I know IR has used Trumpets and Sax in some songs just as a follow instrument.
Examples:
1.Appapa Thithikum undhan from "Jappanil kalyanaraman"
2.Ada Machan Machan from "Chinna Veedu"
3.Mandram Vantha from "Mouna Raagam"
4. Vaanam Enna Kizh irukku from "Vetri Vizha"
These are classical Trumpets or Sax pieces.
Please give your ideas about any other songs.
Of course Kadri's Sax from Anjali (that got ARR's name)
Thanks

It seems to me that there are a couple of scales for which IR favours the brass section:
one is Sarasangi, for instance the poonthottam song Anand named above. There is some wonderful horn work in the song Meenamma meenamma from Rajadhi raja and some sax sections in maharajanoda from sathi leelavathi.
the other is vakulabharanam (14th mela, seems to be F minor or something; in any case I associate Spanish music with this scale.)
the songs that come to mind here are: aadi varattum from Rajakumaran, mannar mannane from Mannan.
If I am not mistaken, IR is the only MD to use French horn; he used it (and clarinet) well in Guru, though I wish he had avoided all the modern instruments in these songs...

Coming to the topic, "Vaalibamae Vaa Vaa" was another trumpet-prominent song by IR. Also, the song "Aasai engae" (the first song from Poo Vizhi Vaasalilae) has some good horns in it.
There was an obscure song from an 80s-B-movie, MD-ed by L.Vaidhyanathan (not 7aavathu manithan) which had some great Sax in it. Anyone remember?

Guys,
Some more songs
1. Salai oram solai indru vaadum - Payanangal Mudivathillai. The opening piece entirely of Trumpets was quite good.
2. Appane Appane pullaiyaar appane - Annai Or Aalaiyam. Isnt it true that in songs about elephants or atleast that figure elephants have to include trumpets.
3. Unnai Arindhal nee - Vettaikaaran. KVM masterpiece had some smooth interludes.
Srinath: I finished my college in 94. And all I had said happened, as u had pointed out pre 94 days. I distinctly remeber these two college groups used this song many times. A small digression from the topic, if Iam right the song "Sangeedha megam" infact was almost a standard for most of the college groups and I remember one lead singer of the Anna univ. team who is the best among all those Ive heard( college groups, I mean ).

The song "poomazhai thoovi vasandhangal vaazhtha" from an old MGR movie had an entire band's horn section in its interludes.
-"nenjam paadum" from "Nenjil or Raagam" by T.Raajendar had trumpet music in it.
-"Gowrikku" and "Poadu Thaalam poadu" from "Pudhu Vasandham" had trumpets in them.

Hi,
Srinath:
Have to played the trumpet piece in Engeyoum epodhum, unakena mela nindrai, enbame in idyakani, atho antha parvai pole, partha nayabaam illaiyo, yadum ure yavarum keler...
Msv has done many excellent trumpet scores..
I have a opinion here- msv trumpet scores are more complicated than Raja's., Raja scores is more of a brass section arrangement.

Srikanth:
Apparently Chicago suits you, you seem refreshed ! Engeyum Eppodum was also played in a lot of culturals, but the keyboardist (I can see you grinning :-))) is the one who used to play all the sax pieces. I always thought that the sax tone in keyboards sounded much better closer to the original instrument than any other tone.
Stanley Medical College had a saxophonist who also played the keyboard and the guitar. But somehow, he appeared to be a little short on confidence (though he was pretty good) while playing the sax.
As for the other songs you've metioned, it's been quite a while since I have listened to them and so I don't remember most of the pieces. Unnakenna Mela Ninrai had a cacophonic percussion section, in the 3rd BGM (2nd interlude), I think. It stood out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the song - that's how I first found out that it wasn't an IR song ;-))
Note for note, probably some of MSV's compositions were more complex than IR's. But I prefer to think that IR used the sax as it was intended to be used.
Another song with a prominent sax piece - "Kannan Vandu Paaduginran". I think I have mentioned this song 5 or 6 times so far in the DF. I better stop before everybody begins to think that it is the only song that I know of :-))))

Unkenna mela : Basically set to sindhu Bhairavi,
later changes to Kalayanavasantham
---The trumpet pices are set to this ragam.
Kalayanavasantham - How many songs raja has done in this ragam!...just a few.,MSV has many kalayanavasantham. The percussion is little complicated, it is hard to follow, secondly recording is not so good.

Guys....
just to lighten the heated argument i wud like to share with all u guys this piece.
It was February 1997. I was going back to my work at delhi, after a short vacation at madras. My next coupe was occupied by two musicians. Yes u guessed one of them right it was Kadhri sir. and he was accompanied by Violinst Kaniyakumari. I was too happy to see them and to travel with them. So the long journey started from madras central. Slept early that night and then the next morning started the conversation slowly with KG(kadhri). Found out they are going for some concert at bhopal. Unfortunate for me they are not heading towards 'thalainagaram'.
That night when they got down at the bhopal junction, they were helped by the pantrycar boys.
one of them who, i think ,was carrying kadhri's petti asked him "neenga vathiam vaasipeengala sir"
politely he said "amaampa". then he asked "tv la vaasipeengala sir?". for that also he said "appappa vaasippen" by the time he was ready with his next question "Naan ungala paarthathae illai sir". KG had to giveup at this point. he asked him "duet padathila prabhu oru vaathiam vaasipaarla atha vasichathu naanthaan". our man looked sort of convinced. I was wondering how such a great person has to identify himself in such a way to reach the common man. cinema ivalavu vazhimaiyanadha?
I still preserve his autograph.
:))))
Guys i thot KG was from madras. But the way he talks tamil is totally different. is he from kerala or from karnataka?
