Honestly I think India doesn't deserve someone talented and intelligent like AR Rahman. I think compared to his group of fans, there are double the amount of Deva and Raja fans. (Read that again, I'm not saying that there are no ARR Indian appreciators or fans)
Is it because Indians are unable to understand his style of music? Is it because deep inside, ghana and dhampakoothu are what they want?
If tomorrow, ARR decides to give up India music, I will be happy because he gets the recogniztion he deserves overseas and can concentrate on his western projects more. Read Andrew Lloyd Webber and Michael Jackson.

Flifo,
athu correct thaan :-) when i was madras i fought my best and insited that they use auto meters to charge me! enna use :-)
In my college days i travelled from mabalam to tambaram by train .. i have fought innumerous times against people who smoke in train!
people i hate in madras
1) auto drivers- menace to the society
2) traffic police
3) fish cart drivers
4) cyclists who drive faster tha areoplane
5) lorry drivers who dont cover the mud they carry on the lorry!
6) All forms of cow on street
7) TVS 50
1) 3) 4) and 7) are the major cause of all traffic problems they shld be banned in most roads..
recollect this scene... the onward traffic is blocked in a road (lets say doraiswamy rd..:-) ) the drivers get frustrated on drive on the opposite side of the road which is empty because there is no downward traffic at the moment. seeing some drivers do that all other drivers occupy the other side of the road now..
the road now resembles a 1 way road with all onward traffic on both sides of the road thereby making it impoosible for the downward traffic to flow and hence worsening the situation....
this is the most common sight in madras...for the past 10 years... and no one has thought anything to put any sense into 1) 3) 4) and 7)

Other than being a economicaly backward nation, we dont lack in art & culture. No individual can over do the contry.

"i gather ur experience with documentations and land records in India is not vast"
I can get judgemental with you as well, but suffice to say that I have long experience in the NGO sector, and didn't run away like you after 'attempting to influence auto drivers' attitude towards meters' that is part of social service folklore.
I've travelled more villages in a month than you've ever done in a lifetime, so I can speak with the benefit of experiencing life in the countryside over many, many years
Let me also add that I've lived in Australia for a few years and have travelled widely elsewhere on work, so you can concede that I speak after I've walked the green grass on the other side
The troubles plaguing our country are all well documented and experienced; we don't require you and sundry ilk living in USA to illuminate our lives with your disgust
You are also part of the problem that exists today in India. If you didn't have the stomach to confront it, or you found better ways to meet your stated purpose in life to make money/professional glory, so be it.
We're all happy living here amidst the dust, chaos, corruption, poverty, disease... If you have a problem understanding that, please do us a favour.. Don't write such trite stuff, you sound too full of yourself

suresh ,
u r nonsense.. read the posts fully b4 u start commenting.. and ur experience in villages still may not be better than mine..
and also stop this banal crap about " u go to USA..u run away... we like living in dirt.. because its our home.. and we love it bla bla..."
this is what is crap!
and dont try and stereo type me when we come up with constructive critisism...
since india is YOUR home ( i suppose we are different according to u) and u r happy with it being dirty.. and u shut up people like us with ur "this guy ran away from india" crap.. so its helluva good attitude for a common man for his country...
oh! come on feel free to thro in ur credit card and customer service stereo types on immigrant indians and compete the trash u began!

Alot of migrants who left India went to find better jobs in order to support their dirt poor families back in their homeland. They have reputations for single-handedly supporting their whole bunch of relatives to pay exhorbitant dowries to get married, get degrees, bribe their ways into getting jobs, refurbish their village temples and schools, etc. I know of many who turn in majority of their pay packets back home while living stringent lifestyles and working like dogs. So don't start all this 'run away' bullcrap here please.

Suresh:
Don't waste your India-patriotism energy in this forum. You will all that energy in doing your work.
We were talking about stats. related to divorce rate, teen pregnancy, child molestation etc. etc. not whether you are able to recover documents from Indian govt. offices. You may be right, India has good documentation - how much of that is relevant to the subject we were talking about? Huh? Birth certificate of my great grandfather, my left foot!
If you think you alone are feeling and working towards a better India, you are wrong. You may have worked with NGOs, walked along paddy fields, and educated villagers - that does not give you the right to call names at every NRI!

illai if suresh who lives in india critisizes madras for its apparent disregard to comman mans convenience then it is allright!
but its not allright for me to say the same thing.. it WAS allright for me to say it some years b4 but not NOW. wonder where i got disqualified.
Its okay for people who move to madras from villages to critisize their home town.. they say cooly "kandramanikkam" is my home town I dont even know if its in the map now.
Its okay for Madrasis who move to banglore or bombay to trash madras and call it land of cows and talk with cousins in hindi itself and feel ashamed to talk in tamils...
but hey! take a step out of the country and you loose all qualification to even breathe a word!
whereas in Bay area the movie collection for alaipayuthey will exceed the total collection of madras...
huh! what is this?

Guys..guys hold the fire. Facts are facts still NRIs (including me) should talk with a little bit more sensitivity in this forum frequented by people from India as well as other countries. My parents are visiting me here in California from Villupuram. Sometimes they get offended when I say somethings about India. Note, we all identify with our land much more than we accept. Also note that whatever reasons we are here (I mean outside India) we still have evaded some responsibility (note I am including myself in the list). We need to fight it out, people, in our own country. If we leave the country (and many of us are talented/educated) for 'better opportunities', how do you think our country is going to improve ? Because of this, I dont mind being, at the receiving end of Suresh's outburst.
And Bharat and Saketh, you guys are full of energy and enthusiasm. You are aghast at how bad things are in our country. Nothing wrong. But, my sincere advice, is, young (I am guessing :) )people like you guys need to spend more time understanding our government, culture, social structure etc. India is a very complicated society. We have had a very long past and have also baggages of this past.
US is comparatively a young country, a country built from scratch with energetic, enthusiastic and hardworking people. India cannot be easily compared. We can only learn from them of what makes a successfull society.

kiru,
you are correct in many ways!
This is how i explain people leaving the country!.. India is already overflowing with people about 60,000 Engineers/ year from madras itself. More than 100,000 graduates a year in tamil nadu. The whole of India should be a whopping 10 lacs...
compare this to opportunities available in the country! what will happen to the givt if 20 lac people over 2 years get together and pressurise it to create employment opportunities..
what is the most ideal thing to happen to a country with bulging population and that too a population with reasonable intellect!
well! the best thing is some of the excess baggage being shifted to another country... agreed its some brain drain but with only 2 lac in every lac people moving out india still has plenty of human intellect resources to extract its needs from!
the country encourages people leaving it! thats the nature and the ONLY way our govt can stop many issues.
what does an NRI do after coming out
1) pumps in NRI money into india
2) most marry a Indian citizen and bring them here also (which makes it 2 people for every guy that jumps the ship)
3) gives birth to kids in america(thereby reduing incredibly the birth rate in india)
this is a classic case of balancing of population thats happening in indias favor!
we NRI's are excess baggage india can do w/o. This is the employment opportunity India has offered us. So in a way NRI's ARE doing a service to a country by just being away from it!
so in this perspective only India encourages people to leave its shores! If it was a morally bankrupt thing why should a govt encourage it!
1 more thing US is not a charitable institution who is doing a favor (although intrnl law states that developed countries must have programmes for others) it has a good intellection population who are burgeoning with ideas but unfortunately no one to execute them!
so India exports Labourers (remember the work visa name) to US to execute ideas essentially and predominantly invented by americans.. (the few that the indians get to invent are owned by america by offering them citizenship)
So change the perspective u look at the situation.... we are not people who shirkked responsibility and ran away... we were indirectly jettisoned of a huge ship to enable the survival of the ship...
infact the NRI investment is a huge bonus out of this people jettisoning whihc the govt scarcely expected!
