Many threads deal with the differences in IR and ARR songs. Those include differences in composing-style, tune, orchesration, rythm, chords, melody, catchy beats, bgm etc etc. Is there anything common in their music (strictly with respect to cine music, not in their personalities, not even private albums)?
Most of us agree that its the TFM, nowadays, gives better music(in all form) than MDs from other Indian Films. This prompted me to think in this area. Afterall Rahmaan is a successor of Illayaraja. If we can think about some common things in IR and his predecessor MSVs then why cannot about IR and ARR.

G.Kuppuswamy,
I and some of my friends very frequently cross yellow lines. It gives us so much thrill that we'd give anything for it.Yet we don't even have a scratch or haven't got any tickets or haven't caused anyone to swear at us.
An unrelated question:Are there any rules in music?I believe it is enough if it pleases your heart and mind.
Kiru,
Please bear with me here
Is mind which comes up with thoughts random?
I think the experiences which makes these thoughts are not.-)

A very interesting article I read on music. I strongly recommend you all read this
http://www.indianmelody.com/carnaticintro.htm
A GENTLE INTRODUCTION TO SOUTH INDIAN
CLASSICAL (KARNATIC) MUSIC
BY
Mahadevan Ramesh
The truth is within us - and we comprehend something by devising "empirical" laws...and if we find nature behaving to those laws, we find beauty in it....
Are there rules in music? Yes I think we define the laws, now once again you can break it...you made a yellow line, and everyone accepted not to cross it. If you occassionally stray to the other side, we make the "solid" yellow line a "dashed" yellow line....meaning we can use that to go to the other side to pass... BUT IMAGINE WHAT IF THERE WERE NO LINE!!!
Once again, I am learning the rules, but I always feel that the rules are within me...we seek to make something concrete yet abstact (apparently)...
Please bear with my philosophical tone, theres a lot to learn, and we are all going thro those experiences....

Appreciate the link. Will read it later. I am a fan of Ramesh Mahadevan's writings.
Re: "Please bear with my philosophical tone" - No no..again highly appreciated, atleast by me. I find it interesting.
A modelling agency in New York, receives too many photographs from aspiring models. It is difficult to go through them manually. So they have come up with a software program to short list the photographs. So is beauty in the eyes of the beholder or in algorithms implemented in software ?

I am very moody (who isn't?). Like everyone here, I am trying to just learn learn learn...but what simply scares me is when we talk about things we don't understand (especially a few art forms)... lack of knowledge nu sollalaam!!!!
kiru, this modelling agency has become a BUSINESS...so certain art forms has to DIE....
Well, let music not be a business but something to enjoy...
Eternal satisfaction...Thiyagaraja Kirtis and lots of WCM...all their composers were yearning to say something through their music...what is it??? I believe I should understand a few rules they played (and of course what they broke!) to understand them...lets all learn them and not scare a few people by saying things totally alien to them.

Once again coming back to the topic...
What is common to ARR and IR??? Seriously I dont know!! How can I even know??? People that really understood music will not even bring this topic for discussion becoz they know they will be talking to bunch of people that are not mature (meaning "experienced" - not the wrong meaning please)...

Swamiji,
The article surely gave some food for thought.
It is true,it is us who make the rules for oneself. As far as TFM is concerned,we have boundaries which is dictated by culture, tradition and previous music we have had.
breaking boundaries is a double-edged sword. An MD can break boundaries to create wonderful compositions or he can give us some junk.
I would like to analyze ARR and IR in this respect. My abstract thoughts,
ARR surely rebels against these boundaries and always(almost) has a need to create, going beyond the boundaries. He has a compulsion to explore beyond and see what he can create and he would like to understand people's reaction to it.
He is undisciplined and he sees the whole scene as wide and is not well aware of the boundaries that exist but revels in breaking them.Sometimes he shocks the music fans.
IR on the other hand, knows the boundaries well.He has a pretty good knowledge of how much he can deviate.Keeping this in mind,he created wonderful music which anyone can idetify with easily and immediately .He has a disciplined and intelligent approach to making music within those limits(boundaries and how much he can deviate).
There was a abrupt change in boundaries when ARR came in and the people's music taste deviated too.
I would love to hear anyone's opinions on this.

Music doesn't end with forming it in the head (u know who Iam talking about)...one needs to execute it properly...
Well...What is the change that ARR brought forth??? He showed us the way to "contemporary" music (or you can call it POP - meaning popular)...This includes good tonal sense (using instruments with the right "Color"...Giving total freedom to musicians to play their soul (and not strictly follow written notes)... new innovations in recording...adding different styles into his music (IR has done this too)...
But as a composition, I cannot understand what he wants to say...so I usually forget them...

swamji..since you are old, you are able to know
what a spoon is and what a beedi is.
So when arr gives a new model spoon
You are thinking it as beedi, it not arrs problem, it is your problem, come out of the loop listen to new form of music,
you think anything in form of stick is a beedi, that is because you have seen anthing other than beddi.
I know people who come a "kaienthi" bhavan (near brillant, ponday bazzar) and talk great about saravana bhavan, I tell them to take a hike to the place where you get the food you want, dont call this place bad because other is good.
"kaienthi" bhavan has loyal customers too.
Swamiji....learing music bla bla ellam dialouge utta pothadhu......you should also beready to learn.
