Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Indha nadiyin uyirnadi neengal! Thank you for a another memorable instalment...and please keep them coming!
All the songs from MMSP are gems to behold (be-hear?). VJs shift, with sensuous langour in the line "Mannavan Ungal Ponudalandro Indira Logam" - How deliciously nuanced with the slight elongation of the word "Indiralogam" A sweet slide into love and indiralogam indeed! (cf. by the same team Thangaththil Mugameduththu...another song with unforgettable singing moments.)
The film was too long by an hour, and packed with tons of jigna and jaal colours. Thank god for Oliyum Oliyum, we could watch the song now and again, without having to endure both, the hysteria and the histrionics. Small blessings be blessed again!
A song loop which you can get me out of:
I have no idea about the film or the MD, or if this is really the beginning or the song...All I know is that I caught myself humming this all day yesterday. I know it is a VJ number, but depend on your for the embelishments:
"...kangal pesum, inba iravugal ilamaikku sugam, moga veenai ragam padum azhage vaa..."
Any pointers?

Many thanks for the details. "Data"Saravanan-nnu kodiyaseekiraththil peyar vandhuvidum ungallukku!
Don't ask me why, today's loop song seems to be:
"Seppakulaththinil Kulippadhu Poova Penna Theriavillai..." I know it is a SPB-VJ duet MD (most likely) MSV. Is the film Theerpu?

I just thought I would do the right and "cultural" thing by giving you a title from our never-slow franchise of "Pattams R Us". Data pidikallenna, Ungalukku Pidiththadhaiye Pattamaga Thara Thayaar!
Yendha Madhiri Peyar Vendum, Sollungal...Plaque maker of one is at hand! :-)
Thank you once again for the song details. Your historic grasp of film footnotes and your meticulous detailing of VJs songs makes you a resource unlike any other in these parts. Please stay! :-)

Pattangal Kuvigindrana!
Something tells me i am gonna meet you shortly and expose to this forum that you are an eighty year old Tamil film fanatic well supported by a super computer.
Unmaigal duet,Sarithra Nayagan songs .....
On MMSP was it not Pa.NeelaKantan ,who directed the movie? The movie was a very different MGR movie with MGR trying to act,emote...Prob thats the reason it failed! Also i think Panthulu was never involved with this movie.
It is unthinkable to imagine KJY singing "thayagathin".TMS voice would ooze "Serukku", "Sudhanthira Vetkai".In the stanza "Theeratha puyal vantha " was a hint at Vedasanthur floods 1978.I request u to watch this scence.MN Nambiar ,frustrated at the usage of words, will say "Niruthhu".Watch out for Vadhiyar s expression.
Thendralil aadum - Karapgathu cholayil-MSV-MGRs "Charukesi" obsession continues. MGR would look terrific in this song. Also some great tabla work in this song. One has to fall in love with VJ s voice in this song.
The Dvijavanthi usage possibly the sole instance in TFM is a great song.
But i was persoanlly disppointed at "Veera Magan" which did not jell well with the period setting.

Saravanan,
MMSP was an unusually short MGR film! (I think only 12 reels compared to the much longer 'rajaa-raaNi' films of yester years!) It was such a slipshod work that viewers rejected it outright! (A friend of mine said he saw a bicycle in a corner of the frame in one scene!)
Some of the plus points were:
Similar to 'adimaippeN', MGR had many scenes shot in the palaces of Jaipur.
And of course, excellent songs!
In a recent 'podhigai' interview, Kavignar Muthulingam said he only insisted on TMS for 'thaayagaththin' as against MGR's first choice of KJY.
One more MGR film that got canned because he became the CM was 'makkaL en pakkam'. Many years later, when Satyaraj had a film made in this name, it was said that MGR was upset: 'makkaL en pakkam allavaa irukkaanga? ivar ippadi pEr vaikkalaamaa?' types! Of course, I am not including ' kizhakkaafricaavil raaju' and ' unnai vida maattEn' which did not get anywhere beyond the names!!! (UVM had a few songs composed by IR I am told!!)
OISG,
As far as I know, 'thenRalil aadum' is based on 'aarabhi' and not 'chaarukEsi'. Usage of 'aalilai', 'mEkalai' etc.,('aalilaiyin OraththilE, mEkalaiyin naadhaththilE') are in line with the lyrics of many of earlier MGR songs!

Awaz Dey Kahan Hai...? nnu paduvadharkkumun your voice was heard today!
Was MMSP only 12 reels? That seems a bit short for an opus...Why do I have the feeling that the film dragged and sputtered and dragged some more? Panirendum PERIYA reel-aa?
Wasn't En Raththaththin Raththame also a shelved MGR film title? Or was that just a repeated line in all his speeches?
It would be a coup if one could locate and upload the IR songs for UVM!

Does anyone have the following songs/ albums:
1)Vani jairam and Yesudas together singing paens to Lord Ayyappa
2)Vani Jairam's songs in Balanagamma.
My search for these songs seems never-ending. Many months ago, on a trip to Chennai/ Trichy, I had enquired about these in many music shops, some of which are well-known in those cities. And those guys stared at me as if they have never heard of the existence of these albums!

NeelD, I am with av in requesting you the BalaNagamma songs. I see that you have added some incredibly rare songs in your site. Great work again.
The song "Ponvanna veenai" from Chithira Chevvaanam, is it by IR or someone else? Raajangahm lists the film under IR's name although Iam not quite sure about it.

If I may proxy for NeelD...Chiththira Chevvaanam is by MSV. Ponvanna Veenai Poonthendral Ragam is another fine solo by the VJ/MSV team.
Regarding Raajngahm:
The site (is it the official IR site??) to be sorely lacking in verification of credits/details. They really could use a meticulous archivist/historian a la Saravanan. It could make all the difference between "just" resource and "authoritative" resource. Doesn't the same site have a rather short audio clip of VJs Balanagamma song?

Naaz, thanks for the info. When I listened to the song I found it to have more MSV touches(in the charanam's tune) and had doubts about IR being the MD.
Yes, Raajangahm has some pretty rare audio clips where I listened to these songs first. But they have not been very active in updating info these past few months. Even the IR discography has been updated only till 2000.

Karpagathu cholayil stanza is certainly charukesi although the pallavi is in arabhi pattern.
Also i had MGR s "Nallathai Nadu ketkum" paatu puthagam when i was in school. It had 2 songs by SPB and i remember "Vanna Pooncholai".The other one was by TMS.
AFAIK it was "AAlapiranthavaL" by Manian s Uthayam productions starring Jayalalitha had music by IR.This movie too was shelved.UVM ,R u sure?
could someobody get me the ragam of "Ponmanachemmalai" by VJ?A very unique pallavi with VJ singing with a pause between words and TMS doing a chain.

Naaz,
We missed you all these months! Welcome back! I am particularly fond of your flowery language!
OISG,
In some other thread, I had written a few lines about UVK! A film with a hard hitting title,it was planned to be shot and released very fast (in the six months that MGR had between Parliament and TN Assembly elections in 1980, when his first Govt. had been dislodged!). That was never to be, but for the songs that were said to have been recorded by IR! Years later, NTR somehow managed to do something similar by producing and releasing a quickie called ' Vishwamitra' with Meenakshi Seshadri!
Of course, after MGR's demise in 1987, a videotape called 'kaalaththai venRavan' was released with a few clippings from some of his films, along with shots from his funeral, with SPB singing ' raththaththin raththangaL ingE azhugudhammaa!'

I had made a commitment to Saravanan...and I keep my vows! I am just another poster in these forums...it is dedicated people like youself, OISG, Saravanan, Kaumudi, Susi, just to name a few, that truly inspire me. You have sustained this thread thru its ups and downs and ups again!
Thank you for your welcome and gone-straight-to-the-head compliment. I write the way I speak (usually) and I am glad for the appreciation. I can only hope that the words AND the thoughts merge to provide some thought-provoking engagement. That is a standard I set for myself :-)
Regarding MGRs demise: VJ sang "Idhayam Oru Kovil" for IR (and perhaps her only song for a MR film,) and though the song was recorded after the audio cassette was released, it was the background song during the "funeral" reel which preceded the main feature. Once again, this VJ song is now lost to all her listeners. I'd give anything to listen to the VJ version. Does anybody have the wherewithal to make this happen?

OISG:)))
I still think MMSP carried MGR's name as director.
Regarding 'Thayagathin sudhanthiramey'- I don't remember watching the song- but I love the place where the tempo suddenly changes in 'Veeram undu, vetri undu, vilayaadum kalam ingey undu, vaa vaa en thozha'.
Yes, the song wouldn't have been the same had KJY sung it. Though KJY managed 'Anbukku naan adimai' and 'Ondre kumal endru paaduvom',- 'Naalai ulagai aala vendum' would have sounded more convincing in TMS's voice.
CV- There was a film called 'Unnai Vida Matten', which came out in 1985. I think it was by Netaji.
Naaz- You are perfectly right about C V- his posts are invaluable, and his recall of titbits and pertinent trivia is simply amazing. I am still in awe of his recalling even a poster war (Arangretram vs.Marupiravi- I forget which thread this was in)
Btw- this is the first time I'm hearing of VJ singing 'Idhayam Oru Kovil'! The film's titles never mentioned her name, nor was the song there in the film. Was her version used for MGR's funeral procession? What is the connection?
