I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Naaz,
I don't have those two albums at the moment. However, I have another long-awaited duet from that period. Keep guessing for a few hours.

Yes, that's a long-awaited, worth the long wait kind of song!
I listened to it a few times just for the "aadattum padattum" bit!
Thanks - or should that be Namo Namo Namaha? :-)

One song that stands out in my mind is "Paadi Azhaithen, Unnai" from "Rasigan Oru Rasigai" - MD is Ravindran, originally a Malayalam song.

I think I may have been wrong about the song - I thin the song I meant to talk about was "kaaatrinile Varum Geetham" from "Rasigan Oru Rasigai". I think there is a Vani Jayaram version of "Paadi Azhaithen" also, but I'm not sure.
Also, I think "Paadi Konde Iruppen" from Sirai was also by VJ and was a masterpiece.

Guys,
Is this song "Karisal Tharisu Kalani Aachchu...." from Achchamillai Achchamillai sung by Vani Jeyaram?
Thanks

dinesh,
VJ&SPB have sung hundreds of duets in Tamil/Telugu/Kannada. "edhu sugam sugam" ranks one of the best among those hundreds. Similar to "madhanorcavam rathiyoduthaan" from the film "Chathurangam". I wish ARR will offer this pair more duets instead of the imported singers.
Philosopher,
Few weeks ago Naaz and I discussed "Naan Paadikkonde Iruppen". If you scroll back further many others have written about this masterpiece. You seem to like VJ's classical based songs. How about you writing more about VJ's classicals?
GCTKuil,
Yes, "Karisal Tharisu is by Vani. Beautifully composed by V.S.Narasimhan, a slightly Hindustani based song. Vani has executed it masterfully with viraha bhavam and technical excellence. This song has become rare. I haven't found a good recording yet.

You are right on with the comparison of Edhu Sugam Sugam and Madanortsavam - Delectable compositions both.
In the first one the line "kannoram inneram sendhooram undaga" - just the Ma endings are something to behold. In the latter, the same effect is captured with "puriyadha pennmai idhu, poo pondra menmai idhu, pon andhi maalai, innenna leelai..."
See how the lines roll off, verbatim without a gap in my memory! (that's what I call the impact of a song!)
I've been seeking the Karisal Tharisu song for a long time. Another song that is rich in dialect, executed with flirtatious mischief. The line "podhum sami podhum" is such an invitation!
Please share this file, whenever you get a good copy.

Neel D,
Thanks, Yeah it sounded as Vani. But one of my friend was arguing with me, that is it not VJ but some other singer called Anitha. Hence, I wanted to confirm that. Thanks again :)

Naaz,
As I was going through the post-85 IR collection, which I dread, I bumped into a song by VJ. Don't get excited. It is one of those run-of-the-mill songs that IR churned out in that period. In the lines of "naan or kannippoNNu". A seducing kind of song with pedestrian lyrics and a lot of disco music. This song is "oththaiyilE kannippoNNu". Have you heard it? Expect it soon. VJ has given her best, as always.
GCTKuil, you are welcome.

oh! that is "Adiya pAdhanggaL ambalaththil". Then "Adum Kaalai"..........? Is it from Madurai Meeta Sundara Paandiyan? Movie starts with one dance song in which latha almost breaks the stage by jumping like a giant frog?
Aarumuha! saravana! cheekiram vaa!

I am looking forward to the Oththaiyile Kannipponnu song. The song doesn't ring a bell immediately, but if I hear it, I might have a few pointers (but no guarantees!). Please share the song with us.

You were right all along! This song is imminently forgettable :-)
VJ was saddled with some of IRs avasara compositions, it seems. All the "hit" songs went to the others and some drab anuradha (I really like Idhu Rosapoovu)or kuyili songs were offered to VJ. For all that - at least the words and singing are clear and in sync. Adhulle Oru Kuraiyum Illai!

pl. find the link for two excellent songs of VJ in malayalam
1. "aashaada maasam aathmavil mOham" from the movie "yuddhabhoomi" music by R.K.shekar(ARR's father). I already listened some of his compositions, but this sounds very different. the song reflects the affair of an "prostitute", with the real pain. VJ extremly done a good job.

2."seemantha rekhayil snathanam charthiya" from the movie "aasirvatham", i think sridevi is the heroine. VJ-M.K.arjunan comination.

Thanks, Kalai, for these links. Both are excellent songs.
G Ragavan, that Madurai Meeta Sundarapandiyan song is 'Mangalam pongum'.
'Aadum kalai' is from a film that never got released :((- the film was titled Malaichaaralil Oru Poonkuyil. There are many such VJ gems that lie buried in the cans, along with the films.

Since the website stopped adding/providing song tracks, I've been listening to some really old songs, downloaded many months ago. This morning I heard Thinthom Thinthom EnapPaadinal(Kuppaththu Raja)...it had completely escaped my memory. But on listening to it - wow - what a flawless performance by VJ and MSV!
The opening captures the mood of a Kotha perfectly (sarangi and all!) and the opening swarsingar is divine...the ambience is immediately mughal and the kathak dancer's feet and fragrance toss you into a whirlwind of passion. The situation seems to be of a woman "forced" to perform in front of an audience...and the song begins with a sob-filled voice. But that's only for the first few seconds, before VJs virtuoso rendtion tacks wings on a meloncholic moment and before you know it - the song soars.
The charanam octave is something that only a singer of VJs calibre can arc and achieve. "Kanna" begins with such ferocity, the words like fire-darts, one after the other with indignant velocity - how the singer takes us right into the distraught heart of the dancer dancing against her wishes! The lyrics emphasise this paradox adeptly.
This song has hall the charm of Mora Saajan, only it is full length (not a tiny khayal) and the pleasure is infinite.
Dancing girls with golden hearts and their sodden and(em)boldened pimps. But how this caged bird sings! How the song makes clear that it the voice that makes you see gold bars even in a discounted, scrap-yard cage!
The song is hallmark VJ. And there's no competition many many charanams away!
Thanks for this moment!

Blooper in the above:
Thinthom Thinthom Ena Aadinal!! :-)
Now that I'm here:
The cross-reference of the Mahabharata in the charanam, is perfect both metaphorically and literally. The singer/dancer is a pawn, and played against her will.
The stanza that begins:
Kannale Edha Mugham Kanbadhaiya
Kanna Un Kann Thirandhu Parumaiya
Unnai Kanna Endral Kavalai Theerumaiyah
The same plea - epic in its scope, and just as old.
The context is different, but just as ancient. This song is about a woman of the oldest profession!
The lines in the following stanza, arrest the humiliation in sequence:
Kaiyai Pidththoruvan Vadi Enban
Oruvan Kannadi Munbu Nindru Udaieduppan...
En Gunammatri Dinandhorum Nadika Vaippan
The material against the metaphorical is beautifully juxtaposed; the appeal is both accesible and sublime.
Kannadasan, I bet? :-)

Vani jayram's rendition of Bole Re PapiHara (in Hindi) is outstanding. She has brought the entire beauty of Mian Malhar in the line Dan Mile Babul Ke Ghar Se...Marvellous!
