From late ninities till now, there has never been a singer who has established him/herselfs, like our gems did, none of them have a perfect tamil accent, most of them can not sing at all, NONE of them are versatile, NONE of them have a good voice, except, Sujatha, Anuradha Sriram, Reena & Karthick, we have songs with silliest lyrics like "Apple penNe neyaroo, ice cream, blah blah", then we have "strawberry kanNe", where are we going from here, from bad to worse??

I think SPB's adi masam kathadikka song will beat Kuluvalile song. SPB can also sing like that.
Unless you have an alternate version of that song with SPB singing, you cannot pass judgment on how that song would be if he had sung. SPB has probably sung for so many complex tunes. So singing "Kuluvalile" would be a piece of cake. Kuluvalile song has as many lovers as it has haters. It is not liked by many people. People rarely make comments like, SPB should have sung, KJY should have sung, SJ should have sung like that.. unless the vocal is terribly bad. Not many people liked Kuluvalile song even some Rajini fans didn't like it. Because Rajini is always projected a macho hero. When someone like Udit Narayan lends his voice, suddenly its like a girl singing. It is totally out of place. "Kuluvalile" is not an off-beat tune like "Aadi masam" where SPB sings as a drunkard. "Theeradha Vialayuttu Pillai" song from Netrikkan is another example for how well SPB can be involved in a given song.
He sings like a womanizer which perfectly fits.

Awe...have you heard SPB singing "First rap song in Tamil" (that;s what this songs was marketed as in Chennai FM in 1994)..movie "Krishna" starring Prashanth....music - SA Rajkumar ?
The fault was not with SPB's voice...it was totally bad judgement by the MD. IMO, SPB shouldn't have accepted that song.

To continue,
SPB's voice lends a manly and respectable character to the lead hero of a film.
So some of the best songs of SPB are where his vocals are used in a sophisticated and subdued manner. There are many such examples in IR's and ARR's portfolio of songs.
Mainly in the 80s, SPB had to impart his happy and dance songs with his famous vocal effects...(the famous throaty alaps he makes).
In many instances, I am sure that he was not happy to make them but was forced to do so as the film director would have thought that it would add to the popularity of the song.
ARR songs rendered by SPB - you will find these 'throaty SPB alaps" missing.

I think SP Bala is over rated.
Listen to his private album called "Paadaatha Padalgal" and you will know what I mean.
Also, I think is is a joke to claim SP Bala's voice as manly, if UnniK and Hari's are girlish!
Manly voices of Sirgazhi & TMS have gone, gone away.
Anyway, I am happy ARR brought a wide range of voices into TFM that had always been dominated by two-three singers. It is a refreshing change.

>>Unnikrishnan, Hariharan, UnniMenon sometimes sing like girls. Their voice sound like girls voice.
There is no "Ganeer" in their voice despite the softness. They are sure no match for KJY and SPB.
Let UnniKrishnan and Hariharan sing songs like
Manidha Manidha ini un.. and Raga Deepam Thedum Neram.. We will compare then. Till such time UK and HH should be compared with Nithyasree and other female singers.>"Kuluvalile" is not an off-beat tune like "Aadi masam" where SPB sings as a drunkard. pls listen to songs like Shankaraparanam, kadhal Oviyum, all his HIndi songs 7 then comment on it, yes he had to sing in a soft voice for actors like prashanth & Co, that is what we call voice modulation to suit the hero :)

perfect example, I hate UDIT & CO big time, they are just good for the Hindi heroines :)
how about the song SPB rendered for surulirajan in the film "Vandi chakaram" starring sivakumar & saridha, I think the song is like this "Vaa macha vaa vunarai pettai", superb rendertion, just like a typical drunken person, wow! :)

Raghu, please understand that we have also heard SP Bala sing not only Sangakarabaranam but also his many TR classical songs. He is certainly not exclusive to you. After hearing him extensively, the above comment was made.
Why should I accept your claim that TMS is nasal when you won't accept my claim that SP Bala is girlish?
Please buy the original CD of Paadaatha Paadalgal, listen with an open mind and see how SP Bala could not match the original singers.
I agree that SP Bala is a good singer but placing him on a high pedestal and dismissing other equally talented singers is not healthy.

Neethipathi;
I have the CD u r talking about, Yes I agree songs like "Devan Kovil Maniosai", " Asaiyo alaimele" are really bad, compared to the originals, I agree with u 100%, In fact I opened a thread regarding this some 6 months ago, but songs like "Oru Naazh pothuma, Nilave enidam amaynghathe, Rasathi unnai, KanNe kalai Mane, ennai thalatta varuvala were excellent as orginal, or even better than original.
it is very difficult to judge the songs, when the songs had been sung by some one else originaly, as we are so much used to the original version, just like this can u imagine KJY or TMS singing "Shankaraparanam", pls answer this with a broad mind :)

Raghu
It is sacrilegious to say that SP Bala is better than Bala Murali Krishna in Oru naal pothumaa!!!
You are indeed a SP Bala fanatic. :)
I also find it hard to accept that SPB sang better than the original singers of Nilave ennidam nerungaathe, Rasathi unnai, Kanne kalai maane, etc.
However, I agree with you on the element of familiarity.

Mr.Azhikavandhan;
No, I am not 50, I am 25 for your info :)
Yes, I am Indeed a SPB fan not, a fanatic, pls read my postings carefuly, b4 any accussations, I have clearly said SPB's attempts at "Devan Kovil Maniosai", "Paavadai Thavaniyil", "Aasaiye alaimele" are PATHETIC, but the rest are damn good, do u know that there is a similarity amongs the voices of Dr.B.M.Krsihna & Dr.SPB?
Oh yes, one does not need to be 50 to talk about music, one should have passion, keen interst & talents to appreciate music :)
thanks you
