Here is my understanding of Karma from the ad's on Korg site and the demos:
Give Karma a chord and it will generate a phrase
to suit it - the phrase could be an arpeggio
(chord notes played up and down and in patterns)
(as in intro of Adi athadi) or block chords or anything in between.
If it is Orchestral harp going up and down, it might be named GE001 and if it is synth Strings
stabbing like techno, they may call it GE002.
In effect, by playing a series of chords and choosing which GEs to use for each, both in real time, you can create arrangements very easily,
without having to sequence them on your keyboard or software. But Karma does not give you a way
to program your own GE's. You can think of a GE
as a loop that can be varied in real performance.
This was designed by long-time Korg engineer/musician Stephen Kay and they
boast it as a one-of-a-kind idea though
I believe it is a real time implementation of
generative algorithms. Check for programs from
Koan - www.sseyo.com. They have a program called Koan X which has chord-variable-loops called templates which I think what GEs are all too.
Also check a program called
Tangent www.randomtunes.com. It is an amazing parameter driven composition program.
WARNING: you might waste days with these without
making any music, just studying and getting distracted! I have!
But Karma adds the powerful sounds of Triton
and playability on a keyboard, so that is real
innovation.
I remember German keyboards in 91 having a
feature called Ad-Lib which did something like this.

Ad-Lib means 'as you wish'. In a music score, if you find the word ad lib above a phrase, you can play that part as you like. it is upto your own imagination.
BTW. Rjay, Sridhar.. How do you sync. Yamaha auto rhythm (as Master) & Cakewalk?
Thanx

On soundfont pitch shifting
---------------------------
UV,
Thanks for trying out soundfonts.
Every sound font is like a melodic instrument
so you can use pitch wheel controller commands or
pitch bend on the keyboard to raise or lower a pitch.
Try recording a simple phrase on the mridhangam and then insert a Wheel command using
cakewalk. You will see the difference.
The pitch range through which the Wheel
operates itself can be increased or decreased by
another MIDI controller command - must refer.

On syncing yamaha MIDI and cakewalk midi
----------------------------------------
Naveen
I have never tried this but cakewalk has a
menu or tool bar (MIDI timepiece or MIDI source)
which can be set to (self, external).
Let me know if you find it, or else I will dig
through that.

Thanks Rjay. I tried once. but it didn't work. I'll try one more time.
one more question.. suddenly my SB Live synth sounds different. It is not its usual sound. any idea? Is there any parameter in SB Live which controls the timbre of the patches?

I listened to your composition. 'Horror and Healing'. Interesting. I liked your idea..
If possible, add some more layers.

SBLive
------
Naveen,
SBLive has FM synth and wavetable options both still around. See your cakewalk midi out settings to see whether you have not accidentally switched to the FM synth option! Switch it back to wavetable.
Even with wavetable,
SBlive has a 2MB, 4MB and 8MB GM sound fonts.
Go to Soundfont manager and see which one has been chosen.
Thanks for listening to Horror. You are right,
it is too thin, probably my first composition!!
I will reconsider extending and expanding it.

Guys,
I can email my composition (midi file) that uses rjay's tabla. If interested, please send a request to my email. I think that RJAY's tabla tone is C#. I need to confirm it. You need to do appropriate pitch bend for the note you require.
RJAY,
Other day, I tried downloading the zip file (with Mridangam). I could not download it. I would love to use your Mridangam. I just realized that you have uploaded a new composition. I will get back to you.

Folks,
It always bothered me why there are no woman composers. I have never seen anyone in this forum too.
Who is stopping them?

Rjay sounds nice,
lead instrument can more flat sound, pan-flute or bottle blow sounds hollow, might be because of the reverb. For hollow sounds the playing technique is somewhat different.
Like try changing to rough lead guitar with some harmony backing... ,Needs more layers.
any way It is easy to give ideas :), will stop here, over all good job.
Midi sounds 120-127 have been put to use :)

Sridhar,
Thats a good question. I too do not know any Indian lady composer hosting a mp3 page. If you know someone, please let me know.

might be because,
Man created music to attract women....:)
....
btw: Advt world in the US is filled with lady composers. I have met few top women composers who do lots of documentry and advts.

Horror
-------
Comment, thanks for the comments!
The reverb is a midi reverb (I created two more
tracks and panned them left and right extremes
and added time shifts and down-ed their volumes.
And it killed the punch of the pan flute!!!
Actually, I bought an acoustic flute and played the lead in it and recorded it. It came out well
but due to tuning, it did not mix well with the rest, So I fell back to the MIDI pan flute. I will try to pitch correct it and add the live flute.
The sounds are called GS (extended GM). I had a maniacal laughter after the shooting. I removed it after my wife commented on my bad taste ;)

SBLive - controlling timbre
---------------------------
SBlive has quite a few parameters called NRPN
parameters for setting timbre parameters like
attack, release and even filtering the frequency.
I have not played much with it.

Thanks Rjay. I'll check the FM Synth and Wavetable option when I get back home. I suspect that.

Hi Aditya,
Flower show was good. I played 5 or 6 Classical pieces, couple of non classical and Rags. I also played 'Netru illaadha Maatram', 'Kanaamoochi Yenadaa' and 'Athaan Enathaan' songs. Americans are really impressed with Indian songs. Right now I do not have a TV tuner video card. or else I could have converted the video recording as Windows media file. You would have enjoyed my finger works.
If you are curious to know how the hell I look like, check my mp3 page. I uploaded one of my photos taken during the flower show.
:)

Fabulous Piece. Totally an inspirational music - "Wake up do something noble" - this is the feeling that it put me into. Selecting Hamsanandi reflects how the composers mind worked for this theme. I know you worked a lot on making it sound great but believe me this composition is much more bigger than just a KORG TRITON. Ofcourse the technology might have helped you in presenting it good - but indeed the composition and arrangement stands greater than the technology.

Aditya

aditya, thanks ....., i just wanted to share some keyboard skills i learnt over period of time.
Hope you guys can pick the styles like blowing, notes movement etc,
I used the a little bit reverb to get the width, apart form that I played all the parts live. :)

Flute lead is playing kalyani and background is in Hamsadhwani...Great Combi...I think this combi takes more attention than Triton - Shogun Combi...Great Keep it Going.

comment: now you have started to impress me :-)) (remember our emails a long time ago). this is an awesome piece. your style is still easily identifiable and this time it's a compliment. (some of the phrases were reminescent of "composer's breath".) very well done!
