In comparing Kannadhaasan and Vairamuthu objectively, why don't we all prove to ourselves that we don't need to take sides with a poet and only take sides with good poetry? I can come up with enough examples for both poets and I'm sure many others can too. Let's consider this a tiny saevai for TFM lyrics. I will gladly set forth the categories that we can judge the two poets by and we can all go to work. If anything I hope this exercise will make one diehard fan of Kannadhaasan appreciate VM and vice versa.
Here are the categories to judge both poets by giving examples of lyrics they wrote for TFM:
1)Iyarkai Varnanai
2)Kaadhal Paadalgal
3)Thaththuva Paadalgal
4)Vaarthai Prayoagam
5)Nagaichchuvai Paadalgal
6)Samudhaaya Seerthirutha / Puratchi Paadalgal
7)Vingyaana/Naveena Karuthoottum Paadalgal
8)Ilakkiya Moolam Ulla Paadalgal
9)Kadhaikku Porundhiya Paadalgal(situational songs)
10)Kavidhai Milekarkal (Poetic Milestones that the poets will be remembered by!)

Another great Iyarkai song by VM is in the movie, "Aaraadhanai"
PAadal: Ilam Pani Thulir Vidum Naeram
ilam pani thulir vidum naeram
ilaygalil magaranthak koalam
thanikkili ondru thavithapadi
thunaikkili thedi thudithapadi
sudach chuda nanaigindradhae. . .
If some one knows the rest of the lyrics please post it here.

In this song, VM writes of the inspiration nature evokes in him
and the bond he shares with nature:
kaalai naerap poonguyil kavidhai paadath thoondudhae
kalaindhu poana maegangal kavanamaagak kaetkudhae
kaetta paadal kaatrilae kaelviyaagap poagumoa
engae un raagam suvaram aa aa aa
. . .
maedai poadum pournami
aadip paadum oar nadhi
vella oliyinil maegalai
mella mayangudhu en nilai
. . .
pattu viriththadhu pulveli
pattuth theriththadhu vinnoli
puthiya maegam kavidhai paadum
bhoopaalam paadaamal endhan kaalai
thoanrum ennaalum
Of all the things one would long for, VM longs for
impossible ways to embrace nature in this classic from "Roja"
vennilavu thottu muththamida aasai
ennaiyindha bhoomi sutrivara aasai
. . .
malligaip poovaai maarivida aasai
thenralaik kandu maalayida aasai
maegangalaiyellaam thottuvida aasai
. . .
saettru vayalaadi naatru nada aasai
meen pidiththu meendum aatril vida aasai
vaanavillaik konjam uduththikkolla aasai
paniththulikkul naanum paduththukkolla aasai
Here, VM shows a lover's loss through the way
nature reminds him of a lover's memory that the
loss is heightened by nature's incapability
to overshadow his loss; on another level the song
also shows that the lover has become his nature
thenral ennaith theendinaal saelai theendum njaabagam
chinnap pookkal paarkkaiyil dhaegam paarththa njaabagam
velli oadai paesinaal sonna vaarththai njaabagam

When ordinary eyes see the surface beauty of nature, Vairamuthu, deciphers nature with his x-ray vision and wonders aloud about the little secrets of nature that humans are not privy to. In this song from "May Maadham" he expresses such wonder:
mannum vinnum urasugaiyil
enna baashai paesidumoa
alaiyum kadalum urasugaiyil
paesum baashai paesidumoa
kaatrum malayum urasugaiyil
enna baashai paesidumoa
paarvai rendum paesikkondaal
baashai oomai aayvidumoa

Summary Comments/Opinions: Switching back to English now, thamizhth thAi mannikkavum! I find kaNNadhAsan's works to be everything everyone expects and takes for granted from kaNNadhAsan--pooraNa kaviththuvam, thamizh nayam, poruL nayam, kaRpanai vaLam, ilakkiya sugam, iyaRkaiyin maNam.
However, vairamuththu's verses on nature touch a chord in me unfailingly. "How did this guy even know what I feel like?" has been my first thought when I first listened to some of his songs I've listed above. He goes beyond just iyaRkai varNanai and makes communing with nature personal and real which is possible only by someone who has bonded with nature in such a personal way. Such finer feelings are very very rarely experienced or expressed for fear of sounding "wimpy", but very much needed in today's materialistic world with its hectic lifestyles, IMO.
Isn't making the listener identify with his(her) feelings a dimension of good poeticism too? If so, VM is very successful in this dimension as far as I'm concerned with reference to nature. And, he has a social message about nature appreciation needed very much for the remainder of this century and the next. So, I'm glad VM followed kaNNadhAsan in TFM as far as the subtopic Nature is concerned.
