Hope it works.
There is hyphen '_' between ilaiyaraaja and ragam

I've looked at the notation for some songs at Chidam's, and I found a few ARR songs in raagam Vakhulabharanam (one of the more erotic raagas) with few or no anya swaras. However, I don't know that any film MDs have tried any songs in the prathi madhyamam of this raagam.

O Prema (Aswamedham) and Ennenno andaalu (Chanti) are also in keeravani ragam. See if you can identify these two songs with the Anveshana song.

purv - that's interesting. Which of ARR's songs is in Vakulabarnam? Please list. Thanks.
As for Namanarayani, I can't think of any, although I'd be sure that IR would have done something in that Raga. However, Panthivarali (Just one note different from Namanarayani) is often used in TFM!

Kaumudi Thanks. I do see the similarity, both songs are at a much slower tempo than the anveshana song.
I cannot write the notes as I am not that familiar with ragas. Though I might be able to recognize more keeravani's from your input :>
Thanks

Sundhari from Kanatthil Muthamittal doesn't seem to have the Vakulabarman Swaras! Unless we are discussing another song! Could you please tell me where they appear in the song? Help!!!! ;) Vakulabarnam is known as the Harmonic Minor Inverse, which could be why you feel that the Sundari song is in it.
I would say the the song Vaarthai thavari vittay from Sethu is in Vakulabarnam. Experts pls confirm.
The song clearly has a Prathi Madhyamam, IMO. Hemavathi(58) is the Prathi Madhyamam Raga of Karaharapriya(22). Hemavathi sounds a bit like Dharmavathi(59), it is the very next in the Melakartha list. But the Hemavathi scale is the Minor Scale.
The Krithi, "Ennai Kathu" by Papanasanam Sivan is in Hemavathi.
It is a Raga close to Vachaspathi (64) also, in sound and paryogams - the Gandharam is different. The Papanasam Sivam Krithi, Parath Para is in the Vachaspathi.
IR has done the very classical song, Manam Pola Maangalyam from Pudhu Patti Ponni Thaayi in the Raga Hemavathi.
The other Hemavathi film song that springs to mind is Hey Shabba, an old song, I think by Vidhyasaagar, which has the Middle Eastern tones, vry much on the minor scale nuances.
The Ottagatha Kattiko song, by ARR, also has touches of Heavathi, although, it is predominantly in Dharmavathi.

on: Sun Jun 15 11:17:33 EDT 2003
"engirunthu vanthayada" - predominantly in Behag IMO
I think U R speaking of the Vanaville song from Ramana, by Hariharan and also Sadhana - it's in Dharmavathi.

I think IR has used Vakulabharanam in a tussle like situation
Samples
1. Mannar mannane enakku - Mannan
2. Aadi virattum mayila kaalai - Raajakumaran
3. Oru nilavum malarum - Naan oru thozhilali
4. Vanithamani - Vikram.I can see traces of Chakravaaham too.
5. En jodi manja kuruvi???- Vikram

Just curious [now, any of you can tell me if this posting is at all irrelevant to the thread], are there any sad songs in raagam Hamsadhwani in tfm? [Or is that considered abnormal behavior?]
- From: Raj (@ 206.97.63.112)
on: Tue Jun 24 00:17:34 EDT 2003
purv: If my memory serves me right, Hamsadhwani is considered to be a raaga depicting 'veeram'(bravery/heroism) like Ataana. I don't think you will find any sad song in that raaga, unless the MDs ignore the 'rasam' attributed to the raagas.

Aaha! Now I have yet another idea for one of my experiments as a music director! Thanks for the input, Raj sir. :-)
Yeah, it seems it's a whale easier to compose a pathos song in Mohanam than to compose one in Hamsadhwani.
Regards,
purv

purv: You are welcome and good luck. Just a word of caution as discussed by M.M.Dandapani Desikar in one of his concert recordings. As you may know he set the tune for Bharathidasan's 'Thunbam Nergaiyil' in either Velaikkari or Or iravu. He chose Desh. But, he discusses Atana as the raga and says:'the child would have gotten scared and run away'. I am paraphrasing. Imagine that song in Atana, especially in Desikar's voice!

purv: I thought you were going to experiment with Hamsadhwani for sad songs. The result might not be what you had in mind just as Atana would have produced different effect on the child. Try anyway!

It seems SA Rajkumar also likes Keeravani. I can think of two of his songs in this raaga. One is the hit 'Innisai Paadi Varum' from the film 'Thullaatha Manamum Thullum.' The other I believe is 'Ennavo Ennavo' from 'Priyamanavale.' Would you guys agree? It seems Keeravani is a favorite of almost all MDs.

I have a comment to make...
Angeli,
Vakulabharanam is Harmonic Major Inverse and is not HARMONIC minor inverse....
CHAKRAVAKham is Harmonic Minor Inverse(or Keeravani Inverse)

I know Ravindran is legally not a TFM composer now, but I thought I'd mention anyway that it seems his favorite raaga is Sudhasaveri (and I don't blame him!), though he has also been successful at handling raagas like Mohanam, Abheri, Jog, Hamsavinodhini, Vasanthi, etc. However, I haven't heard any good songs from him in Hindolam, Mayamalavagowlai or Keeravani.

One of the most favourite ragas of VS seems to be Dharbari Kanada. VS tries to use this raga in more movies as a protocol!! A beautiful raga that can assure any MD a good melody out of it!!

the favourite raage for vidyasagar is durbar kannada. which includes the fantastic melodies like malare , ore manam ,booomiye ,panikkatre, malaikkatru ondru, kadhal vandhal from iyarkai, nee katru ,pallithozhiye... from thithikudhe

Rajesh:
I think for MSV(+TKR), ragas such as Sindhu Bhairavi, Nata Bhairavi, Hari Kambodhi, Shankara Bharanam etc were favourites. However, it is my opinion that MSV never really worried about ragas, unless really required (say, in classical based themes such as Karnan). His main aim was to give melodious tunes.
By the way, can anyone say if the following are in Sindhu Bhairavi scale:
varay en thozhi varayo - pudhiya paravai
annamitta kaigalukku - iru malargal
adaludal padalai kettu - K.Koyil
ammamma katru vandhu - vennira adai
avalukkenna azhagiya mugam - S.Sundaram
enge nimmadhi - pudhiya paravai (may be Natabhairavi?)
ennai yaarendru - palum pazhamum
