Sorry to interrupt:
This is a question on the musical approach of a song:
I remember once Kamal said in an interview how IR composed the song 'Inji Iduppazhagi..'.Kamal sang a RD Burman song and said that he wanted a similar style and within a flash IR came up with that tune.Does somebody here remember what was that song.
Thanx in advance.

Kiru and others
talking about morsing
how about 'Dilruba' I hope thats the name of the instrument,it sounds very similar to 'Sarangi'
but brings out tremdrous emotions in it
and its really mesmerizing.
I know both ARR and IR has used it.
Anyone care for more inputs on this.
Some songs I know with 'Dilruba' is
'Chinna Thaiaval' from dhalapathi
'Evno oruvan' from Alaipayuthe

Kiru, me in the middle of quarter, so having these stupid mid terms, and projects. I was just following the forum occasionally. Neways, how are u, UV, Srikanth, and other guys doing?
Isiaosai, I am not that much familiar with TFM, so i cant list all the directors who used the rhythm guitar , but some of ARR's are
1. Uppu karuvaadu( Mudhalvan), thats one energitic rhythm playing.
2. Injirango (tenali), listen to second charanam by Chitra.
3. Thenrale Thenrale (kadhal desam) second charanam and the pallavi following it, good plucking and strummimg.
4. Nadir thinna and Signore (new songs).
5. Come on come on (Love birds), first we hear a mute guitar and then the acoustic picks up.
6. Sundari (again from KM) too has good acoustic guitar.
These are some, I listed them cos they have different strumming pattern, separate from the run-of-mill stuff. I like Sutrom bhoomi too, in the pallavi, it sounds like guitar, but I am not sure.
UV some more,
Intro to Ayirathil Naan Oruvan (iruvar),second intelrude in kirukku chiruthavale (mudhalvan), mitwa in lagaan. (Not dilruba, But it is sarangi, the credits say so.)

One more thing, I was listening to jiya jale, and the voice leading seemed really cool and simple. In the malayalam intro, the harmony is given only by the fifth note for the main melody, and it is doubled again in the fifth note for the bass part. (Like the bass singer sings the fifth note, and another singer also sings the fifth note in the upper octave, and the main melody is sung in between these two notes (oblique motion)). Also towards the end of the song the voices move in opposite direction (contrary motion).
Raasathi en usuru is another good one, I will write down some things i noted in that song tommorow. Cud others put in more info on vocal harmony, esp by IR?
Thanks.

couple of examples of IR that I can think of immediately :
1. thakita thathimi from salangai Oli- towards the end beautiful choral harmony, I believe there are atleast 3 distinct melody lines lapped on each other..the effect is scintillating
2. pani vizhum iravu - in the second interlude, this is relatively simpler, just 2 different vocal tracks one humming the same notes at a merely higher pitch..I believe IR has done more like this

Sam..studies first and only then fun :)
BTW, IR IS synonymous with harmony in TFM..so include vocal harmonies as well. There are too many ..too many examples. Just listened to a song in 'kazugu' in www.dhool.com. Wow. Looks like you have not listened to much of IR..whenever you get a chance listen to IR songs in www.dhool.com. I am rediscovering many yesteryear favorites of mine..
Also, IR is THE guy if you are looking for contrapuntal style arrangements. Hari, was asking about two indian melodies contrapuntally arranged. I can hear something like that in the salangai oli songs.

Sabhaiku Vanakam
Anybody remember the song 'O vasantha raja' from Neengal Ketavai by Illayaraja
This is a brilliant song by IR & sung by SPB/SJ.
Starts with Veena & Flute but western format
First interlude - Veena & Violins +Mridangam
The first stanza is with violins & Mridangam in very carnatic style.
Second interlude turns completly western with violins & flute & drums
Second stanza is with Bass guitar & Drums
Return to pallavi with mridangam
A classic !

Kiru,
I haven't heard much of IR, except for his telugu albums (i am from AP) and his hits in tamil, (and I am quite bad with tamil names) thats why I always ask about his compositions. I started listening to his old tamil songs since last year, after I came to US. Neways, I do listen to him evry day, as I consider him and ARR to be my inspirations, they are simply too good, geniuses in one sense (Once in a blue moon their work may not reflect it, but that doesnt mean they are not genuises, even in that there is something for me to learn, I always say dont brush off anything from these two guys).
And not to forget a couple of guys I know of, Father Dominic (Chitra, minmini, Mano and others sang for him), he is from Kerala, settled in AP, and a young guy called Ashirvad Luke (from my city), and of course GNR :-). Ashirvad besides doing some christian devotionals, did the music for the movie rockford (but SEL are creditied with that, thats a different story), and recently he has done his first full fledged movie in telugu (Chelia chirukopama, or some name like that). I saw these guys work and (to put it in american slang), Dude they rock dude. I didnt have formal education in music, but I try to learn from these awesome guys I mentioned, and people like U, Swami, Srikanth, Aditya, UV, and others in this forum.
Not that this post wud of interest but just like that. Sorry for the digression.

Hi Guys
nice to see you all back here.
well IR has done lots of vocal harmony
Sam I think you have to visit this webpage to learn more about IR approach its by Guitar Prasanna
http://raajangahm.com/guitarprasanna/favo_songs.html
And in that page listen to this song 'Devanin Koil' super harmony sung by IR himself
ARR song 'Rasathi' from Thiruda Thiruda has a nice harmony.
I like nsyncs harmonies :)
It will nice if we can discuss more on harmony as there are many types of it.

A couple of more examples..the start of "keeravani" from paadum paravaigal, 2 vocal tracks, one singing the swaras and the other doing the humming at a higher pitch, both SPB's of course :-)
and the prelude humming of "thamthana thamthana" is another good example

Regarding vocal harmonies!...
1. April mayile.
2. Va va majal malre.
3. Raja Rajathi from Agni* , this song was really done well , ignoring the fact IR singing it. few told me he did it because he could not find a singer who could justify his compostion.
IR harmonies are conceptually "perfect", however in tfm we were short of harmony singers. We are trained in indian music which is monophony.
Like there were not many tranied harmony singers in tfm. Regular chorus singers were used. AIR had a nice group however movie song is totallY a different ball game.
IR had a this big short coming so he often sang his composition., what else a composer can do?,
if no body could justify his composition., this is main reason many composer stand in front of the mic inspite of poor voice quality.
IR managed to give lot of vocal harmonies. Like in thalapathi there is small signature song called "thalapathi", which has nice vocal harmony.
Arr is also good in this, Arr had very nice resource which he used it very well. Arr uses gagets at times to get Harmonies. This makes is harmony sound more perfect and clear. He has tons of new singers who are really trained in singing harmonies.
Harmony during msv days (sorry i had to go back) started long time ago with basic fresh idea for that period of time. However once again singers were not tranined, in nejathai alli kojam tha tha from kadhalika neramillai , KJY/PS have a nice vocal harmony.
(Hari: if you remeber our conversation in chromatic scaling, April mayile is one good example, 1st and 2nd bgm is a wonder! to me, it simply flows.)
