Hi,
what about the songs "aada vendum mayilae" (movie Arunagirinathar?) and "Thedi vandene pulli maanai" (madurai veeran, MGR starrer)? are they by any chance based on Bhairavi?

Peter pan,
Coming to your Bhairavi, Ram has given a list of many unwanted songs. The first song which struck me in Bhairavi is from PUChinnappa's Rathnakumari in which Bhanumathi sings a wonderful song Nee thayai purivaaye (I sang this songs with just passed away Sangita Kalanidhi Mani Krishnaswami in a concert in Jan 2001 at Sastri Hall, Ch-4). And then comes this Anipillai thennampillai(Seergazhi under SMS in Athisaya penn). Another fine piece is Vaa vaa ennodu vaa composed by T.S.RAghavendar for Yaagasaalai. The outstanding number in my opinion is our TMS singing for Sivaji in Harischandra Yaar poi solluvaar intha ezhai...composed by MasterVenu/KVM. Then only comes this AAdavendum mayiley. Don't you know there is a wonderful song composed by T.R. Pappa for the movie Yaar Jambulingam--aadi aadi asainthaal rendered by Bombay sisters Saroja Lalitha?
s0,you should understand that a particular raaga need not be handled by all MDs-the fact that IR has not handled Bhairavi is not a matter at all.Every MD has some favourite ragas and IR is a master of audava ragas mainly. You know something or can anyone tell any song of GR in Hindolam? I bet no.

Is the song "Ennai Enna Seidhaai" from "Ivann" purely based on Simmendra Madhyamam.
I was listening to the song y'day. I feel that there is a shift in raga during the 2nd charanam (Vanna Malarundu).
Music experts... please clarify.
And one more thing... the "Kannan" song in "Ivann" - Is it based on Sriranjani ragam ?

Mr. Sundar - what is your point? You cannot write off other numbers in Bhairavi just because you deem them to be "unwanted"!
Peter Pan, Bhairavi is one of those "heavy" classical ragas - this raga cannot be made "light" to suit all film songs. Unless the song requires a classical base, it may not be easy/a great idea to use Bhairavi for all situations. Most songs mentioned above by Mr. Sundar are pure classical Bhairavi.
"Unwanted Information": Infact in the Yenna solla pOgirai piece, Bhairavi interlude has Bhairavi in its purest form too! I felt that it was very well blended with the rest of the tune of that song!!
Ram - we have discussed a little bit about exceptions to the general rule - OR la irukkum - based on the feel of the raga - Hindolam is one such raga :-) Sindhu is the OR digging queen too :-) Help please!!!

KaNNan en naadha Ovium-Sriranjani,
enakinai yaar-Mayamalava gowLai,
Bhajanai seivom-harikambodhi(I guess)
appadi parkarathellam-Kedaram/Shankarabaranam(suddenly shoots to Vasanta/hamsanandhi)
Meltop-Shankarabaranam base I guess

Ram/IR/Isaipriyan,
"Apdi pakradhunna" from IVAN - It shoots to amruthavarshini in the second interlude. This is what i feel.
:-)IR,
Very right about the BHAIRAVI interludes in 'enna solla pogirai'. Liked the effort from ARR.

Ragapravaham Sundar,
Athu ennaga Coming to "your Bhairavi"...Bhairavi ngarathu ellarukkum sontham illaiyaa Peterpan-kku thevai patta Bhairavi, unwanted bhairavi nu eppadi classify paNNanum?....If such criterion does exist I'm more than eager to know what it is.I had accepted that I dint know any songs in Bhairavi and I had given a link to a site from which I had C & P-ed a list....10 song-la,1 song-aavathu Peter Pan-kku help aagatume ngara eNNathula I had posted....neways I dont c ur point...a few days back u are the one who said it is more challenging to compose a film song than a classical song...all the songs u mentioned where pure classical songs where as ARR has beautifully blended a hardcore classical raga into a light-tune...We respect ur knowledge and talent sir....I was seriosuly wondering what u intended to convey in ur posts...many a times we make a slip while typing and unintentionally we sound arrogant...it would be nice if u clarify what is "unwanted" and what is "wanted" so that we can all be happy that it was a genuine comment and not an arrogant remark.
Regards,
Ram

Hey Ram,
It was not an arrogant remark. Anyway I liked to go through your list once again but to no avail. The interlude in Santhana... (Kandukonden2)is purely accidental. ARR would not have even thought of Bhairavi when composing such a mediocre song. What has happened the song has a Kiravani base and that particular swara pattern is identical to both keeravani and bhairavi. That's all.

:-) When ppl like us can spot Bhairavi - am sure ARR would have known!!! it only takes a little bit of musical training/background!:-)
Now, coming to the notes in that interlude:
"pa dha1 sa ri2 ; - dha1 ga2 ri2 sa ni2 dha1 pa " tell me this is not Bhairavi!!! this is a classic Bhairavi pudi!!!! he does move on to keeravaNi smoothly..
IMHO - choosing bhairavi and blending it with keeravaNi was smart and not accidental!!!! - And the keeravaNI that we are all used to is not known to take the Ni2 note (kaisiki nishada note) - Just my thoughts!

hey all!today's bits-Natabhairavi by Ranjani and Gayathri-it seems nathabhairavi was first called nArireethigowlai.
And,there was another rAgam called "Aadi bhairavi"(NEone heard of this?) in which we have only dAsa's pada-s.
Ananda bhairavi,due to karuNA,shAnthi rasA,is a janyam of natabhairavi and not kharaharapriya.It also brings out shringAra,bhakthi rasA-s.
Ram,may be this wud answer your(or rather our)doubt-1 more criterion for a rAgA to be a janyam of a mELam is the rasA it brings out.(IR,righta?)
now,the songs-1)virubONi,2)sri valli devasenApate,3)mariveragathi-Anandabhairavi,4)sarasijanAbha-nAgagAndhAri,5)manasuloni-hindOLam,6)mokshamu-chAramathi,7)marukElarA-jayanthashri,8)rAgam tAnam pallavi in bhairavi,9)nArAyaNA-shuddha dhanyAsi,10)eppo varuvAro-jonpuri,11)tulsidAs bhajan in darbAri kAnadA.
Well, abt. the bhairavi piece in KK,even I think that it's very clear that it was intentionally put there.A nice, gradual shift-over from keeravaNi to bhairavi.(IR :-) )
BTW,IR,enna naisA enna OR-a paathu Ram-ku badhil solla solliteenga?Cud u pl. repeat what u had posted long back?(me not finding it in OR)

Thanks guys for the interesting exchange of factoids on Bhairavi in TFM. I guess because of its 'heavy' nature, it can't be blended easily with light music, unlike KeeravANi, Karaharapriya etc. And most songs that have been discussed fall under almost pure classical compositions.
Yes, the now-you-see-me-now-you-don't appearance of Bhairavi in the 'Sandhana Thendral' interlude was nice.
What's the raga of the Varusham 16 song, 'Pazhamudir chOlai EnakkAga thAn' (Yesudas, MD: IR)? Looks like a Harikambodhi janyam, comes close to Khamas. There's another excellent IR-Yesudas song in the film 'AvArampoo': 'Mandiram Dinam Mandiram' which also appears to be set in the same raga.
Any idea what the raga is? Thanks.

Yesterday's episode of Rudra Veenai...
Baba (our Rudra Veena man, a muslim saint from
the 18th century) is resting in a temple when
thieves barge in and start breaking the uNdiyal.
Baba plays Arabi on his veena and the mood of
the thieves changes. They quitely leave the temple
without doing their job.
Arabi... indha rAgaththai pAdinAlO, kEttAlO,

I read somewhere that the song udalukku uyir
kaaval (Movie: kAttu rOjA, MD: KVM, Singer: PBS)
is in Bairavi. Is it correct?
Sundhar:
You are yet to clearly say why Ram's list was
unwanted? Are you trying to say that the songs
he mentioned are not in Bairavi?
