film and use it in a Hindi film. That's what is called lifting a song. If you feel that my songs sound similar, that's because it is my style.
====
Is this going soft on NS/Anu malik and the likes? Nope, I dont think so. Moreover, ARR never mentioned YSR and VS. It is you, who is bringing these two names up repeatedly.
Now, I am not saying that these 2 are inferior to ARR... Certainly ARR never said this. It is you who is reading between his lines and creating this ruckus.
ARR made a general comment about the tamil film industry about which he has a great passion. He is a senior statesman in the TFM and he definitely has the right to air his disappointments about this.
Younger music directors need not just ape his use of technology and the so called 'loops'. They also need to learn other stuff like an urge to distinguish oneself and one's music in the industry and not just go with the flow.
If a gaana song becomes a hit, 50 such songs follow; if a techno song becomes a hit 50 such songs follow... They all end up sounding the same. This is today's trend.
This is more dangerous and detrimental to TFM than the single MD monopoly that existed before ARR broke into the scene. He brought in a new sound and once every few films strived to create a new sound. People called it 'experimental music' and some of it was trashed. But ARR never flinched and kept doing new stuff once every now and then. Now, nobody can deny this...
Now, even though there are a number of music directors, most of their songs sound similar. Very few have made a distinct sound for themselves.
ARR voluntarily reduced the number of tamil films from 6 or 7 per year to 2-3 films per year. No music director crashed his party and took away his chances. It would be crazy to even think so.

Adding to wut Dude said, ARR infact had lot of good words to say when asked abt the current crop of MD's...this was in a TV interview last year (cant remember which one though). He said good things abt VS especially.

super post dude.......ARR can never speak like this abt. young ppl........the most important reason y he was able to overtake IR in number of fans was that he was such a humble human-being......i(&many others from India) started looking upon him as an idol bcos of this reason....so if he talks arrogantly then he will also go IR's way.......no artiste is bigger than the mass....so they shuld always keep their respect intact with the mass.....

Gosh! The athai thathai viththai number in Manmadhan blatantly mimicks the Boys number Sa re ga me. Ambuli mama ambuli mama in that Surya starrer is a clever remake of Paal polE padhinaaru enakkoru girl friend venum from Boys. What next? A smart tweaking of Udhaya Udhaya ularugirEn?
There is a number in Chellame (HJ is the MD) which is a shameless lift of the old number "ManjaL poosi manjam konda rama rama mandhirathai solli vidu seetha seetha".
Arr's contribution: Listen to Good bye Nanba song. You will be reminded of Andha naal mudhal indha naal varai vaanam maaravillai.

Talking of Nadeem Shravan, I was watching the movie Dhadkan and was quite enchanted with the songs. Most of them, though, seem to have the Arabic flavor.

yes,the part "Andha saalaiyil nee vanthe searamal"
and "Andha naal mudhal intha naal varai"
only this part is the common in both songs!

Music4ever,
Paal Poole is dangerously similar to Carnatic song, Nagumo nee kanale.
Deva lifted it in one of the Rajini's movie and but was thrashed so harsh. But ARR adopted it and made it western. Do you agree?

"Oh, wait YSR/VS are a true threat in a way the Hindi composers weren't.
"
says you. Rrahman doesnt think so. He has bigger projects in hand at the moment made by his own choice. Thats what I have been trying to tell you. HJwas the second choice for Anniyan.
"Well if that's a 1:5 ratio and Rahman's is the same, doesn't it mean that they're equals, atleast commercially? "
No. Because the total number of albums come into play. Last year Rahman spent more time outside the country. Its not like he did 10 albums and 8 of them were failures. On the contrary, I believe AE did well despite the movie being a failure and "New" songs are still in the charts
"Why? Much as I respect SPB, his lament is the ever-familiar oldster complaint, namely that everything now/new is discordant, dissonant, discomfiting. "
definitely not. SPB is not that kind of person if you happen to know his personality and such.
"Certainly many at that time considered Rahman's singing, his use of untrained voices etc to be "discordant". Now does anyone even raise an eyebrow when Simbu belts out all his own songs in a movie? See that is progress for you, every revolution advancing through "discordances".
"
Again this is not about music being "discordant" in general. I agree some old-timers have that view. this is about a composer not able to spot a wrong note in his own composition. Theres a difference. And yet you feel these are the MDs who are taking us thru a quest of space, timbre and what not. Amusing :-)

Once again you have mixed your own likes/dislikes with commercial success and every time I refute your musical points you go back to your commercial success thing. Wwhy Rahman wasnt as busy or as commercial successful last year has already been dealt with. Its his own choice to concentrate less on TFM while he is onto some bigger things. At this stageb in his career, with some prestigious project lined up he doesnt have to feel "threatened". He is not competing for local TFM market anymore

Vijay:
"Once again you have mixed your own likes/dislikes with commercial success "
Where? I said that ARR's commercial failures are a cause for concern, I did not say whether I liked or disliked Yuva etc. For all you know I might have liked them.
You know Vijay, at this point, we're making no progress at all. Bottomline is I believe:
1) ARR has had a string of COMMERCIAL failures
2) Commercial success is closely linked to creative energy based on my observation of how the careers of various successful MDs have evolved in the past.
3) This fact has artistic implications for Rahman since it may indicate the need for a stylistic overhaul.
You believe:
1) Neither Rahman nor you care about the commercial outcome of his projects.
2) His creativity is as its peak and far exceeds that of his competition.
3) He has prestigious projects coming that you believe to clinch the argument.
Is there any point in us trying to scrabble furiously on our individual sides of this absolutely impassable gulf? I don't see any. Let's just watch as future events prove one or the other stance correct.
