When's 12B releasing? Any official info?
The only info I gotto hear was that Harris was off to Manhattan, US for mixing the songs for 12B for 15 days, recently. The promos are also out on TV and do look interesting, but as always its way too early to say anything at this point.
After Majnu, I do look forward to 12B. Is it true that the audio is slated to be out on August 15th? One of the rumours I heard!

on first hearing nothing impressed me..... i doubt if its going to be impressing even after multiple hearings..... he has followed his *gurunadhar* style - some new (*horrible*) voices, and you cannot understand most of the lyrics...... may be these are what is needed for a *song*/*album* to be a hit :-)

why are ppl always saying "superb sales!" and things like that??
do they actually listen to the music or the quality of it?
or are they just taken in by the sales & publicity??
sad man...

* Tamizh killed at its best.
* All songs remind me of some ARR tune.
* Rythm patters and progressions are so predicatble. So bad considering that this is his 3rd or 4th movie.
* Did someone mention the phrase "one time wonder"??

bad..bad..bad..I doubt this guys integrity/creativity..Love Pannu song seems to be inspired/copied from 'aayirathil nAn oruvan' song in iruvar..I beg Sukhwinder Singh not to sing any more tamil song !!! :( :( Gaad..how can these young MDs be so irresponsible towards their own mother tongue..Pathetic

kiru,
You are right!
Sukhwinder's Jothi nEril Vara song is such an ear-sore that I stopped listening to any film song the whole day and returned to some classical stuff.
Has anyone been able to follow what he's singing(?) Maala POda pOraa becomes Mala podaaaaaaa Pora!-
The whole song is unlistenable. Idu Tamizh Kolai kooda illai.. Genocide!
It is not merely an accent problem! It's a much larger issue!
These so-called saviours of Tamil like Vairamuthu are only interested in money. They don't bother to correct the way Tamil words are pronounced.

ok, then iam sure the Sukwinder's song would be a major hit in TN :-).... Kiru and PP, you say the MDs are so irresponsible, what about the *audience* who listen to these guys and make it a hit ? i would'nt blame the MD's in the first place, blame it on US, who keep encouraging this....

got to agree with u guys! in school if there is a guy from north India we teach him some tamil words and ask him to repeat it. "ellarum class ulla vanga " etc..
it used to be funny. sukhwinders rendition of this song is horrible to say the least. In the normal world it should have been an experimental song to potray a northie singing butler tamizh.
but in 12B it will be a marathamizhan lip moving to this song .
I did not even get the the first 2 words. I dont think the 2nd word is "neril vara" its something else.
but i wont jump into the band wagon and critisize HJ. I will give these songs another try (not the sukwinder song.... yuck!)

But did film music of that era not dilute Carnatic music?
A: Viswanathan is really known for creating the new genre of light music. He is the King of Light music. Light music replaced classical music, it did not dilute it. The same way Ilayaraja replaced this with folk music. The reach of folk music was tremendous, and the paymasters had changed and this is what they wanted, so it prevailed.
And Rahman has brought in western rhythms killing folk. The logic is, the people want it and we are providing it.
My sadness is that classical is gone now, and we are denying it to the people. There was a question that someone in the audience asked in a panel discussion on this topic I participated in once. He said " I don't know everything about music, and if I ask for poison will you give it to me?"
That is what we are doing now. Giving them poison saying that they want it.
****************
I feel both the audience and the MDs are equally responsible. MDs on their part should not succumb to the pressures of getting fame and money and at the same time audience should not "change with times" if that is what "change with times" is all about!!!

The following three Q&A are interesting of ARRahman
***Start of Q&A**********
Q.You say you are choosy in your projects, but you also go in for populist songs. Why so?
A. Different people need different songs. I want to go down to the people at various levels. When I toured Tamil Nadu, I found that people wanted songs that would make them happy. There is nothing vulgar in my songs. I want my music to reach everywhere. If I play rock, only youngsters will understand, while older people will say, "Why is he shouting like this?" Each category of music reaches only one circle; for the class audience "Thiruda Thiruda" and for the masses "Gentleman". I am learning Carnatic classical music from Dakshinamurthy and Hindustani from Krishnan Nayar. I like traditional music. I want my job to be interesting and fun. I just don't want to get stuck again in monotony.
Q. Are you being repetitive in your musical style?
A. In recent times I've done films with a similar outlook. These films are aimed at the young generation and therefore have to be beat oriented. Yet I've tried for a distinct sound every time. After Bombay I haven't got stuck in the hip-hop groove. What I did for Rangeela and Indian were zestful and fast paced but quite unlike Bombay. As for the gentler paced songs of 'Kadhal Desam' if you care to notice they are rooted in melody.
Q. What are your views on the Indian film music scene today?
A. Its going through a cyclical process. The techno stuff has reached a saturation point. Soon we'll be back to simple and soulful melodies. When you here the songs of 'Aanandam' you'll see I've used an acoustic rather than an electronic base on three of the songs.
***End of Q&A**********
As ARR said, I too beleive simple and soulful melodies will be back sung by good voices who can properly pronounce Tamil. I am not sure how long it will take. But these north Indian singers like UN,Shankar Mahadevan, Sukhvinder have become a virus. Its not singers fault to kill the words and sing like that. I feel its MD's, directors and producers fault who are using them. Even if singer is not doing well and people are there to pay hefty amount why wouldnt any singer sing a song?
Even in telugu they are just killing songs. When SPB charges 10-15K for a song, Udit is charging 60K for a song and he has atleast 1-2 songs in every Telugu movie.I dont know about Malayalam and Kannada songs.

Guys..(I am back after a long gap)
I listened to 12B once (raaga.com). Should say good. Better that all Deva, VS and SAR stuff. But, again a replica of ARR kind of music.
This sukwinder's song, I think is an intelligent copy of a old manna dey's bengali song "AAkash jo deep jole" (I think this song also came in hindi). "Jhodi neril vara" seems to be an electronic remix of that old classic. Can some body who have listened to old hindi/bengali song confirm this?

Sure Harris music is better then Deva,Sirpi,SAR but does Harris deserve all this hype.? as if he is the next ARR. I dont think so. Well few more films and we will know his stuff?
I think Mr.Vidayasagar without all this big hype has silently is making it big in Tamil his songs dominate most of the top 10 songs.
But Harris is a good change to move away from Deva kind of stuff

"But Harris is a good change to move away from Deva kind of stuff" - Different opinion here UV. HJ is no different from Deva. Both of them are without any idioms/style of their own. Deva is ethnic while HJ is foreign in style ..that is all. But as usual, we people who think anybody who speaks in English is smarter than somebody who communicates in tamil will think HJ is better (again just my opinion UV not disrespecting your opinions).

BTW, HJ goes into my ignore list and vow never to buy any albums with Sukhwinder Singh ..ever :(
