OISG- Inga vandhuttu indha thathakkitta aasi vaangaama pogalaama :((
Btw, wasn't Tharaiyil Irangum Vimanangal Indhumathi's story? The Anni's role was so beautifully conceived- Ragini (Karthik's wife) did full justice to the role. Raghuvaran did well in Oru Manithanin Kathai too. Another good serial was Naanayam.
Prabhu- Penn had several interesting stories- Revathi as an Adarsh Vidyalaya student (Srividya's daughter)who feels her mother doesn't love her, Bhanupriya, with Gemini Ganesh as her father, Shobana and Raja who meet in the village, Amala who treats a boy (Master Anand) who loves Urulakkizhangu roast, Radhika who loses her husband, and the final story-Suhasini and Parthiban- Thinking back I feel Penn was a milestone in TV serial history.
bb- mudiyum pothu please consider for SOTD-'Oru Naal'- Devathai-among SJ's last songs for IR.

a.a.- Sorry I saw your post just now.
Now I am also in doubt if 'Maadhar thammai' was sung for SB or GG!
SB also acted in En Kanavar-1948.
All the songs in Bommai were written by Vidwan Lakshmanan.
Rani had some excellent songs. I'll list out what I can recall in the old songs page.

Digress:
mythila, I am not sure if 'Alai osai Seetha' was '89, most probably post '91.
Thanks guys for all the info, especially about the novelists whose novels were adapted into these great serials. I will try reading those books(despite my 40 wpm tamil-reading speed!).
Talking of excellence in screenplay/direction, my all-time favorite is The Wonder Years(Star Plus). I have transcripts of some 70-80 episodes and can send them to any interested TWY fans.
...End dig

Thanks for reminding 'idhu oru manidhanin kadhai'... If I remember correctly there were other short serials by mouli and cho which used to run for 2-4 weeks.. one called Amavasai IAS by mouli.. the other one was 'Saathirangal solvadhillai'( I think) by cho in which Cho comes as a brahmin and has a 'dork' son...and is fooled by others that he is not his real son... the change in attitude of Cho after this news is the core part of the story... Though we (rather s.v.sekhar & Crazy) termed tuesday 7.30 dramas as boring ones, there were a few good ones in them too..

if I am not wrong, the Suahsini-Parthiban story in "PEnn" was a rip-off from Ray's "Apur Sansar" (or was it "Aparajita"). IMO, it was a poor imitation.

OISG- Indha murai mannithen. :-)
bb- paarkaathey paarkaathey Popcarnai mattum paarkaathey. Saw it in a near empty theare in Sharjah few days back. I am yet to recover!
I think a healthy dose of Leony is needed to recover completely- I am off to his programme now in Dubai.
Anyone remember a one hour play 'En veedu en kanavar' (I am not sure of the name) in which Mnaorama gave an excellent performance? It was telecast on DD some Deepavali day (maybe 1985/86).
What about Hindi thodars like Hum Log and Buniyaad? My favorite was Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi on Fridays. Later Nukkad took its slot. Another favourite was Malgudi Days (for which L Vaidyanathan had composed the music)

I second Saravanan's proposal about considering "Oru naal" from Devadhai. Nowhere on the internet could I find this song. So, please do consider this song for SOTD.

BTW, any idea why is the movie named POPCARN ?
- From: Udhaya (@ 64.172.105.149)

pop signifies mainstream
carn signifies carnal
only people who saw the movie can justify it.

Udhaya- Great nominations.
Btw, Vijayabaskar-Mayangugiraal Oru Maadhu has been featured in SOTD, I think.
S-G were the MDs for Thangathiley Vairam. MBS was the MD for Eduppar Kai Pillai.
Also TRP was not the MD for Sparisam ( I don’t remember the MD’s name -he was someone new-SPB had a solo ‘Oodal siru minnal’).
That film by Deva is Unnudan (great songs like 'Vaanam tharaiyil vandhu','Kovama')

Thiru-Popcarn in named thus as the climax of the story evolves around a Pop Carnival!
Prabhu-YJHZ was definitely on Friday.
LV had done a brilliant job in Malgudi Days. The title song 'Thaana na thana' is memorable (I deliberately wrote this, before bb/MS question the relevance of Hindi serials in newtfmpage ;)

Saravanan,
Your list is exhaustive. Wow. Thanks for the corrections. I was confusing "Engamma Sabadham" with "Anbu Maegamae" by Vijayabasker for "Thangathilae Vairam". If it's not Sparisam, then I'm trying to think of the Shobana Ravi produced SVS movie from 80s with a fabulous SPB duet, "Un kaadhodu kaadhoru saedhi".
I've also been searching an SPB song from "Nangooram" for the longest time. I know you remember the name of that song, can you post it here.
You can add R.D.Burman to your list for "Ulagam Pirandhadhu Enakkaaga" which had one decent themmaangu, "Maangaattu mayilae nil nil nil".
Also, LP have been featured before, but "Mangai oru Gangai" had a phenomenal melody, "Kaalai thendralil eththanai sandhangal" by the softest voice of Dinesh. This singer deserved a few more songs at least. This song can be SOTD before the 1000th IR song gets picked.
