Gems of K S Chitra

Off late, K S Chitra has become one of my hot favourites amongst female singers. Her voice has a unique and rich timbre which I really enjoy. lets take this opportunity to discuss songs by her in Tamil and various other languages - Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu. Her songs sung under the tutelage of Ilayaraja, AR Rehman, Ravindran et al are really excellent, moreover she has a delightful classical touch as is seen in her rendition of "alaipayuthe" and the Sindhubhairavi songs. She has done a great deal of Hindu and Christian devotional albums in Southern languages...lets discuss those. My favourite Chitra song so far remains "gopika vasantham" and her duet with SPB in the Telugu
movie Swathikiranam. What a voice and that sharpness!

So please, lets discuss her songs!! :-)

  "She" refers to SJ. I remember SPB was mentioning about this particular incident long time back in some interview in TV/magazine. I wish some one familiar with Kannada songs can help out here. I've been trying really hard to get hold of that song for a long time now.

  Kaumudi, That Kannada song is "Shiva Shiva Ennada Naalige Eeke", beautifully rendered by L.Vaidhyanathan, sung by SJ. This song has two different ragas. SJ told me once It is one of the challenging song after "Singaravelane Deva". She did really hard work. I cannot explain how beautifully sung by her. Unfortunately you dont get that song anywhere. But I do have that song becoz SJ gave me one cassette full of her classical songs under different MD's(Kannada songs) MY another fav song is "Bhuvaneshwariya Nene Manasave", this is based on Mohana Kalyani raga. IMO in front of Shiva Shiva song there is nothing in Chitra's Paadariye(Sindhu Bhairavi, based on Saaramathi raga). SJ sung lot of classical kannada songs under all most all old and New MD's in Kannada Films. Some people knows only SJ's songs under the great IR. Poor guys.

  Some people tend to criticize others which is not of a good taste being such a greatfan of such a famous singer as they tend to prove.All people have their own tastes and styles.If anyone has anything to say discuss only about the singer etc.Dont bring other people into this.

  Thank you so so much for the info. I can't tell you how much I am relieved after atleast knowing that that information is right. I am glad you have direct contact with her. I am big fan of hers. So much so, that my mother started calling SJ my "ammamma"(mother's mother in telugu). I miss her singing so much these days. Alas, I guess one has to accept the fact that people's voices do age.
  Anyway, coming to the most difficult question. Is there anyway, I could acquire a copy of that casette that you mentioned...maybe buy it from you or some arrangement like that. If so, could please post next time with your email address linked so that I can contact you separately. I am willing to pay "reasonable price" for that priceless casette. I hope I am not taking liberties here in asking you this. I guess I am just thrilled that someone indeed responded to my query. Please don't worry if you cannot suggest any remedy for this problem. I am thankful to you nevertheless.

  If only this had not been newtfmpage, I would go on and write how iunfluential SJ and KSC had been on MFM. Some songs like 'thaLiritta kinaakkaL' and 'sandhye' are masterpieces.

  I listened to Alaipayudhey and other songs by Chithra in musicindiaonline. It sounds like a totally different singer. I would never have guessed hadn't I known. Her bass frequencies are much more pronounced that what I was used to in film songs.

  I've listened to chithra's carnatic songs in musicindiaonline (after someone here pointed that out). Very melodious and I agree her voice sounds quite different. I liked the selection of songs too. Chithra is blessed to have such a good voice. Hope she continues to release more private albums.

  SJ's some classical songs are available in musicindiaonline. Once I have seen SJ's classical based film songs casette in the music shop.
  
  Kaumudi, I really willing to give you "no Price" for that priceless casette, but HOW? By the way are you in US, if so you give your postal address I will definetely send it to you. "Shiva..." song is from the Movie "Hemavathi".
  
  Mr AVR I think you heard SJ's classical songs in "UPASANE' MD Vijaya Bhaskar.

  The great songs of chitra is 'Idhazil Kathai' the movie Unnal.M.T and one more is 'Kanna Varuvaaya Meera Kekkiraal' something like that, with KJY, I dont know the movie. Both songs are rendered by IR. These two songs are my all time fav.

  Kanna varuvaayaa is from KB's Manathil Uruthi Vendum.
  Yet another good song from that movie is Sangga Thamizh kaviye, also by KJY and Chitra. The classical part is more pronounced in this song.

  1. Theendai - supposed to be one of the few songs in Sri ragam. her voice is just great.
  2. Kannaamoochi - her beginning is just too good. Frankly, I liked her solo more than the duet.
