Hi all,
I have learnt lots of Tamil words through tfm, but there are so many words that I still dont know the meaning of. I would love to improve my Tamil vocabulary, but resources are limited. I was wondering if we can have a thread that helps out in this regard. People post the words they dont understand and someone who knows responds with the answer. For this to succeed the old-timers have to get involved, bcos I dont know many younger guys who know much Tamil words :)
Ex.
1. samsaaram enbathu veenai..santhosham enbathu raagam.. xxx xxx illai
I used xxx because I dont even know what he was saying. was it "salanam galadhi illai"? What does that mean?
2. En mana vaanil siragai virikkum.. from Kasi. There is a line kalakalakala vena thulli kuthikkum sinnanchiru kalaiyey.. what does kalai mean?
3. Anjanam. What does it mean? (Used in various songs)
4. Uchi vaguntheduthu pichu poo vacha kili..What does this mean?
Please answer people!

KP,
It is "kaadhalenum mudiviliyil ...". The word "mudivili" means "that which has no end". The whole line can be translated as "There are no clocks to mark the passage of time in the eternity of love."

what does maasar mean?
- From: peeps (@ 12.162.224.6)
on: Wed May 28 11:28:03 EDT 2003
tigger,
its "maasaru ponney varuga"
maasaru means maasu maruvatra...
maasu maruvatra means clean..pure..without any impurities..
so maasaru ponney means pure gold..
what does "maanuthu mandhayila" means?
what does " poli kaatil koovum kuyile" means?

peeps/tigger:
maasu means flaw, dust or fault. maru also means the same and also mole or wart. Sometimes it is also used for 'tarnish'.
In what song/s did you hear the last two phrases? It might help in interpreting the context. 'poli' is fake or imitation.

Raj,
oops..the two phrases are from the same song..the song is "maanoothu mandhayiley maangutti peththa mayiley...potta pulla poranthathunnu poli(boli??) kaatil koovum kuyiley..." from the film "kizhakku cheemayiley"..

peeps: I listened to the song. Looks like the movie is about life in Tirunelveli area. The words are regional. 'Maanoothu' refers to an area for deers to breed. 'Mandhai' is herd. 'Manoothu mandhai' is a herd of deers in manoothu. 'Boli' is a word used to identify a bull meant for breeding cattle. 'Boli kaaLai' is a bull in a herd of cattle to impregnate cows. 'Boli kaadu' probably means a forest/area where deers are impregnated. Somebody from Tirunelveli area may be able to shed more light. The song is probably taken from some country song--'nattu paadal'

interpreter thanks.
Another question:
in the song 'oru naaL iravu kaN urakkam pidikkavillai'Susheela sings
'thinaiyum panaiyaal vaLarndhe iru vizhigaL'
what does thinaiyum panaiyaal mean?
- From: Raj (@ 206.97.63.112)
on: Thu May 29 14:50:31 EDT 2003
KP: It is 'thinaiyum panaiyay'. Thinai is a millet like kampu, kezhvaragu, varagu etc (small grains). Panai is palmyrah (a type of palm tree)from which you get 'nongu'. Thinai plant is like a tall grass. The song says: 'what was small(trifle) like small grain has grown very large like a panai. Or what was a minor irritation has grown into a big concern (worry) making me lose sleep. 'Thinai panaiyay ' is a common phrase used to describe exaggeration of something trifle.

what is kamugum?
- From: Raj (@ 206.97.63.112)
on: Fri May 30 15:20:13 EDT 2003
KP: 'kamugu' is arecanut palm (pAkkumaram). In this context ' a pandhal decorated with banana trees/leaves and arecanut leaves/trees.

what is a karpaga maram?
is it a real maram or karpannai maram :)
- From: Raj (@ 206.97.63.112)
on: Mon Jun 2 20:20:56 EDT 2003
other_side: I think it is mythological. This tree is supposed ot grant the devotee all wishes. I think that is why the goddess in Mylapore is named Karpagambal or Karpagavalli.
This tree is mentioned in Thiruppugazh. I am not aware of any sthala vriksham by that name. Experts in Hindu mythology might be able to clarify.

other_side,
'kaRpaga maram' (or a more dignified 'tharu') and the cows 'kaamadhenu / nandini' are supposed to give you all that you desire to have! Just as an 'akshaya paaththiram' keeps giving you food endlessly!

from the song:
from the song "enna vilai azhagey.. "(kathalar thinam) there is a line..uyir kondu varum pathumaiyey..
what is pathumai?
... I think that is why the goddess in Mylapore is named Karpagambal or Karpagavalli...
Raj,
so when someone names their daughter karpagam are they referring to this mythological tree or does it mean someone who has karpu (chastity)?
- From: Raj (@ 206.97.63.112)
on: Tue Jun 3 13:24:37 EDT 2003
tigger: Pathumai means idol, statue or doll. In this context she is a doll. Thangappathumai is golden doll.
Karpaga maram is a variation of kalpa tharu (Sanskrit). When they name a girl Karpagam she is named after the Goddess. In Tamil, it can be interpreted as a 'chaste girl' (to my knowledge!)
- From: interpreter (@ 4.41.45.232)
on: Tue Jun 3 20:29:16 EDT 2003
As Raj said, a girl is named after the goddess when she is named "kaRpagam". But here is another spin on "kaRpagam". It can be split as kaRpu + agam to give the meaning kaRpin agam or kaRpin uRaividam, which means "where chastity resides" - that is, the girl is chastity personified. (agam=house/home)

this time i thought i will explain something...
this is for people who dont know the meaning of
"illavu katha killi"....
illavu means illavam panchu(cotton) ...
the illavam panchu is a type of cotton that is very soft, it grows in trees.it looks like any normal fruit type but inside the fruit there will be cotton.
the bird waits for the fruit to ripe.it kind of checks everyday to see whether it is fully ripe.but when the fruit ripes it bursts and the cotton inside the fruit flies off.The poor bird which was waiting all these long, get disappointed :).
so this term is used most of the time when the hero waits for a girl and somebody else marries her.
any additons and corrections are welcome

tx raj!
movie: kadal meengal
song: thaalaatuthey vaanam..
line: thaazhaamal madimeethu thaarmeega kalyanam..
what does thaazhaamal & thaarmeega mean?
- From: Raj (@ 206.97.63.112)
on: Thu Jun 5 20:17:33 EDT 2003
tigger: It should be dhaarmika. It means 'just', 'by law' ,'according to dharmam' etc. 'Thaazhamal' means 'without being submissive','without yielding' ,'without losing dignity','withoutlowering oneself' etc. I am not familiar with the song. It probably means -'a wedding that is right and lawfull without any pressure or coercion.

on: Thu Jun 5 20:40:21 EDT 2003
tigger: I just listened to the song. Sound like it is 'thaaLaamal'. I take it to be 'thaazhaamal' which also means without waiting. If you have seen the movie, the context should be clear. May be, they were asked to wait and they decided not to wait and feel that just getting together is like being wed.

Friends,
KB's 'sollaththaan ninaikkiREn' was based on Maniyan's play by the same name, which again was based on his own story 'ilavu kaaththa kiLiyO?'. I think there were two three 'ilavu kaaththa kiLigaL' in the film, most prominent being Srividya!
In plain Tamil, 'thaaLaamal' means thaanga mudiyaamal, though I could never make out the meaning in the 'kadal meengaL' song!

if this question is whats that "tha??????medu kalyaaNam" then an interesting answer(?) to it:
i read in some other thread that, it is "thaarmeedhu kalyaaNam". The thamizh word "Thaar" has several meaning to it one of the literature meaning is horizon. So probably that phrase means "marriage in the horizon".

what does 'punnagai' mean..can it be extended to diff situations like 'mandira punnagai'..'punnagai minnudhey'(Kadhalin deepam onru song)
- From: Raj (@ 206.97.63.112)
on: Sat Jun 7 14:22:05 EDT 2003
Prabhu: 'punnagai' means 'smile'. 'nagai' means
'laugh'. 'nagaichuvai' means 'humour'. 'mandira punnagai' is enchanting smile. 'punnagai minnudhey' is 'smile flashes' or 'smile shines'. 'punsirippu' means the samething,'smile'.
- From: Raj (@ 206.97.63.112)
on: Sat Jun 7 14:34:14 EDT 2003
Prabhu: 'punnagai' may also be interpreted as 'pleasant smile' or 'gentle smile'. Nagai is used intechangeably for 'smile' and 'laugh'. Tamil film songs are probably full of 'punnagai','punmuruval' and 'punsirippu'!
