Guys & gals, I have already put this stuff in one of the therads. But, owing to the poor response, I am starting it as a topic. I am sure if some of us get together, we can sponsor an album of say, IR's great BGM pieces or something like that. I really miss listening to them. I am sure we could raise the funds over a period of time.
Interested people, please respond in this thread. We will have to plan out the details also.

Kaushik/Suresh et al.
I am going to India day after tomorrow on vacation for 3 weeks. If time permits I will try to meet some regarding this there. Meanwhile, please continue the discussion. I suggest the following.
1) Design an album containing BGM from one or more movies (be specific here). It needs to have a theme, common concept (just a suggestion).
2) Design a album containings songs. Songs should not be too varied. Maybe they are all flute or violin oriented or something. All songs should be original works and not include any influence from contemporary composers (just my opinion, I want IR s originality to be exposed).
3) Design an album with instrumental versions of songs. Same criteria as songs. But orchestration/instruments need to be highlighted. So picking the appropriate musician for this should also be part of the design.
4) Suresh, please update your page with our marketing plans. All our productions will be hyped in the market as Collector's item and of audiophile quality. Special packaging with artwork, lyrics, history, photos and gold CD (if the cost is not too high).
5) We need volunteers for doing the artwork for the cover and sleeve notes. Any graphics people ??
I really would like to create a real CD cover/sleeve notes, put it in an empty jewel and use it while talking business with people. Can we do this is one-month time frame ?
6) Suresh and/or somebody should come up with short, marketing slogans in Tamil/English. (eg. something rhyming like thulliya, melliya et)
All the three production proposals should have a title, duration/# of songs.
This design work is important because it makes it easy to talk to people, including IR, about the project.
I can check email at kiru@zdnetmail.com during my vacation. Atleast I hope to.
Rajaram of TFM has agreed to help us out. He suggested starting a mailing list using http://www.coollist.com. I dont have time to do this now. If you guys think it is a good idea go ahead and follow it up.
(I am also thinking of bundling the CD with new music systems sold in India. I will try to broach the subject with some business people. Being in the software industry gives you ideas :-))

I'm making a start. This is for BGM.
The movies that have come up in this thread are as follows. The movies that I know and am sure, I have classified. Someone else will have to do the classification for the other movies.
LOVE THEMES
~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Mouna Raagam
2. Chinna Kannamma
3. Nenjathai Killathe
4. Mudhal Mariyadhai
5. Gitanjali
6. KM
Pathos
~~~~~~
1. Anjali
2. Gitanjali
3. Sigappu Rojaakkal
4. Mudhal Mariyadhai
5. Agninakshatram
Suspense
~~~~~~~~
1. Tik Tik Tik
Some movies were suggested by others. They are 1. Mogamul
2. Kaalapani
3. Nayakan
4. Salangai Oli
5. Raaja Paarvai
I would like the guys who mentioned this to refer the pieces they had in mind to the appropriate title.
As for the songs collection, there could be two methods of cllasification - one is based on themes like Love Themes, etc; or we could go for "Songs with great Flute", etc kind of collection. You can come up with suggestions as to what we could go for.
Regarding the song collection, I would prefer the "Flute collection", etc as there are no such collections in the market while there are collections like "Love themes", etc, although not remastered. But I'm not sure about its market potential as compared to the other one.
Hi,
TFM Page is sponsoring a mailing list for this project.
To subscribe, send a mail to ir-request@newtfmpage.com with
subscribe Ilayaraja
as the first line in the body of the mail.
(We have a severe restriction on the number of subscribers. So the subscription is moderated. )
I feel a mailing list would be a better medium to discuss the issues effectively and work on this project faster.
For the benefit of non-subscribers, updates on the discussions can be posted on this page periodically.
Comments welcome!
hi folks
back again..
kiruba:
will update the marketing plan and a few other stuff, in a couple of days at the most; i'll include a sequence of events so that people can track the exact progress of the project.
i'd love to be part of the graphics design, but being at the other end of the hemisphere, wouldnt want to commit for the 1-month timeframe.. however, i'll most definitely like to be involved in the design aspect once i'm back in india (mar'99)..
pl. lookup the page next week & let me know if u need anything else updated.. good luck with ur trip.
Rajaram, Ravi ...TFMers
thanks a ton for ur support!!
Raghav :
We could also include the title music from the Telugu film "Shiva" under Love themes. It is a long piece and shows the entire gamut of IR's skills from ROCK/POP to Baroque music.
we will need a separate section to put mogamull, agninakshatram and kaalapaani. may be call them as "moods" or "reflections" or "experiences" or "scintillations" or something. nayakan comes under pathos. raja paarvai will definitely come under love themes. about salangai oli , i am not sure what the mood of the theme is.
about the songs, i don't think we should categorise under any particular instrument. the songs could just be "gems of IR" just like the pancharatna krithis which are still a benchmark for composers to emulate.
my dream list of songs will be:
1. andhi mazhai pozhigirathu - raja paarvai.
2. endhan nenjil neengaatha - kalaignan.
3. idhu oru pon maalai pozhudhu - nizhalgal.
4. kaatril endhan geetham - johnny
5. pani vizhum malar vanam - ninaivellam nithya
6. ananda raagam - paneer pushpangal( i think). has excellent interludes.
7. poomaalaiye tholseravaa - pagal nilavu
8. sangeetha megam / thene thenpandi meene - udhaya geetham
9. adi aathaadi - kadalora kavithaigal.
10. poonkaatru pudhidhaanadhu - moonram pirai.
songs can be added or deleted from this list.
Guys, please consider including the following pieces in the BGM section of the album:
1. Title music of "Varusham 16" - this was also used as BGM in several scenes.
2. Title music of "Mouna Ragam" - later developed into a theme music for Revathy & Karthik. There is another great piece for Mohan & Revathy and several others for different sequences. The long violin piece during the last Karthik scene where he is chased by the police is also a notable one.
3. "Johnny" - (3-4 minute piece mainly played on piano) Comes right after Rajini talks about his b'day to Sri Devi. This piece is played quite often throughout the movie and also comes at the very end of the movie.
4. "Sindhu Bhairavi" - the flute & veena(??) piece which comes after the initial feud between Suhasini & Sivakumar during the katcheri. This is when she tries to apologize. You can't miss this piece as it comes quite often in the film with different orchestrations and tempos.
5. "Punnagai Mannan" - Several wonderful dance theme pieces have been composed for this film. The prominent one being the piano-violin piece which reflects Kamal's frustration, loneliness & his budding affection for Revathy. He forces her to dance with him during this piece. This again was developed into a theme piece for this pair in the following scenes. Even the music played during the suicide sequence(beg. of the film) was quite gripping.
All the above pieces will probably come under the theme, "Moods/Shades of Love", with a few exceptions. Well, that's all I remember for now. I'll write more later.
I just happen to read the 3rd part of the Illaiyarajah interview conducted by Shyam Shekar for the TTV website. Check out what he says when inquired about releasing an album with a collection of BGM pieces. Does this mean that this project is not feasible? I believe the link is: http://www.indolink.com/tamil/cinema/Specials/98/August/Raja3.htm
