BB / Saravanan,
Thanks for a nice song. I have never heard that song. I can't believe that it was composed by Gangai Amaran.
Gangai Amaran is a family friend of my cousin, and he used to visit her house frequently (in US). I happened to see him (in video) singing with his acoustic guitar in one of his visits. He had a good singing voice (much better than Ilayaraja) and he had a nice style of strumming the guitar too. I knew that he had worked as Music director for some films, but somehow none of his songs had stayed in my memory. But this one sounds really good to create a deeper impression. Thanks again.
By the bye, did you observe Jesudas slipping frequently in his pronunciation of 'La' in 'iLam' ? He makes it 'ilam' :) I think he never got over the difference between the three 'la' sounds of Tamil :)

I couldn't help thinking about my favourite "childless" song: "azhagu nilavE" from Pavithra. Very nice composition by ARR, remarkable in its calculated yet subtle oscillation between a yearning feeling, a feeling of contentment brought on by compromise, and a feeling of wonder. One of ARR's strengths is being able to take you through a gamut of emotions with just his melody lines. Vairamuthu's excellent choice of words gives more content to the emotions, but it's KSC's voice that walks away with it all, giving you the feeling of emptiness in the pit of your stomach and the feeling of being redeemed by an appropriate alternative. She either had a cold during the voice recording or she cried. It may have even been spontaneous crying because of the topic; she herself was childless for quite a few years. I remember in a recent interview she said that singing lullabies in recordings always made her very emotional because she never had the fortune to sing one for her own. She was recently blessed with a daughter, I believe, and was very happy that she could now experience the maternal feelings that she only sang about so far.) This song moves me every time I hear it, even after so many years.

bb: Great selection! I have not heard this song in a long time. Somebody else has also sung 'Arutjothi deivam'. 'Kallaarkum katravarkum' was the song we sang in elementary school. The most famous Tiruvarutpa is probably 'aadiya paadham manraadiya paadham' by MKT. Thanks.

Arutjyothi tharum -
what a classic saranga!Just when Bombay sisters finished their "Sithadiye Sithadiye" I started listening to this and enjoyed.the first one was a lullaby for a crying child but this one a lullaby to put out the evil thoughts to eternal sleep.Ghantasala with faultless pronounciation and distinctly different from his pet Asareeri voice.
The other saranga piece like "Narayana ennum thirunamam" in the song Thirual perumai and the song "Konja neram ennai" are my favourites to understand the structure of this superb raga.
BB I really doubt that this song is from ArutPerum jyothi and this song certainly belongs to 1950s or at best early 60s.
Vadiya payirai kandapothellam vadiya uLLam -such a great soul.

"iam not able to hear anything"
hmmm.. what could be the problem? ;-)
this reminds me of a sequence in Hitchhiker's guide.. The hero falls from a building(?) and sustains injuries. He touches his feet, it hurts. He touches his head, it hurts. He touches all over his body and it pains terribly. Finally, he realizes that it is only his hand (which was doing the touching part) that is actually hurt & paining :-)

Song of the Day: karisakkaattuk kuyilE from eera nilam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/karisakkaattu.rm
- There are some songs that are not noticed because they are done by obscure music directors. If these songs were labelled as from IR or ARR, more people will sit up and take notice. This is one such song. I myself discovered this song only this week, long after it came and vanished without a trace.
- Eera Nilam is Bharathiraja's latest film. This was released around August this year, and sank without causing a ripple. The film faced problems before its release and was rejected soon after. Audiences were not willing to look at Manoj as a hero, and Suhasini's turn as a rustic village lady couldn't save the film.
- The music for this movie was done by Sirpi. This particular song is a catchy number, sung by Sujatha and Sirpi himself. Sujatha is enchanting as usual, and Sirpi is not bad as a singer. This song could have easily been from ARR in karuththammaa or kizhakku cheemaiyilE (aathangkarai maramE, anyone?).

bb,
Good choice from Eera Nilam. Couple other songs were decent too. I remember several lyricists were also used for this soundtrack. Can you give the lyricist for this song? The stigmatized Sirpi has a rustic voice that falls close to Chandrabose's when he sang "yaeNdi muththammaa". It's sad to see the rich history of karisal kaadu become a political pigeon and a TFM cliche.

bb,
it may have been missed by people who are brand conscious, but not by the unbiased.
'mEgangarukkuthu...' is also a good one.

In his introduction, Bharathiraja mentions Kabilan and Thenmozhi (probably a couple more) as lyricists. I couldn't find who wrote this particular song, though.

Yeh..Sembaruthi is nice as well( except for the annoying Anuradha Sriram ). Songs went unnoticed as the movie bombed at the box office. I would tell this is the best album by stipi next to 'Gohulam' ( which had songs like Sevanthi Poo eduthaen by Susheela & Unnimenon )

Sirpi, like most other MDs, seems to have reinvented himself over the last few years. I wonder if it has something to do with the assistants he has! (I have heard that his assistants used to run quite a bit of the show.) One can tell that he has gone hi-tech like most other MDs now. This movie has songs that are a good combination of IR and ARR styles. His arrangement is heavily inspired by ARR's style, especially that of the mid-90s. I like the SOTD best out of all the songs. Some of the songs in this movie, in portions, remind me of other songs by other MDs.
Portions of Sembaruthi (especially the "postlude") remind me of "chandhiranaith thottadhu yaar" (second interlude 4:40 onwards) from Ratchagan. Naveen's similar freestyling on the flute may be the common denominator here.
SOTD reminds me of IR's classic "soaLam vedhakkaiyiley"/"amman koil kezhakkaale", in the ambience and mood it creates. Other resemblances exist too, that I am not able to think of, off the top of my head.
I saw very strong vintage mid 80-s IR-isms in the movie that had the song "anaarkkali adiye anaarkkali" (sung by Unnikrishnan - can't remember if it was a duet; can't remeber the movie name either. There was another song in this movie too that was reasonably listenable, given Sirpy's standards, that is!) Anybody knows more details?

Song of the Day: ponnil vaanam pOttadhuk kOlangaLE from villup paattukkaaran.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/ponnilvaanam.rm
- Sung by S.Janaki, music by IR.
- This semi-classical song is the highlight of this forgettable movie. This film was a rehash of Karagaattakkaaran, with Ramarajan as the villup paattukkaaran. 'O pOdu' raNi made her debut as the heroine of this movie, if I remember correctly. Other songs in this movie include "kalaivaaNiyO raaNiyO", "sOlai malaiyOram" and "thandhEn thandhEn isai" - a song with lyrics set such that the lips never meet.
- In the ROS thread, people discussing this song seem to think this is in Karnataga Khamas or Naattaikkurinji based.
- A while back, I compiled a list of threads on S.Janaki, here: http://www.newtfmpage.com/my/singer/sjanaki.html
