Compare and Contrast IR's musical style(s), especially with the BGM tracks, with those of composers of Hollywood, viz., Maurice Jarre, Henri Mancini, John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernstein, John Barry, Alan Sylvistri, Danny Elfman, Ennio Morricone, Howard Shore, Hans Zimmer, James Horner and so on

I went ahead and mixed a track containing three Music legends. Beethoven and the other two, contemporaries John Williams and Ilayaraja.
The tracks i choose were Beethoven’s Moonlight sonata, John Williams Forrest Gump title track and starting music of the song Nee Partha of Hey Ram. I was amused by the pattern. The music instrument which dominates all these tracks is Piano but the subtleties in the three tracks make it distinctly original.
Hear it and at once you will say IR's music is global...
The detail of the track ( i named it as Legends!!) are as follows
From 0.00 to 0.16 its Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. From 0.16 to 2.40, its John Williams Forrest Gump(What a magnificent track. Absolutely Brilliant) and from 2:40 to the end its our very own Ilayaraja. (Whats he doing in India b y the way?)
Download it from http://www.coolgoose.com/music/song.php?id=116281 and let me know what you think of it.

Osho, that was good work ... 'Legends' was amazing to hear ... Now I too wonder What Ilayaraja is doing in India. This man has not got the recognition due to him in the international arena.

Dmitry Shostakovich was a composer par excellence. Born in communist Russia (erstwhile Soviet Union) in 1906 he came to the symphonic scenario after the communist revolution of 1917. However, his musical journey suffered further at the hands of Stalin. The official claim was that the music which shostakovich produced were chaos. Official condemnation soon followed. Its only later after Stalin’s death in 1953 that Shostakovich released some of his works. His life ended in 1975.
Dmitry Shostakovich's music represents the personal trauma he underwent during the oppressive regime and he made no attempts to suppress it. His music clearly showed it. His symphonies to me are intense, dark and compelling.
I was listening to Sundari Kannal Oru seithi from Dalapathy and at once knew that both IR and the former has some pattern match for melancholic situations (Listen to Dmitri's 5th symphony) and the dalapathi song. Later i stumbled across two of the striking compositions. One Chamber of strings Dmitry Shostakovich and the other Marupadiyum title (?) track. Do they belong to the same pattern (Finite Automata as Music_lover would call it? sincerely i wish i know, but its my intuition that tells me it is . Both these tracks are melancholic and i seriously :) warn folks not to hear the track if you are not interested in wasting a hour or so with a lump in the throat kinda feeling. Hear the marupadiyum track and i have no words to explain how symphonic the track is.
My second mix of legends, this time called as "StringParady". Uploaded to coolgoose and can be downloaded from http://www.coolgoose.com/go/song?id=116485
And also let me know that I’m not going overboard in mixing these tracks.

Osho - bang on target
The layering of emotions in both the pieces seem to be in a similar pattern - but, the way the emotions are brought out differs subtly
in Dmitri's work, the emotions seem to IMPLODE - collapsing one upon the other, trying to come out, but never seeming to make them - makes me identify with the helplessness of the composer's mindset (!)
in IR's work, the emotions seem to EXPLODE - the frustration and agony just build opon one another until the lid gets blown off, and they are out in the open in the crescendo strings portion - more to do with the (movie) character's mindset rather than that of the composer - even this shows that IR always caters to the needs/requirements of a movie/situation, doesn't it ?

Portraying the trauma, chaos , danger THRU a song
could be very dicey lest the song becomes jarring to the listeners.BUt IR has come out with flying colors in many songs . Take
1. "Illamai thullum " song in Paadum paravaigal- Gosh!!! Just listen to the interludes where u can feel the looming crisis.
2."Yengirundho ilam kuyilin" (Bramha)- Here again, the interlude music conveys the emotional unheaval undergone by the protagonist.
4. Yaar veetu roja(Idhayakovil) , paadavaa un paadalai (Naan paadum paadal),"Mannavaa mannavaa"(Walter vetrivel) -
Look how the innocuously pleasant start progressively gets cataclysmic towards the end. The beauty is that these songs have not compromised on the melody aspect.

Add this one too the 'MYTHILA's list!
the happy and sad versions of 'pOvOmA oorhOlam' in Chinnathambi. Feel the vibrant energy in the happy one and the patos mood in the sad one.
Amazing!

On multiple hearings of the "Feather Theme" of Forrest gump by Alan Silvistri i was wondering how a Composer can enhance the visual and engross it forever in our hearts. Those who have seen the
Movie will definitely know how the feather plays a part in the movie. The title is a treat and the
theme music captures the mind of the protagonist, in this case Forrest played by Tom Hanks (Wasn’t h
Brilliant!).
The music itself has to portray the emotions. It has to show the uncomplicated mind of
forrest. The opening music of the track clearly emphasis this. It gradually tells you the relationship of forrest with his mother and then the track moves further to show his complicated relationship with his girl Friend "genny". I was wondering if any indian movie has this kind of theme and at once "Anjali" struck like a ightning. This film by Mani Ratnam also portrays the uncomplicated mind of a beautiful child. I
was amazed how both the composers have composed the scores with astounding effect.
The irony is that both the composers weren’t recognized for their respective efforts. Alan Silvestri by Academy (He didn’t even receive Nomination) and the Indian Government for IR.
Please hear the track titled “Beautiful Mind” where i have carefully mixed both Feather Theme by Silivistri and Anjali BGM track and find it absolutely brilliant to hear.
Download the theme from http://www.coolgoose.com/go/song?id=116679
Giving a thought on the same lines, i was also thinking about the E.T Flying theme and the Vegam vegam Song from Anjali. The picturisation was a definite influence of Spielberg (or can i say a copy?) and how a composer(IR) didnt fall into the trap of being influenced by Williams compelling score. I was listening to both the tracks again and again and both induced a feeling of space floating. But there is no trace of influence in the IR score of williams. Yet both tracks give you the same feeling.
For hollywood it took two brilliant composers to compose tracks for two different films to produce sound tracks that will remain forever in the hearts of music lovers across the globe.
For us, it took IR to compose the tracks in a single movie that in the annals of Indian film history wont be reproduced or even attempted to come as close as what IR has attempted.
I have attempted to mix a small part of the E.T Flying theme with the Vegam Vegam song. Listen to the track named “Galaxy” which can be downloaded from http://www.coolgoose.com/go/song?id=116680 . Listen, how in IR’s work the violin pushes you higher and higher inducing a feeling of floating.

After hearing the "Beautiful Mind" i guess the following details would be of great significance.
Anjali (Release date:-) 1990
Forest Gump (Release date :-) 1994
I guess you all know what i am implying -:)
