Song of the Day: malarum vaan nilavum from Mahakavi Kalidas.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/malarumvaan.rm
- Sung by P.Suseela. Music by K.V.Mahadevan. Lyrics by Ku.Ma.Balasubramaniam.
- There is a TMS version of this song that I don't have.
- This is a melodious song by KVM, where PS has excelled in her rendition. Especially, check out the way she ends the first charaNam, with a lingering "kaiyail kidaikkaamal maRaiginRaai". The interludes are pretty short, and the orchestration minimal. In the charaNams, each line repeats twice, for no apparent reason. Ku.Ma.Paa could have added different lines rather than repeating each line.
- Lyrics in our PPP page: http://www.newtfmpage.com/ppp/malarum_vaan.html
- The lyrics is also worth analysing. I am not sure of the context of the song. I initially thought that she is singing this to a kid. This is because Ku.Ma.Paa writes "kuzhalum yaazh isaiyum konjum oliyellaam un kural vaNNamE", taking off directly from "kuzhal inidhu, yaazh inidhu enbar mazhalaich chol kELaadhavar". But, in the charanams, it looks like a lady singing about missing her lover, who has left her. He writes, "thanimaith thuyaril thavikka thavikka en thalaivaa unakkidhu vEdikkaiyO".
- More info on Ku.Ma.Paa: http://www.newtfmpage.com/my/lyricist/kumapa.txt
- Mahakavi Kalidas also has the great Atana number, Yaar tharuvaar indha ariyaasanam.

bb:
From my memory...
When Kalidhas rejects marrying the queen (because Kalidhas considers her as The Mother kALi on that crucial first night when he gets intellectually transformed) she commits suicide, with a boon from kALi that she will be born again and will become united with Kalidhas in that new birth. In the new birth, as a young girl the reborn queen sings a composition of Kalidhas (malarum vaan nilavum) in her house. Kalidhas, who is walking nearby, listens to the sweet rendering of his composition, is attracted, walks into the house, and their "new" romantic relationship starts there.
A couple of other good TMS songs in the movie...
kalaimagaL enakkoru aaNaiyittaaL
kallaai vandhavan kadavuLadaa
Also, here are a few more bit songs by TMS.

The queen role was played by Sowkar Janaki in the movie.

One more thing worth mentioning...
The TMS version (it comes earlier to the PS version in the movie) has the same pallavi, but completely different charanams. That song is written in praise of the natural wonders created by the Almighty. I have the TMS version in mp3. Let me know if you need it.

Song of the Day: gnaan gnaan paadaNum from poonthaLir.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/gnaangnaan.rm
- One of my favorite Jency songs for the weekend. Music by Ilayaraja. Isai_Nanban mentioned elsewhere that this song was written by M.G.Vallaban, who passed away recently.
- The song starts off with a tabla sequence and then on, the violins take over. If one is asked to name 10 greatest songs of IR where the violins have played a major part, this will be one of them. violingaLum oru thaniththu niRkum flute-um ondru sErumbOthu nam manadhaiyum sErththu koLLai adikkindrana. The end of the 2nd interlude especially, after a playful part with the flute, just before it reaches the charanam, the violin takes a dive, just enough to send me to the edge of a cliff and back. Every time I hear this, the tune stays on lingering for a day or more. The Maestro at the height of his powers!
- In newtfmpage and elsewhere, I've seen people who either can't differentiate between Jency and SJ, or can and just can't stand Jency's voice and believe that she spoilt IR's greatest numbers. I am fairly agnostic to her voice, and thankfully, she hasn't done too bad on this song.
- PoonthaLir is a classic album, featuring "manadhil enna ninaivugaLO" (was featured in SOTD earlier) and "vaa ponmayilE".
- Any info on the movie and the actors and the situation of this song?

Good one,bb!
S.M Creations' Poonthalir-1979 starred Sivakumar, Sujatha, ARS, Manorama and others. The wall posters advertised the film as "a film to commemorate the International Year Of The Child"--it was about the adventures of a child whose mother (Sujatha) dies, and he is left all alone on the roads of Chennai, and how he is finally reunited with his father (Sivakumar)--almost like Baby's Day Out--only perhaps a more serious story.
Earlier, Sivakumar, a painter and sculptor meets Sujatha in Kerala and falls in love with her--this song is sung by Sujatha then.
Other than the songs mentioned, 'raja chinna raja'-PS and 'kanninmani ennai kanduppidi'-SPS(?) are also good ones.

If SJ had sung it would have reached the masses
somehow Jenseys voice is not suitable to the music.

bb, wonderful! Anothr Jency super number with an exciting exciting tabla start and second interlude. But, this somehow is not a malayalam type number, IR has a few songs that was very Keralaish: two of them are:
Sandhanamittu Sathiradu is one amazing Suseela/IR is the most prominent for me
2. Solai Kuyiley Aadum Kathire classic SPSailaja/IR rustic/temple song.
Poonthalir songs, all of them except for an interesting English number were very popular in Radio Srilanka in the 80s. In fact, i recorded one number in SGanesh style.
If you can put Ilamai Kkolam song sometime - Kannan Naalum, I am sure many would be new to that outrageous song.
Thanks

I am listening to this song for the first time.
The second interlude is fabulous. I like the echo effect the guitar gets. sounds very psychedelic.

An apt name for the movie (poondhaLir) is 'theruvil peN (kuzhandhai???)'. Throughout the movie, we see only this. A thoroughly unwatchable movie, with songs being the only saving grace.
I wonder WHAT aspect of the movie motivated IR to compose songs like this.
