IIR will be in Hungary POSITIVELY by mid April and it will take 25 days for practice, co-ordination and recording of the Symphony. He will come to USA straight from Hungary and will have a few fund-raisin meetings to make good for the advanced money and immediately after that, the CD's will be properly made and will be available for sale from one source only. This is the planned program for now. There will be no changes. Pl. donate.

SSS:
So far I have been a silent observer to the procedings - not that my silent observation is expected to have a bearing on either the pro or con of this 'funds for TiS' project. In fact, I have had an uncommunicated respect for somebody who, despite the constant questioning, doubt, and criticism, has continued the endeavor towards this project.
But your latest post - "thru collections[about 20K so far!], from loans, from our savings[including second mortgage of our homes etc]" - is clearly overboard. You sound like an evangelist man! Next, you will be approaching old widows to pledge their social security checks.
To me, Ilayaraja (modhalla indha isaignani, maestro, raagadevan, thEnisaith thendral, isaippuyal, nnu sila pala naNbargaL parasparam pagirndhu konda pattangaLa niruththungayyaa) has given hours, days, weeks, and years of wonderful musical experience. And so have MSV, KVM, ARR, SDB, RDB,.......the list continues. We have all spent time here in the DF and elsewhere discussing who is better, whose songs have had the greatest impact, whose sweat stinks less, and other such important earth-shattering topics. And we have also dicsussed about Gavaskar vs. Vishwanath, Aishwarya vs. Madhuri, MGR vs. Sivaji, Rajini vs. Kamal.........and you know what? it doesn't matter a bit. All these people have been graced with some talents and qualities just like you and me - the only difference is yours and mine maybe different (than those of the above) and is definitely less observable in the public eye. But all of us have to work in our different ways to achieve success - some more and some less.
Let us not deify any one of these and definitely let us not use public forums to exhibit our eccentricities in passion and try to inflict upon others.
How you or somebody you know has incurred a second-mortgage on their house or pledged their first-born is a private matter. In my opinion, there are loonies, nut-cases, and then there are people who do such acts :-). Next enna? theekkuLikkaravaa list aa?
I have been associated with the music industry albeit in an epidermal level. I wonder why it must cost millions of dollars to make a symphony, and why tons of musicians need to go to Hungary, and why to Hungary in the first place?
As has been mentioned in this thread umpteen times before nobody needs to know the $$s contributed by SSS, or SS, or any single individual. However, if you are involved in fund raising activity in a public forum, the minimum information you need to provide (and yes! you are obligated to do so) is some sort of a budget for expenses, expenditure items, artists fees, and very very important when you are dealing with Indian workers - a time line.
ungaLukku aruL puriyara iraivan, naan second mortgage eduththEnnaa thodappa kattaiyaala matEr matEr nu pOduvaa!
Please respond to this or tone down in your request for funds.

rajaG, has a point here:
As has been mentioned in this thread umpteen times before nobody needs to know the $$s contributed by SSS, or SS, or any single individual. Fans go by faith and passion and eccentrities. It is because it is important for the fans more than the artiste. I think IR is involving more people in the grand scheme, which is delivering great works of literature, philosophy and spirituality to the world thru a powerful force, that is IR' music itself. I myself do not see anything more positive and powerful than IR' creative genius.
so, SSSSA are not wrong in coming out with their situation today. All those numerous fans have contributed only $20,000 indicates something is not right with the fans themselves or with the way the marketing by SSSSA has carried out, the latter aspect highiligted by rajaG. WHich means, more clearer details, change in schedules, etc.. would've certainly encouraged more careful fan contributors to contribute thier moneys to the investors in the project. Most important, the investors have not yet so far mentioned what do you get out of the contribution of even $5.00: is there a CD or cassette sent, that will mean one contribute can assure his stranger friends "hey, your giving $5 (or even 15.00) but you will get a avant-garde symphony from the greatest composer,as far as we believe and we want you to share in that joy,, etc...
i am still waiting for this level of exchange from SSSSA. that is one reason, why i haven't gone ahead to even conjure up an evening with general friends to tell them hey just contribute $10 or $15 and wait and see when you have the CD in your hands.....
mostly, some people like me who have grander ideas of donating for IR, but cannot or will not, because of various external factors need some push out of inertia from SSSSA to accomplish some helpless fans' objectives this way.
The web site is also not clear about what one gets by donating. yes, the grand vision of IR is what we are all working towards, but what about some non-Indians who can step forward and contribute and want somehting in exchange?
SSSSA, don't forget that there may be many who will be gladly contributing post Symphony release. so rest assured you can get some good results,. but please do clarify some issues here.
Thanks, and again, you are doing everything given your time constraints and I pray for the best for all of you!

rajaG: well said.
this is just going beyond 'eccentricities' or 'blind passion'.
without any clear cut goals or without proper plan and most important of all 'not being open to the public'--the whole venture is questionable in terms of worthiness (don't jump on me thinking that I am referring to plundering-i don't even have faintest doubt that you will)
added to many things posted by rajaG:
with the current technology in terms of internet/file sharing etc.....how can one profit from CD sales and build a music college or whatever? the minute the CD is released I am sure there will be mp3 files floating around.
And by doing a second mortgage etc, if you think IR is gonna be happy or tamil maiyyam is gonna flourish with profit to build something....man!! i got to really sympathesize you.
One should draw a line at some point for these kinds of things. IR is great!!! There is no doubt about it. But don't you think we should also build our life and for our future generations? Don't we have responsibility to do that for them?
my 2 cents. don't jump on me.

ShivR,
Well Said.
Except some gentlemen like SSSSA giving updates like "IR coming to US, going to Hungary" etc, and a recorded voice of IR, We are not hearing or seeing any credible proof that TIS is going to happen..( though I pray it should happen ! ).
Even writer Sujatha seems to have come across the news by some links like this..
While the whole Tamil heart land is kept completely ignorant of the mission, people are collecting money in the U.S..
Why does IR hesitate to come openly with a press conference in Chennai and seek Tamil people here to donate for the cause..? Whoever accepts or not, he is still considered Music God in TN.
IR may not like advertisement, but what we ask is some information..Still, the date of release is unknown.. Fot those who may say that contributions may be minimal if collected here, I would like to remind that Vivekananda Rock Memorial was constructed with all 1 Rs collected from people of TamilNadu..
And with all the profit, he is going to start a college in Srilanka ???

I am SURE TIS is going to be released. There is no doubt it. When? I am not curious on the date of release.
My botherations as said earlier are:
1. Is this public venture going to be profitable in terms of goals like building a college etc? (with audio piracy-this whole venture is quite immaturish for anyone to even think about it)
2. Why Sri Lanka? what if the most of the contributors are from TN? I am not bringing a war here. Just getting "curious"?
3. giving 5$ or more is not going to pinch anybody--but even for that small amount--is it worthy enough? I would rather donate to some well-fare organization than for this 'poorly' thought, and for some 'unknown motive' venture.
4.finally, hope the triple S doesn't take this personally. My subjective opinion: Doing a second mortgage and using that as a trump card to attract contributors--doesn't look nice. It shows irresponsibility. One should think about their kid's future and should not go by their own 'passions'. That is why we raise kids and compromise several things for their well-being. THAT would be MY FIRST PASSION. I would do such a thing for my family FIRST. IR is well-settled and raised 3 kids and given best future one could conceive. We should think about our family first and then go for these passions.

Dear all,
Here is another approach to familiarize the layman like me with "SYMPHONY". We know there will be enough learned sous out there who will jump immediately to point to the site and leave it to the seeker,[as they did with our effort to introduce Thiruvasakam] but it is for THOSE who want to know 'what is meant by symphony'. Those who dont want, please skip. Thanks.
1. WHAT IS A SYMPHONY?
A symphony, as it is generally defined today, is a large-scale composition for orchestra, usually in three or four movements. However, this definition only scratches the surface of what is a great musical tradition.
